TWIN PEAKS was my Morrissey, it was my Oasis. As a latent teen in the south of England who thought acid house was a new kind of ab-attoir, e Stone Roses and their like passed me by. I was growing up fast and needed a bad in uence to encourage me to be moody and take hallucinogenic drugs. When it came, it permeated me like no other. Manchester had Bez, but I had Bob.

is coming ursday, Vega will welcome many such devotees, intrigued to see what their Twin Peaks theme night (see G2 for de-tails) will consist of. Many will dress up, others won’t but claim they’ve come as Leo (especially if they’re sit-ting down), and some might even come in character, after slaying a teenage girl and dumping her body on the beach in a plastic sheet.

Whatever they do, they’ll do it with style and without reason. For at the essence of Twin Peaks was its postmodernism. e net is awash with graveyard Q & A sites, where every other answer is: “Nobody knows! Not even David Lynch!”

And even when there’s an an-swer, it’s incredulous. Like the popu-lation. On the sign it says 51,201, but apparently this was a late addi-tion by a network executive fearful that urban audiences would switch o during the opening credits. Its real population is 5,120 – a typo it was later claimed.

e theme evening would do well to consult the owner of e Log Lady café (see G9 for details) in the city centre. Her homage to the series aims to capture its atmos-phere, not give every visitor a visual journey through all 30 episodes. It’s tastefully done and the ideal place to start my own little homage.

I’ll probably need to wrap up warm, though. With 6cm of snow expected on Saturday, and minus temperatures all next week, we could be in for a white December, let alone Christmas. And this issue is again accordingly festive with a guide to the best places to buy deco-rations (see G9), three Christmas pub quizzes (G8-9), numerous mar-kets (G8), a heads-up on this year’s panto (G8) and a recipe for festive turkey that doesn’t involve you hav-ing to roast the thing for ve hours.

e cast of Twin Peaks sang a version of ‘ e 12 Days of Christ-mas’ once. Bob sings the “three possessed souls” verse. Don’t ask me why: “Nobody knows! Not even David Lynch!”.

A marriage so strong, it will last for an eternity

Given its political undertones, the lady of the house is pretty much looking up at the guillotine

e Marriage of FigaroGamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv 9, Cph K; Tue & Wed 19:30; tickets 95-595kr; 180 mins including intermission; in Italian with Danish subs; www.kglteater.dk

FOR TWO DAYS in December, the Royal National eatre will host Mozart’s bitter-sweet comedic opera, e Marriage of Figaro (originally Le Nozzi de Figaro). is much-loved opera, performed by Den Jyske Opera, witnesses the rollercoaster emotions during the course of a chaotic, action-packed day of intrigue and misunderstandings. All shades of the emotional palette are embraced: from lust, transgression and jealousy, to commit-ment and forgiveness. ese desires and emotions spin dramatically out of control as the day of madness unfolds − all set to the magical music of Mozart.

On the surface, it may seem like an al-most slapstick comedy of errors, in which all the characters seem hell-bent on following their own self-serving instincts and desires. But the story of the opera − a political and psychological dramatisation of the aristo-cratic hierarchy set to a simply stunning orchestration that subtly personi es the in-dividual characters − is so much more than that.

Figaro has its origins in a play by Beau-marchais that was banned by the French monarchy and that only had its première in 1784 – by that time, the writing was on the wall for Louis XVI. Transforming the piece into an opera must have been quite the po-litical hot potato in the censorious atmos-phere of Joseph II’s Vienna, where the play had also been banned. e librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte wrote his script in poetic Italian and removed the obvious political refer-ences to get the censor’s approval. Although the rascally aristocrats do get their comeup-pance in Figaro, what was really fascinating for Mozart and Da Ponte is the sheer human drama that ensues from the twists, turns and entanglements on the unforgettable day of Figaro’s wedding.

e Danish National Opera’s produc-tion from 2006 provides everything that the discerning opera-goer would expect: exuber-ant costumes, an aesthetically e ervescent staging and high musical standards, both on and o stage. Set in the Seville of the late 18th century, the performance has costumes inspired by the vibrant colours and imagery of Spanish artist Goya. Robert Bøgelund Vinther’s staging (based on Jan Maagaard’s original) of this operatic masterpiece has more than lived up to its billing. Two strong teams of singers combine with conductor Per Otto Johansson, who expertly leads the

outstanding team of soloists supported by the Copenhagen Philharmonic.

From the comic fanfare of the opening overture to the dramatic explosive climax, the powerful score de nes the emotional and expressive universe that captivates the audi-ence. e emancipated atmosphere allows the personal turmoil of the main characters Figaro, Susanna, the Count and Countess to be re ected in the arias Mozart composed for them. Cherubino’s seemingly uncontrol-lable urges come to fruition in ‘Non so più cosa son’ and ‘Voi che sapete’, the Count’s furious rage is given full vent in ‘Hai giá vin-ta la causu’, and Figaro’s moving ‘Aprite un po’ quegli occhi’. Perhaps the most a ecting music is reserved for the women: the Coun-tess’s tragic and poignant ‘Porgi, amor’ or Su-sanna’s entrancing ‘Deh vieni’. However, it is Mozart’s ensemble music that assaults the senses, most famously in the nale of Act II in which the mounting tension is brilliantly interpreted with one of the longest uninter-rupted pieces of music ever composed by Mozart.

