Mobile Phones

At the beginning of 2020 the Victorian State Government brought in a new mobile phone policy for students at all government schools.

This policy requires all students to turn off their mobile phones and have them stored in a secure place provided by the school.

We have, in the office for this purpose, a secure locked mobile phone cabinet (as pictured).

Please remind your child (if they do carry a mobile phone with them to school) that they must hand it in to the office each morning and that they are not to have it in the classroom.

Office Doors

The Office doors are only to be used for office/administration business.

There is no access to the school yard or exiting of the school yard via the Administration Building.

Visitors

Anyone remaining onsite for more than 15 minutes, must sign in as a visitor at the office. This is not just an emergency management requirement, but also a Covid Safety requirement.

Returning to COVID Normal

This week we received the good news that Victoria is well-placed for a further easing of restrictions and a return to “COVID Normal”. As a school, we are looking forward to the opportunity to further reconnecting and re-engaging with our community through our events program in term two. I will be in touch early during term 2 to advise parents of the events we have planned to further welcome you to our school and help you connect with the broader culture of Kilmore Primary School.

Classroom Helpers Program

In term two we will be introducing our classroom helpers program. Parents are invaluable partners in their child’s education and the classroom helper program provides an enormous amount of assistance in supporting students’ education at KPS. As part of our classroom helper program, we will provide all parents and guardians who wish to participate with an induction and education process. I will be in touch early in term 2 to advise parents of the expression of interest process to participate in our classroom helper program.

Family and Friends

Today our Family and Friends group held their Annual General Meeting. Our Family and Friends group has played an enormous role in supporting our school and its educational programs over the last number of years. Locally raised funds play a crucial role in providing that “little bit extra” for our students and I would like to acknowledge the tireless work of our Family and Friends group. In 2021, we hope to return to our usual calendar and fundraising events, please keep an eye on a newsletter and Facebook page to track ways in which you can become involved in assisting the fundraising efforts of our school.

End of Term Activities

As we head into the last week of term we have a number of exciting events for students to celebrate the end of term. Next week we will be holding our Bee Ticket Bonanza which allows students to redeem all of the Bee Tickets they have collected for positive behaviours while at school. We will also be holding a Staff versus Student sporting event and our teachers are heavily in training and looking forward to the contest! Finally, on the last day of term we will be holding an Out of Uniform day to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. We look forward to an exciting last week at school.

Teacher Professional Learning

Kilmore Primary School continues to provide some excellent professional learning sessions for our staff. This week our teachers had the opportunity to work with Anne Korab who is a nationally acknowledged literacy expert. Anne has been working with our school throughout 2020 and 2021 and has developed a special relationship and “soft spot” for KPS, in fact she is hoping to use some of her experiences at KPS in a forthcoming book on the teaching of writing to students. This week our teachers had a fabulous session with Ann, focusing on how to develop students writing skills through debate and dialogue. Ann is one of the many high-level educators who work with our teachers and we look forward to continuing our relationship with her across the year. All the best, Neil O’Sullivan Principal

Next Thursday the 1st April (last day of term) will be an Out of Uniform Day.

In recognition of the amazing work that the Royal Children’s Hospital do for many of our students in various ways, we are asking students to bring a gold coin donation to go towards the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

This week and next week teams will be planning for Term 2. Teams will plan for Reading, Writing, Spelling,

Handwriting, and Speaking and Listening. The writing foci for next term are:

Foundation: recount/personal narrative and poetry

Year 1: Recount, persuasive and poetry

Year 2 – 6: persuasive and poetry

At the end of next term we will also have a Writer’s Festival where students will be able to develop a piece (or

pieces of writing) in any genre they choose.

On Monday 22nd Ann Korab, our writing consultant, ran a professional learning session for all the staff on ‘dialogic

argumentation’. “Dialogic Teaching aims to improve pupil engagement and attainment by improving the quality

of classroom talk. Teachers are trained in strategies that enable pupils to reason, discuss, argue and explain rather

than merely respond, in order to develop higher order thinking and articulacy.” https://

educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/projects-and-evaluation/projects/dialogic-teaching/

Ann taught us that the fastest way to teach argument is through talk. In fact, students learn this 10 times faster

through talk rather than through writing. She also taught us about: respectful and ethical talk, debate protocols,

and how to support student learning with the use of ‘conversation stems’. All the staff participated in a debate

about the book, ‘The Giving Tree’. I debated against Mrs Rebbechi. She had some very good arguments and

presented them in a very respectful way.

This session will support our persuasive writing units across the school next term.

On Monday Ann also ran persuasive writing professional learning for our Year 4 and 6 teams. Next week Ann will run

another session on Naplan persuasive writing for our Year 3 and 5 teams. She will also conduct a session for our

Foundation team about recount /personal narrative writing. We are very excited to continue our work with Ann this

year.

We have purchased some new take home readers for our Foundation students. Here are some of the books we

have bought. They include some handy prompts for parents and carers too.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS

FUND (CSEF)

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are a part of a healthy curriculum.

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student is:

$125 for primary school students

$225 for secondary school students

HOW TO APPLY

New applicants should contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from the website below.

If you applied for CSEF at your child's school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.

You only need to complete an application form if any of the following changes have occurred:

new student enrolments; your child has started or changed schools this year.

Changed family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, concession card number, or new siblings commencing this year.
