EnvironmentIndus Motor Company has always been in the forefront of activities that preserve and improve our environment. We aim for growth that is in harmony with the environment throughout all areas of our business activities. We strive to use and promote technologies and practices that enable the environment and economy to coexist harmoniously.

The company's commitment towards the environment is manifested both in our stated policies and actions. The team at Indus is committed to continuously improve the company's environment management system to identify and avoid those activities that have a negative

Page 6: Indus Motor Company

environmental impact, comply with all applicable legal, regulatory and other requirements, and assist Society by making the environment friendlier. IMC is ISO 14001:2004 certified.

Natural Resource PreservationNatural resources broadly cover plant and animal species found on that particular job site. No damage has ever been brought to surface as regards to animal colonies or bio diversity.

Emissions ControlEmissions include paint and associated chemical fumes, byproducts generated by the burning of fuel, volatile thinner emissions, ozone depleting refrigerants etc. Such emissions have been reduced by continuous monitoring, maintaining standard consumption of paints/chemicals, commissioning of thinner recycling machine, burning of waste in incinerators and switching to environment friendly refrigerants.

As regards to vehicular emissions, more refined fuel options have been included for a segment of production line up.

Noise ControlExcessive noise generating equipment is avoided whenever possible. When inevitable, ear protection is provided to exposed team members

Underground Facility ManagementWhenever hazardous materials are stored underground, there arises concern about possible seepage to the soil underneath. This requires special design to combat such phenomenon. At IMC the use of secondary containment is practiced.

Selection of Engineering MaterialsSome materials required during manufacturing of vehicles have an impact on the environment. These materials are being replaced gradually by their environment friendly counterparts

Ozone Friendly RefrigerantsIt has long been established that refrigerants used in the air conditioning, that are based on a family of chloro-floro carbons or hydro chloro floro carbons, which are detrimental to the ozone layer, a natural protection against sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. In the absence of stringent regulations, these materials are still in use. After considerable research IMC and TMC voluntarily switched over to R134a family of refrigerants, which has no negative impact on the environment.

CNG Powered VehiclesMost automobiles manufacturers around the globe have experimented with the quality of fuel to reduce the magnitude of harmful emissions, without compromising on performance characteristics. Premium grade fuels are known to have reached saturation in terms of further refinement. Alternate fuel search has resulted in numerous options such as hybrid synergy drives and compressed natural gas powered vehicles. IMC is among one of the first OEM's who introduced CNG powered vehicles in Pakistan

Process Fuels

Page 7: Indus Motor Company

Many production processes and allied equipment require burning of fuels resulting in emissions which are harmful to the environment. The trend in the early 90's was to use light diesel oil or furnace oil as process fuels which resulted in heavy emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides. Due to the negative impact on environment, these fuels are fast losing favor. IMC was amongst the initial companies who successfully transformed burning of such fuels to more environment friendly natural gas

Cogeneration PlantThe company has installed the environment friendly Co-generation Power Plant which will help in reduction of carbon dioxide emissions through the use of natural gas to operate engines and turbines.

Wastewater Treatment PlantA Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) has been installed to treat hazardous paint wastewater. The WWTP fulfills the NEQS requirements and critical parameters are well within the EPA permissible limits of the NEQS following treatment. The treated water is used for plantation purpose

Thinner Recycling MachineA thinner recycling machine has been installed to recycle the waste thinner in the manufacturing process. This machine recycles the thinner used for cleaning painting guns and hose pipe connections. This investment has currently reduced the VOC concentration in the air as well as save the cost of thinner usage in process.

VOC Reduction ProgramVolatile Organic Compounds are dangerous hydrocarbons released by burning of fuels or through paint operations.

Such compounds have a two fold impact on environment; at ground level and at the stratosphere. At ground level they are precarious as they cause respiratory tract infections in humans. Also if there is any incidental emissions of NOx in the vicinity, VOC react with them to form a chemical addition product known as “Smog”.

This smog seriously disturbs natural ecological balance as it causes ‘temperature inversion”. During the natural cycle, warm air rises up after absorbing heat at ground level. Cooler air from the above replaces this warm air as natural a convection current. This way heat is continuously dissipated to the atmosphere which is a large sink

SoC Reduction StrategyIMC and its vendors have undertaken to gradually eliminate four hazardous substances from their manufacturing that are detrimental to the environment i.e. mercury, cadmium, chromium and Lead.