Over the years, opera has acquired an unfair reputation for being inaccessible − a secret world reserved for the privileged classes and cultural elite. But the register of emo-tions and themes is universal and the cocktail of song, music, costumes, dance and special e ects are instantly recognisable from Hol-lywood to Bollywood. For those yet to ex-perience opera rst hand, the Old Stage in Kongen’s Nytorv provides both an elegant setting and a typical Danish informality for such occasions, which means you can leave your gala dresses and dinner jackets at home. Mozart’s e Marriage of Figaro is a classic of its kind and is the perfect introduction to the enchanting world of opera.

e 2006 performances received rave re-views, and the 2012 reviews have been no less enthusiastic with standing ovations at all per-formances. Lean back in the sumptuous sur-roundings of the Gamle Scene and succumb to the overwhelming theatrical and musical experience that is e Marriage of Figaro.

PICTURE THIS: you’re perched on top of a bar stool in a gritty, dimly-lit diner. The waitresses, both clad in snappy teal uniforms, dole out coffee refills and scram-bled eggs from behind the counter. Cool jazz pulsates from above while a detective in a trench coat picks at a slice of cherry pie and mut-ters unintelligibly into a tape recorder.

Perhaps it feels like you’re sitting at the Double R in Twin Peaks, but in reality the spectacle playing out in front of you is merely a TV screen. And that Bobby Briggs looka-like over there? He’s actually a shop owner from Nørrebro. In reality, this scene is a long way from, and two decades on, the small-town audiences have come to love – you’re at Vega’s Twin Peaks Theme Evening.

Since Laura Palmer, the fictional teenager whose mur-der kick-started the series, first washed up on televi-sion screens in 1990, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks has gar-nered a fiercely devoted fan base (read: cult following)

Evening for the wild at heart and been hailed as one of the highest-rated series of all time. FBI Agent Dale Cooper is brought in to investigate the young girl’s demise and inadvertently untangles a further web of mystery, as it turns out that Laura’s death is not the only mystery in town – nearly all of the characters conceal darker secrets be-neath a campy exterior.

The eccentricity and in-trigue of Twin Peaks come to Copenhagen on Thursday night when Vega’s Ideal Bar pays homage to the cult clas-sic. The event is the latest in Vega’s ‘Din Koncert’ (‘Your Concert’) series, in which se-lected organisers are invited to run the show for one even-ing, selecting all the musical content, themes and visuals. Following an intro of selected scenes from the series to warm up both die-hard Cooper fans and newbies alike, Denmark’s own electropop singer Freja Loeb will take the stage as the musical headliner of the even-ing. Instead of performing original music, however, Loeb and her band will depart from their signature tunes for the night and reinterpret favour-ites like ‘World Spins’ and ‘Falling’ from the Twin Peaks universe.

W hen thinking about the Danish music scene, upbeat pop music by artists such as Alphabeat, Rasmus

Seebach and Medina might be the first thing that comes to your mind. But dig a little deeper (or ask your hipster friend for help) and you’ll find a world of un-derground bands and music that is just about as varied as a Danish pick’n’mix

candy bar. One of those bands is Billow, a hip-hop group from Copenhagen, who won the award for best Urban Mu-sician at the 2012 Danish Underground Music Awards.

The band is led by Bashir Billow who, when he’s not rapping in a steady east Coast flow, croons soulful melodies with a honeyed voice that’s reminiscent of D’Angelo back in the day. Support-ing him are a live band consisting of brothers Mathias and Jakob Miang, who play drums and guitar respectively, Mads Østergaard on keyboard and An-ders hellborn on bass. The final touch is given by the DJ, Sebastian Thielke, and the mesmerising Rezwan Farmi who

sings backing vocals. The band come from nørrebro and

the melting pot feeling of the area is definitely present in their music. They count The Roots, Lauren hill and Mos Def among their influences and, al-though they are big old school names, it would not be unjust to compare the band to them: the music is soulful hip-hop with an enticing rhythm that’s bound to get you moving.

The band may have only been ac-tive for a little over two years, but they have been slowly building up a steady following – they released a single earlier this year, ‘Mental Picture’, which once heard is impossible to get out of your

head. They’re planning on releasing an-other single with a video soon, but even though they are in the process of re-cording, fans might need to wait a little longer for a studio album. Until then, their presence on the Danish live mu-sic scene is welcome as there aren’t that many quality Danish hip-hop artists who choose to rap in english. Their de-cision to perform in english also allows for their deep and sometimes political lyrics to be understood by non-Danes, which is great, not only if you’re a band looking for international recognition, but also for those of us who live in Co-penhagen but find the idea of learning Danish challenging (to say the least).

Billow will be playing this Saturday at the trendy kB18 in the Meatpacking District. The concert at kødboderne promises to be a good one as Billow is first and foremost a live band. Front-man Bashir says they love to perform and interact with the audience and that, essentially, they’re all about having a party with fellow hip-hop enthusiasts. The best part? Rumour has it that some brand new tunes might make their de-but at the concert, and since the band doesn’t have any other big gigs lined up until January, this is a golden opportu-nity to go and catch one of the hottest urban acts in Copenhagen today.

LemâitreRust, Guldbergsgade 8, Cph N; Fri 23:00; 60krMaking their foray into the club scene only two years ago, the Norwegian beatsmiths Ketil Jan and Ulrik Denizou were an instant hit with their EP The Friendly Sound, a compilation of a handful of high adrenaline dance music tracks. The self-defined ‘discodudes’ enjoyed immediate hype and were sent on a whirlwind tour of Scandi-navia before international offers started flooding in, booking gigs all over Europe and the US. Nick WarrenCulture Box, Kro-nprinsessegade 54, Cph K; Fri 23:00; 70krThe Kødbyen district pretty much has the market sewn up for dance, techno and house DJs bar one institution: Cul-ture Box. Reviewlong enough to make that claim with authority.

Kristofferson’s daughter Kelly joined him on a few songs to sing harmony and hold, but never really play a banjo. She has a great voice and brought a sparkle to her dad’s eye, but her contribution was slight − their musicianship never rose above the holiday camp father/daugh-ter talent show level.

The mid-to-slow tempo of Kristofferson’s catalogue con-fused that part of the crowd bound and determined to clap along and turn every song into a Dubliner’s rave-up − the original pace of the tune be damned. To his credit, Kristofferson never al-lowed the audience to alter his staid delivery.

When he appeared on the scene in Nashville in the 1960s, Kristofferson scared the estab-lishment to death. His songs that unabashedly acknowledged that people had sex when they weren’t married, sometimes smoked dope and were often hungover

on Sunday morning caused one tradition-bound country star to sneer: “Great, now Nashville has its very own hippie.”

An icon now himself, the best of very few spoken moments were when, struggling with a cold, he looked out at the crowd and deadpanned: “Y’all paid a lot of money to watch an old fart blow his nose,” and at the end of the break-up ballad ‘Nobody Wins’, when he paused and said: “Well, somebody won … Obama won … so the whole world won.”

There is still some grit in the old hippie after all.

There is a scene in a horrid 1984 film called Songwriter in which Kristofferson’s character climbs dishevelled from the ho-tel bed, looks at the mirror with-out taking off his sleep mask and says: “You good looking son of a bitch, don’t you ever die.”

On one chilly Copenhagen evening, a room full of people shared that sentiment.

WATCHING 76-year-old Kris Kristofferson live is like seeing a liv-

ing, breathing bit of American history. Yeah, that’s a cliché, but sometimes the cliché is the shortest distance to the truth.

It’s all there. The hot, sexy beginning, filled with promise and invention. The middle years, clogged with excess and loss of purpose. And finally, the realisa-tion that the best days may be past, but the struggle continues to redefine, reinvent and perhaps become relevant once again.

Kristofferson arrived on stage at promptly 9pm. A Texas gentleman does not keep his guests waiting. Approaching his eighth decade, Kristofferson remains razor-thin, classically

handsome and radiates the kind of presence that only years and miles can bring.

Playing most of the night alone, Kristofferson’s plain-spoken voice and simple guitar and harmonica playing stripped every song to its essence – and these are sturdy songs. Count-less versions by tone-deaf bar bands have not dulled the sim-ple brilliance of ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’ or ‘Me and Bobby McGee’.

Make no mistake; Kristof-ferson is no virtuoso musician. Your uncle with six months of lessons under his belt is prob-ably a better guitarist, but no-one comes to a Kristofferson show expecting flash guitar so-los; it is the songs and the man that matter.

Kristofferson’s ageing voice actually serves his canon well. A song like ‘Lovin’ Her Was Easier Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again’ becomes even more powerful when sung by a man who sounds like he has lived

FlossLarsbjørnsstraede 10, Cph K; Sat 22:00; free admLocated smack in the centre of Copenhagen, Floss is a staple bar for all seasons. Spread over two floors, the graffiti-heavy walls give the basement a gritty Brooklyn-like edge, packed with those too lazy to make the bike trip over to Kødbyen but still looking for a night on the town. Students will be pleased to hear that happy hour runs from 22:00-23:00. But don’t expect anything too impressive, just a strong mojito served up for 30kr in grubby glassware.

martha WainwrightAmager Bio; 20:00; 275kr The sister of the flamboyant and multi-award winning sing-er-songwriter Rufus and the daughter of legendary American folk singer Loudon Wainwright, Martha made her foray into the pop world as a classical violin-ist. It wasn’t until the mid-‘00s that she released her self-titled debut album, which set off the comparisons between her style and that of indie-rock musician Joan as Police Woman. Beyond your run-of-the-mill pop fodder, Wainwright’s music is patently unique, even if a tad mundane to most.

Hymns From NinevehVor Frelsers Kirke, Sankt Annægade 29, Cph K; 20:00; 140krThe seven-bit all-Danish band of-fer delicately crafted folk-pop that has found a niche in the Danish alternative music scene. Perform-ing a handful of songs from their 2011 Christmas/winter album, Endurance in Christmas Time, they’ll be winding back the clock with a repeat concert of last year’s show at Vor Frelsers Kirke. While most bands try to grab attention with loud, in-your-face beats and clichéd lyrics, the Hymns instead sit quietly in the corner, tapping piano keys and playing violins, flutes and acoustic guitars. Stand a little closer and you may like what you hear.

One-Eyed muleLille Vega; 21:00; 130krThe Danish trio are firmly root-ed in the American folk tradi-tion, capturing the country’s historic soundscape with organs, sitars, banjos, and a handful of homemade instruments. With their fourth album, When To-morrow Comes, released earlier this year, they’ve stamped their authority, as Denmark’s primary Americana outfit, turning out dustbowl ballads reflecting the band’s deep understanding of folk history such as ‘Mild and Warm (To Mississippi John Hurt)’, ‘September Sigh’, and ‘When Tomorrow Comes’.