Plantation of Thousands of Trees at Plant SiteIndus Motor Company's environmental interests are clearly visible at its Port Qasim Plant. 64,000 sq.m (50% of factory) of garden zone has been developed and more than 6,000 trees have been planted.

Specialized Trainings

Page 8: Indus Motor Company

In a world of fast developments and competitive environments, achieving a certain level of performance and maintaining it successfully is not sufficient. Knowledge and skill must be continuously enhanced to keep up to speed with progress as today's motivations will be mandatory regulations tomorrow. IMC, being a joint venture with a leading Fortune 500 Company, is at the hub of knowledge and experience sharing with its sister concerns spread over six continents. There is frequent exchange of correspondence on facility and process improvement to bring them at par with Toyota 's internal environment standards/local regulations. Toyota has full fledged purpose built training facilities where delegates of all offspring plants are invited for level up trainings in environment management system. IMC is in liaison with technical collaboration bodies in Japan and Pakistan (e.g. JETRO), and at such platforms takes part and contributes in the environment improvement activities. On the job training is another effective tool to meet desired objectives. There are periodic visits by external sources mainly by expatriate experts to deliver necessary instructions on vulnerable facilities.

5 “S” and 5 “R” ConceptsIMC, being a joint venture with Toyota Motor Corporation Japan owes much in terms of organizational structure and methodologies. We at Indus coined the terms 5 “S' and 5 “R” inspired by TMC experience that guarantees not only quality but serves as a catalyst to the environment management program. v     Sort - Remove all items from the workplace that are NOT needed for current production. v     Set in Order - Arrange needed items so that they are easy to find and put away. Items used often are placed closer to employee.v     Shine - Making sure everything is clean, functioning, and ready to go.v     Standardize - The method you use to maintain the first 3S's.v     Sustain - Making a habit of properly maintaining correct procedures

Budgetary SupportsNo meaningful result can be achieved without adequate allocation of necessary resources. Financial resource is the most important feature. IMC has always allocated very generous funds to meet the environmental objectives.

There is indirect funding for environmental improvement such as the use of electrostatic hand guns whose primary aim is to improve quality, but are also environment friendly.

Contractor's ManagementIMC has clearly communicated its safety, health and environment requirements to the concerned stakeholders including the contractors. .

Preservation of Naran & Lake Saiful MulukUp in the mountains, Indus Motor Company undertook a new environmental initiative. Tourism has taken its toll, threatening to destroy our natural beauty. A new clean-up campaign brought an environmental army into the region with the aim of cleaning up the garbage and mess, and to inspire the local people and businesses into keeping the area both beautiful and clean. 50 cleaners worked for 7 days to gather the waste while it rained and snowed.

Page 9: Indus Motor Company

Total wet and dry waste collected from Naran and Lake Saiful Maluk was over 42,000 kg (over 42 tons). Waste was dumped at the official waste disposal area 100 KM from Lake Saiful Maluk

IMC-SZABIST No Litter CampaignIndus Motor Company (IMC) partnered with the students of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) to highlight the need for a cleaner Karachi. Through training and regular practice under simulated conditions, this plan enabled us to respond effectively to emergencies.

Dedicated Slogan for Six MonthsTo create SHE awareness, company will create “SHE statements” with every departments input, which will be displayed on different points in Company.

National Environmental Awards Indus Motor Company (IMC) has received the prestigious Environment Excellence Award for last 4 year (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008). This event is organized by the National Forum for Environment & Health (NFEH). This award is the first one of its kind. The objective is to acknowledge the contribution of corporate sector in the field of environment protection and to enhance a healthy spirit of competition amongst the industrial sector for protecting the environment.

Page 10: Indus Motor Company

IMC successfully met the criteria setout for the award which included emissions, effluents and solid waste management; noise and toxicity control; company's certification; frequency and intensity of community services; thinner recycling process and above all, the company's environment friendly policies, objectives, programs and events.