AlphabeatStore Vega; 20:00; 225krRegarded as one of Denmark’s quirkier pop bands, Alphabeat’s sugary pop-rock has gained suc-cess across the continent and topped the charts in Denmark and the Netherlands and even done well in UK. Best known for their summery hit ‘Fascina-tion,’ the Danes’ ‘80s-inspired hits have ruled the Danish ra-dio station P3’s A-list since the band’s formation in the mid-00s. Often featured on the cover of teen pop magazines in neon-coloured head-bands and high-tops, it goes without saying that Alphabeat’s probably one for the younger crowd.

The casualtiesLoppen; 21:00; 100krThe New York street-punk band is rooted in the so-called ‘golden era’ of punk alongside ground-breaking groups such as The Exploited and Charged GBH. Their fearsome stage presence – foot-high fluorescent mohawks and all – paired with their out-right anti-establishment lyrics has kept them touring since coming together in 1990. Their ninth record, Resistance, released earlier this year, earned a ‘thumbs up’ from punk music experts Sputnik.com. Sure to create a bit of a stir in Christiana, where Loppen is located, it’s advised to arrive early as the venue can only manage a few hundred people.

savage RoseKoncerthuset; 20:00; 295-370krFormed back in 1967, the psy-chedelic rock group led by husband and wife Thomas and Annisette Koppel are hailed as one of Denmark’s most influ-ential bands in rock history. Their eclectic brand of prog-rock, psychedelic and classical jazz elements, paired with Ani-sette’s Janis Joplin-tinged vocals saw the group become one of Scandinavia’s most celebrated acts. While the unfortunate de-parture of Thomas has left An-nisette alone on stage, fans unite in celebrating the band’s history for practically every one of An-nisette’s solo concerts.

Cafe or bar? The hours are somewhat in between

TUCKED away in an inconspicuous spot on Studiestræde, there’s a metaphorical slice of North American pie that many a TV a -cionado would love to taste. Standing out among many late-serving cafe-bars with a cool but cosy vibe, e Log Lady is primar-ily a love song to the prematurely cancelled, early-1990s TV show Twin Peaks.

Despite running for just two seasons (and one movie), the series transformed the face of television forever, paving the way for much of the darker and stranger programming we enjoy today. It’s hard to imagine there being a Lost, e Sopranos or even e Killing without Twin Peaks. For a moment, it seemed the entire world was asking: “Who killed Laura Palmer?” Like few shows before, Twin Peaks captured the heart and imaginations of a generation, in-cluding those of myself and the owner of the Log Lady Cafe, Henriette Hartmann.

“For me it all started when I used to spend every summer with my grandmother in Sweden,” she recalls. “I clearly remember our conversation about this exciting new American series called Twin Peaks. I’m sure

my gran had little idea about the content of the show. It turned out to be pretty scary and I was actually way too young to see it. My grandmother’s house was in some dark woods too, so the whole experience was a little overwhelming, but neither of us could stop watching. We were hooked. I still am. A Twin Peaks-themed bar seemed like the natural expression of that.”

To Hartmann’s credit, this relatively small bar is less like a fan-made mecca and more an extension of the show’s atmos-phere. It’s not crammed with memorabilia or signed photographs, rather it’s more the sort of location you might actually hap-pen across in David Lynch’s ctional town: a neon sign ickers in the window, most of the furniture is wooden and there’s the occasional piece of taxidermy. Certain wall coverings are Native American and there are actual logs placed here and there. One bla-tant reference to the series is a small walk-way that connects the main room and the small cosy to the toilets: its red-curtained walls and black & white zig-zag oor is directly inspired by an iconic dream-space called the Black Lodge that many viewers will be familiar with. is overall restraint re ects the good taste of Hartmann, earn-ing her kudos from fans without scaring away potential non-Peaks punters. It seems

that while many customers are fans, or at least aware of the references, there are some who are totally oblivious.

Beyond the various nods to Twin Peaks, e Log Lady doubles as a relax-ing co ee break (of the damn ne variety) during the afternoon and wine/spirits bar during the evening, hosting DJs and other small-scale performances. While the beer selection is small, the brands are interesting and well-chosen.

e nal allusion to the TV show is of course the name of the bar - e Log Lady is one of its most recognisable and beloved characters who, after losing her husband, nds solace in conversing with a mystical log which she cradles like a child, taking it everywhere. Hartmann explains her attraction to the character: “ e Log Lady would say things that seemed crazy at rst, but her log connected her to a greater understanding of things. She had a small role, but her presence was always felt, even when she was absent. She was pivotal to everything going on in the town.”

Likewise, for a growing number of Copenhageners, this bar is pivotal to their evenings out. If you’re going to the Twin Peaks-themed evening at Vega on urs-day, here’s your best start to the evening.

CAN YOU HAVE your cake and

eat it too? Conventional wisdom

says no, but with their rst budg-

et plan since the shift of power,

the new Socialdemokraterne-Radikale-

Socialistisk Folkeparti (SRSF) coalition

appear to be giving it a shot.

Many of the elements of the new

budget – which is expected to be re-

leased in its entirety on ursday – will

increase state spending at a time when

the budget de cit has increased. But

where the money would come from re-

mained a mystery.

A number of the new budget items

reinstate spending cuts made by the pre-

vious Venstre-Konservative (VK) govern-

ment. Here are a few of the major points:

Families: VK limited the state’s

monthly child support handouts (bør-

necheck) to 35,000 kroner per fam-

ily. at limit has now been abolished,

meaning that many families will get

larger child bene ts. e government

will also pay for fertility treatments and

voluntary sterilisations.

Welfare: VK and Dansk Folkeparti

(DF) introduced specialised welfare pro-

grammes that reduced the cash bene ts

for new immigrants. ose programmes

have now been eliminated and going

forward all residents in need of state

support will receive the same welfare

bene ts. Higher education and research:

Universities will get an extra one billion

kroner over two years to cover costs as-

sociated with a predicted increase in

the number of students. Moreover, stu-

dents will no longer pay administrative

fees, and prospective Master’s students

will have prerequisite course tuitions

paid. e government will also fund

1,500 more state-supported internship

positions.Infrastructure and job creation:

Some 17.5 billion kroner will be in-

vested over two years in infrastructure

projects, such as a new rail line between

Copenhagen and Ringsted, a project to

widen the Holbæk motorway, erosion

protection e orts along Jutland’s west

coast, and renovations to public hous-

ing. Prime minister Helle orning-

Schmidt has said that these ‘kickstart’

projects will create 20,000 new jobs

from 2012-2013. e Danish Construc-

tion Association predicts 10,000.

Tax break: e unpopular ‘mul-

timedia tax’ introduced by VK will be

abolished, saving some 525,000 Danes

with business laptops and mobile

phones 3,000 kroner per year.

Not everyone, however, can look for-

ward to a cash infusion. Smokers and junk

food lovers will be taxed higher on their

vices, while international corporations

will also see higher tax bills. SRSF plans

to raise revenue by closing a number of

tax loopholes going back nearly 20 years

that allowed international corporations

in Denmark to escape paying corporate

taxes (see more on page 15).

All told, the spending increases in the

new budget are not as big as the minister

of the economy and interior, Margrethe

Vestager (R), would like. She noted that

VK under-reported the de cit for 2012,

making it imprudent to spend more. But

Denmark will still meet the EU’s nan-

cial responsibility benchmarks, despite

the larger de cit, she added.

A new budget to ‘kickstart’ the economy

SRSF’s rst budget will spend 17.5 billion

kroner on infrastructure and abolish

previous taxes and restrictions

THE LONG-STANDING mo-nopoly of turkey at Christmas is slowly being dissolved back in Britain. Once a given for lunch on the 25th and then in bubble and squeak, pies, curries and casseroles for days after, the festive bird is being more and more overlooked these days in favour of more suc-culent, tasty duck or goose – even pork’s making a resurgence, and that’s saying something!

But like most foods with a bad reputation, the turkey has just suf-fered from either being cooked in the wrong way or not being used creatively enough. Why do we do such wonderfully versatile things with chicken, but only eat its plumper cousin once a year? e answer is probably its hard-wired

Turkey breast stu ed with chorizo and wrapped in bacon Serves 2

100g chorizo 1 small onionHandful of cherry toma-toes (5-6)Black pepper6 streaks of non-smoky ba-con

START BY preheating the oven to 200 °C.

Chop chorizo and tomatoes into small bits and finely dice the onion.

Fry chorizo and onion in pan (no need for oil because of the chorizo fat) and add tomatoes after a few minutes.

Take your turkey breasts and either place it in the middle of two small sheets of cling film, using a rolling pin flatten the breast out by gently hitting the meat. You want to stop when the

meat’s about half a centimetre thick.

Put half of your chorizo mix-ture on each flattened piece of turkey. If you think there might be too much, leave some aside and serve it with at the end.

Roll the breasts up around the filling and press the joins in with your fingers.

Roll the bacon around each steak. Leave the meat on the side where the rashers join while you heat oil in a pan.

And then add them to the pan in the same position (very important as it seals where the bacon overlaps), and fry the steaks in red hot oil for a few minutes on each side.

Transfer onto a baking tray and place it into the oven for 20 minutes, turning halfway through.

Serve it with vegetables, cranberry and bread sauce.

BY SIMON COOPERFOOD BLOG

association with Xmas, just like many still shudder at the thought of tapioca due to their school din-ner memories.

e truth is that turkey can in fact taste very nice indeed. It does roast nicely under the right con-ditions, but the simplest way to make it nicer is to make it smaller – or increase its surface area.

Below is a dish that could ei-ther take the place of a roast on Christmas Day, or be made with leftovers if you have enough for big slices. It would score highly at a pre-Christmas dinner party. Best of all though, this is for the other 364 ¼ days which, if the turkey were alive, would count because the animal would be for life and not just for Christmas.

TO CALL Nordic Noodle a restaurant is a stretch. Seating no more than 14 on a good day, this new addition to Nørrebro-gade is more hipster hole-in-the-wall than formal sit-down restaurant.

With a large logo that comprises a fork and a chopstick intersecting on a clock dial, one may be inclined to think that Nordic Noodle is advertising it of-fers a wide range of dining utensils. And whilst it does, its logo is actually saying much more about its concept.

Combining the inspiration of Asian wok fried food and Nordic Danish veg-etables like cabbage and carrots, Nordic Noodle is a fusion of these two distinct cultures. O ering quick, healthy, tasty and, above all, super a ordable food is this place’s draw card.

Paying tribute to its cultural back-bone, the interior is a melting pot of two cultures. From the outside it’s easy to miss due to its minimalist signage amongst the plethora that crowds Nørrebrogade.