Road SafetyWe have redefined our CSR strategy and selected projects that have a strong business connect such as Road Safety and we are at the forefront of several Road Safety initiatives, aimed at increasing road safety across the country. The main purpose of our Road Safety initiatives is to create awareness in society and help Pakistani citizens create a culture of safer road environment for all users resulting in minimizing traffic accidents and traffic congestions. Our “Road Safety Project” model is based on reaching and working with key stakeholders so that we can leverage combined strengths and ensure program sustainability.

There is an urgent need to educate people, especially your children, about Road Safety and the ethics of driving. Children can also influence their elders to follow good driving habits. The same children would be driving vehicles tomorrow!

Injury Control and Traffic Safety Course (July 17~21, 2006)The concept of “Road Safety” is relatively new to Pakistan . There is lack of credible data on road traffic injuries. As a first step to create awareness about Injury Control and Traffic Safety, IMC conducted the “ Injury Control & Traffic Safety Course”. This five-day course started on July 17, 2006 in collaboration with NED University of Engineering and Technology, Aga Khan University and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center . Two renowned experts in Road Safety, Prof. Dr. Geetam Tiwari and Prof. Dr . Dinesh Mohan of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi , conducted this intensive course. There was participation from the concerned stakeholders, including: traffic engineering experts, doctors attending to road traffic accidents at hospitals' emergency wards, representatives from auto industry, fuel companies, private sector companies, educational institutions, transport companies, police, city government, provincial and other government departments, etc.

Emphasis was laid on measures to avoid road traffic accidents. Injury Control measures were also discussed in detail during the course. Presentations were followed by Q&A sessions and discussions to enhance the understanding of participants and stakeholders regarding Injury Control and Road Safety. The course was a success as it was able to highlight the key issues involved in Injury Control and Traffic Safety

Page 11: Indus Motor Company

Road Traffic Injury Research ProjectThe Injury Control & Traffic Safety Course helped us in designing the ensuing “Road Traffic Injury Research Project (RTIRP)”, which was undertaken in partnership with Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), NED University of Engineering & Technology (NED) and Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). Road Traffic Injury Research Project (RTIP) was initiated to evaluate the nature, location, magnitude and major causes of traffic fatalities in Karachi . Five major hospitals were selected for data collection in Karachi , the largest city in Pakistan . Emergency hospital staff and researchers collected data 24x7, round the clock and immediately, the ground truth of very high road accidents became apparent. There have been nearly 70,000 injuries and fatalities recorded in the 24 months period since the start of the project. The results are also shared quarterly with the steering committee comprising of senior provincial government officials which is presided by the Governor Sindh. These reviews have led to countermeasures being taken at several vulnerable accident spots resulting in a positive downward trend of accidents at these locations

Toyota Road Safety Campaign and Concerts at SchoolsSince Road Traffic Injury Research data shows that a high number of Road Traffic accidents involve children, we launched the Toyota Road Safety Campaign at Schools with WWF and Family Educational Services Foundation (FESF) as our partners.

The Toyota Road Safety Campaign and Concerts at Schools included distribution of Brochures, presentations on Road Safety and Traffic Signs, Quizzes, signing of Oath Forms by the children's parents, skits by clowns and a Concert.

Toyota Road Safety Concerts were conducted at Schools to make learning an enjoyable experience. Skits were presented by clowns to emphasize Road Safety by showing practical ways to obey traffic rules. Around 100 schools and well over 20,000 children participated in this campaign. The campaign was highly appreciated by the school staff, children and their parents

1st National Road Safety ConferenceIn order to create awareness of Road Safety on a national level and to coordinate the efforts of different stakeholders, Indus hosted the 1 st National Road Safety Conference. The Conference was part of the UN Global Road Safety Week (23-29 th April 07) and included experts from the five main stakeholders concerned with Road Safety: Corporate, Education, Health, Traffic Engineering and Law Enforcement. Over 500 participants were present, 101 recommendations were developed, and over two dozen Road Safety projects have been prioritized. A Road Safety Stakeholders group has been formed that will review the projects quarterly.

The conference was a huge success. Government departments and regulatory bodies are expected to use the conference recommendations in formulating policies and legislation. Road Safety is to become part of the school curriculum. The conference also acted as a catalyst for many companies, health and educational institutions and NGOs who are now involved in Road Safety initiatives in partnership or on their own.