Once inside, despite its signature Scandinavian approach to design (think stark minimalism), the raw boards and exposed brick décor provide a welcom-ing hip and rustic atmosphere. e tiny tables are exposed split-tree trunks, while the open kitchen will warm patrons even on the coldest of days, as they watch their meals being prepared over the open re.

ere are not many places where you can enjoy a healthy and fresh meal for the same cost as a pizza or kebab, but this is where Nordic Noodle is making its mark. Explaining the concept themselves, they said: “We want to give our customers a fast, healthy and individual dining experi-ence. Our three-step menu gives you the freedom of putting together an individu-alised meal to either enjoy it in the restau-rant or as a takeaway.”

e menu is so stupidly simple that one almost wonders why the concept hasn’t really caught on before. You begin by choosing your base, before adding op-tional ingredients, and end by picking a sauce − simple as that.

ere are three basics to choose from − rice noodles, egg noodles, or wholegrain rice − and all three come standard with fresh cabbages, carrots, bean sprouts, eggs, and topped with fresh herbs. Tasty enough to be enjoyed on their own (you’d need a sauce though), we felt like treating ourselves, and accordingly added some optional ingredients.

For protein, there is the option of chicken, beef or tiger prawns. For vegetar-ians or those just looking to try and get

in their daily ve, there is the choice of adding broccoli, mushrooms, onion, leek, fresh chilli, peanuts, organic potatoes, pineapple, mixed bell peppers, or bamboo shoots. And for the sauces, there are six op-tions: gluten free soya, teriyaki, sweet chili, hot chili, panang curry, or Nordic oyster.

During our visit we chose, or rather designed, three dishes. e rst was rice noodles, with tiger prawns, onion, bam-boo and mushrooms, and penang curry sauce. For our second dish we decided to combine egg noodles, chicken, broccoli, fresh chilli and a sweet chilli sauce. Decid-

ing on our third was di cult due to all the delicious smelling dishes others were eat-ing, but after much discussion the order was placed for wholegrain rice, with beef, broccoli, mushrooms, and teriyaki sauce.

After no more than a 15-minute wait, our amazing smelling dishes were in front of us. Quick cooking at high temperatures retains the natural colour, vitamins, and nutrients, while fresh Nordic ingredients and a little oil are key to serving a fast and healthy meal. As we tucked into our dish-es, all I could really think was: God damn, were they good.

Create your own: you will need to use your noodle!

Not usually a fan of taking the lord’s name in vain, there really is no other way to describe how tasty the food is. e noo-dles and meat melted in the mouth. e tiger prawns were a particular stand-out for their size and juicy texture. All in all, every mouthful was a true taste sensation.

With queues a common thing at Nordic Noodle, you may just be inclined to go for a pizza instead, but don’t! is place really is fantastic, as is the relation-ship between price and quality.

One more shaky-cam lm and it’s the end of cinema

I T WOULD seem writer/director David Ayer is a one-trick horse who solely specialises in depict-ing Los Angelenos who straddle

the line between law and criminality. Training Day (2001) and Street Kings (2008), which he scripted and direct-ed respectively, as well as many lms he has co-written – e Fast and the Furious, Dark Blue, S.W.A.T. – all fea-ture at least one member of LA’s nest who is either on the take or irting with the dark side, while the unstable lead of Ayer’s directorial debut Harsh Times (2005) can’t decide whether to join the LAPD, work for Homeland Security or become a drug dealer. It would seem that Ayer a ords his pro-tagonists the luxury of considering a dizzying array of options while he himself is sadly loath to.

So when, at the beginning of Ayer’s latest feature, o cer Brian Tay-lor (Gyllenhaal) is heard in voiceover declaring: “We stand together, a thin blue line, protecting the prey from the predators, the good from the bad,” viewers may be forgiven for ex-pecting these sanctimonious words to foreshadow a rather blurred morality, yet this is not the case. Ayer’s trade-mark raw authenticity has here been supplanted for a far more palatable commodity − the appearance of raw authenticity, a super cial sheen that lends itself well to gentle story arcs, appeasing familial bliss and a melo-dramatic climax. As Taylor and his partner Mike Zavala (Pena) patrol the streets of South Central, they adhere to a strict routine of good cop/great

cop, rescuing children from burning buildings, ghting crime and bleed-ing for the cause. Meanwhile, as though to underline the lm’s ethical certitudes, Ayer provides a counter-balance in the form of a Mexican street gang led by a man known only as Big Evil.

e lm’s racial politics are thank-fully a little more opaque than its morality, and much of the mock-ing brotherly banter between Taylor and Hispanic Zavala is dedicated to highlighting their ethnic and cultural di erences, while the crimes they in-vestigate trace a demographic shift

from black American to Mexican dominance. None of this is subtle – black gangster Mr Tre is in the mid-dle of complaining that local chicken shops have been overtaken by taco stands and that “it’s going to be ex-tinct niggers pretty soon,” when an expressly territory-marking drive-by shooting interrupts him, conducted by Big Evil’s gang as though in direct response to Mr Tre’s pronouncements. Ayer apparently felt the need to paint us a picture.

Still, a certain balance is main-tained, albeit contrived – if the del-eterious impact of Hispanic gangs and

Mexican drug cartels is highlighted, a more salutary image is suggested by scenes involving Zavala’s family cel-ebrations; and if Big Evil’s gang in-cludes a no-nonsense lesbian, then Taylor’s unit has one of those too (Ferrera). Accordingly, the lm o ers a dialectic between exclusion and inte-gration, order and underworld, which strives to be even-handed while being absurdly broad in its delineation.

Ayer’s decision to incorporate POV camerawork – compiling what we see from a ( ctive) selection of digicam footage shot by Taylor, Zavala and the crews of Mr Tre and Big Evil

– was no doubt intended to infuse End of Watch with a gritty, ground-level realism, but it is undermined by the jarring melding of this foot-age with other, entirely non-diegetic shots (often confusingly lmed in the same visceral handheld style). Viewers attempting to determine who’s lm-ing what at any given moment will quickly discover that the authentic-ity normally associated with this cin-ematic method yields a messier kind of postmodernism which in no way serves – let alone protects – an oth-erwise over-simpli ed story of good versus evil.

Dir: David Ayer; US action/thriller, 2012, 109 mins; Jake Gyllenhaal, Mi-chael Pena, Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez, America Ferrera

Gyllenhaal is very sensitive about his bracelet, apparently

AS ONE of the nest Brit-ish actors of his generation, Paddy Considine’s directo-

rial debut Tyrannosaur proves that he has the potential to be a mas-terful lmmaker as well.

Set in the drab pastures of Leeds, we rst meet our anti-hero Joseph (Mullan) after he is thrown out of a betting shop. Drunk, disorderly and in a t of

rage, he kicks his dog to death. It’s a devastating opening scene, illustrating not only how the now companionless widower is a tor-mented soul, but also just how dark and distressing the following ninety minutes of Tyrannosaur will be.

Running away from another crime scene, he stumbles into a charity shop only to be greeted by an a uent woman of God, Han-nah (Colman). Initially afraid, she consoles Joseph and, after a few heated exchanges, they strike up an unlikely kinship, shelter-ing them from their harsh living situations outside. For Joseph, it’s from his martyrdom and loneli-ness; and for Hannah, her turbu-lent marriage with an abusive and

degrading husband (Marsan).Famous for his many acting

roles in Shane Meadows’ lms (Dead Man’s Shoes, A Room For Romeo Brass), Considine expresses the same level of austerity in his own lmmaking. Rather than presenting a highly stylised por-trait of underclass Britain, he focuses on characterisation and performance, managing to reveal three of the best performances this reviewer has seen all year. Peter Mullan (Trainspotting, Warhorse) is both enchanting and sympa-thetic as the hapless Joseph, whilst Eddie Marsan (Happy Go Lucky, Sherlock Holmes) invokes terror whenever his gleaming eyes and insincere grin ll the screen. Best of all, Olivia Colman (the unsung

star of British comedy series Peep Show) is nally given the break-out role she deserves as Hannah. Fragile and sympathetic, she is the beacon of light amongst the darkness, leading to an inevitably devastating closing scene.

Tyrannosaur continues the so-cial realism trend set out by the politically conscious Ken Loach and the wryly-comical Mike Leigh. It’s a story of disconnected people looking for humanity. One of the best British kitchen sink dramas of recent years, it might be relentlessly miserable, but Ty-rannosaur suggests that Considine has a bright future ahead.

 e Act of Killing (15)

Dir: Joshua Oppenheimer; UK/ Indo doc, 2012, 115 minsWhen the Indonesian govern-ment was overthrown by the military in 1965, local gangster Anwar Congo and his friends were appointed death squad leaders, helping the army to kill an estimated one million ethnic Chinese alleged communists and intellectuals. is documen-tary’s masterstroke is revealing these monsters as human, and therefore recognisable. is is how it manages to touch us − and in doing so, the lm transcends its medium. MW Skyfall (11)

Dir: Sam Mendes; UK/US action/thriller, 2012, 143 mins; Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Bérénice MarloheForget the latter Brosnan follies, the much maligned Quantum of Solace and even fan-favorite Casino Royale because, for the rst time in nearly two decades, nobody is doing it better. MW

Searching for Sugar Man (15)

Dir: Malik Bendjelloul; Swe/ US/SA doc, 2012, 86 mins If you disappear into obscurity after an undistinguished music career, you can always take pride in the fact that halfway across the world a nation is being in-

spired by your music to start a revolution against a racist op-pressive regime. at’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish lmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to nd out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Avoid like the Plague

 e Possession (15)

Dir: Ole Bornedal; US horror, 2012, 92 mins; Na-tasha Calis, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick e only twist in an otherwise by-the-book exorcism plot is that instead of a Christian demon, this is a Jewish one. is forgettable ick does a decent job at maintain-ing a feeling of dread throughout, but that’s mostly because the audi-ence can’t wait for it to be over. ED

Ted (15)

Dir: Seth MacFarlane; US comedy, 2012, 106 mins; Mark Wahlberg, Mila Ku-nis, Seth MacFarlaneA tale of Peter Pan-esque pro-tracted male adolescence and ‘bro-versus-ho’ ethics, this is a lm that squarely relies on the comic poten-tial of random otsam and jetsam pop culture, tongue-in-cheek of-fensiveness and state-of-the-art foul-mouthed puppet humour. As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophis-tication or nesse, and is tfully amusing thanks only to the occa-

sional deadpan shock-value jokes o  ered by Mark Wahlberg’s crook-ed straight-man performance. AS

Taken 2 (15)

Dir: Olivier Megaton; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser e rst lm was a guilty pleas-ure that worked only for Nee-son’s fast-paced and high-octane action sequences, and in spite of a mind-numbingly dreadful per-formance from Maggie Grace. Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic ght scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL

 e Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11)

Dir: Bill Condon; US fan-tasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Michael Sheen e enormously lucrative fran-chise that is e Twilight Saga nally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four lms, Part 2’s soap-opera-esque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the lm’s biggest problems. But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduc-tion of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-o  s. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Hope Springs (11)

Dir: David Frankel; US rom-com, 2012, 100 mins; Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Mimi Rogers While the trailer makes this lm look like a syrupy sex romp, only a mournful tale of relationship turmoil lurks be-neath the slapstick jokes and sarcastic jibes of Hope Springs. Longtime couple Kay (Streep) and Arnold (Jones) embark on an intensive marriage counsel-ling class in a last-ditch e  ort to save their marriage. e lm raises faint hope and humour during the counselling session scenes, but the therapist Bernie Feld (Carell) unfortunately then sends the couple out on intima-cy exercises, shudder-worthy at-tempts at vulgar comedy. Short on laughs and drama alike, Hope Springs reduces Kay and Arnold’s reconciliation e  orts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR

Room 237 (15)

Dir: Rodney Ascher; US doc, 2012, 102 minsDocumentary lm-maker Rod-ney Ascher delves into one of the most-beloved horror lms of all-time, namely Stanley Ku-brick’s e Shining and, with the help of ve hard-core Shin-ing fans, explores some of the many symbolic interpretations surrounding the lm. Most of it is far-fetched and absurd, but all of it entertaining! LL

Argo (15)

Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Good-man, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor GarberWhile A eck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful lm, the script it-self is determined to show o  , with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly enter-taining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a lm about disguise, this lm masquerades as one belonging to the danger-ous fringes of political lmmak-ing, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like A eck himself, a little more ordinary that it really should be. MW

 e Imposter (15)

Dir: Bart Layton; UK doc, 2012, 94 mins; Frederic Bour-din, Carey Gibson, Beverly Dollarhide, Charlie ParkerDespite a promising premise for an intriguing documentary about a French man trying to convince a Texas family that he is their missing son, there is a level of over-stylisation that irks. We are drowned in gra-tuitous pseudo-tension and lmic technique, which ulti-mately serve only to detract from the genuine craft involved in documenting this com-plex and fascinating story. DS

Sinister (15)

Dir: Scott Derrickson; US horror, 2012, 110 mins; Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onoofrio, Michael Hall D’Addario, Juliet RylanceWhat Sinister lacks in innovation it makes up for in jump-inducing frights and gruesome imagery. is ick will de nitely please horror fans, but might not be the thing for the squeamish. LL

Moonrise Kingdom (7)

Dir: Wes Anderson; US comedy, 2012, 94 mins; Ed-ward Norton, Bill Mur-ray, Frances MacDormand, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jared Gilman, Katy Howard is newest feature lm from debonair lmmaker Anderson has a brilliant cast, a wry script and stunning cinematography. It’s fashionable entertainment, and will no doubt please Ander-son’s considerable fan-base. But under all the bells and whistles, is it just another coming-of-age, feel-good romcom – even a faint-ly insincere one at that? MW

FILM OF THE WEEK

sport OF THE WEEK

DRK, Wed 20:00 or Thu 18:55

YOU CAN picture K5 in negotia-tions for new series Missing (56 on Metacritic) and Perception (Sun 20:00, 52): “Okay, it’s a choice be-tween Breaking Bad and this tripe.” e former has 99 on Metacritic for its fth season, while the other two have bombed. “Fifth season! And no-one’s taken it – there must be something wrong with it.”

Missing sees a former CIA operative (yawn, men’s crotches beware, we can feel a drinking game coming on) looking for her abducted son (yawn, she failed the child surveillance module) in Europe (yawn, it’s mildly xeno-phobic). Like most US series, it’s over owing with Brits. Sean Bean’s at home in anything that involves missing children, while Gina Mc-Kee (Our Friends in the North) re-

ally has cornered the sardonic cow market. “ ink e French Con-nection meets Alias with a big help-ing of Taylor Lautner’s Abduction,” praised the New York Post. Taylor Lautner! Are you trying to praise it or raze it to the ground?

e NYP was less kind to Per-ception, observing that the “quirky-genius cop genre is getting a bit mouldy around the edges” in a plot that revolves around an eccentric neuroscientist played by a stubbly Eric McCormack (Will & Grace).

So thank god for Kidnapped - A Georgian Adventure, this week’s pick. e BBC doc recounts how Robert Louis Stevenson was in-spired to write his classic by the sto-ry of a 12-year-old sold into slavery in 1728 by a nasty uncle keen to get his hands on the boy’s inheritance.

And even nastier is the subject matter of Saving Face (DR2, Tue 21:30), an Oscar-winning doc that looks at the practice of throwing acid in women’s faces in Pakistan.

Elsewhere, two celebrity chefs will help you pile it on at Christ-mas: Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Christmas (TV3 Puls, Tue & Wed 20:00) will land you in Weight-Watchers while Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen (TV3 Puls, u 20:00) will see you celebrate New Year in a coronary care unit; there’s another chance to see Norwegian drama se-ries Lilyhammer (K5, Sun 21:55); while e Desert of Forbidden Art (DRK, Tue 16:00) chronicles one man’s mission to gather 44,000 works of banned Soviet art at an ob-scure museum in Uzbekistan.
