It’s Saturday afternoon and you are standing in a shop looking at the clothes. You only want one T-shirt, but two hours later,
you’ve got a T-shirt, a necklace and a pair of shoes.
Why? Shops look interesting, so people want to stay in them for a long time. The clothes are fashionable, the music is cool
and there are special lights to make things look better. The workers in the shop also “help” shoppers. They take the most
expensive necklace in the shop and say, “That looks great with the T-shirt!” So, what happens? You buy the necklace, of
course.
Going shopping can be very expensive. So next time you go shopping, remember to make a list and only buy the things on
your list.

Hi Paula, I’m sitting in front of my mirror and I don’t like what I see! My hairstyle is ugly and I hate my clothes. I need a new fashion style. Please look at the two photos in the attachment. In the first photo, there’s a blonde girl. I think she looks great! Of course, my hair is shorter and darker than hers, but I like her hairstyle. What do you think of the way she looks? In the second picture, the Japanese girl is wearing very colourful clothes and accessories: a pink sweater, a purple skirt, yellow and pink socks, a yellow hat and a light blue scarf. Do you think she looks pretty? I want to find the best style for me. You often read fashion magazines and you always wear amazing clothes. So please tell me: which fashion style is good for me? Read the text and complete the sentences below. Use one word in each space. Dolphins to the Rescue
In 2002, dolphins saved a fisherman, Grant Dickson, from a group of hungry sharks when Dickson’s
fishing boat sank in a storm off the coast of Australia. Thirty-six-year-old Dickson told the newspapers
about his terrible experience.
There were two other fishermen on the boat with Dickson but they died at sea. Dickson swam to a small
boat after his boat sank. The small boat was turned over, but Dickson held on to it. It wasn’t easy
because Dickson was hurt and bleeding badly. Suddenly, sharks came and swam around him. One
shark moved closer and closer to him. He was terribly frightened. Luckily, right then, some dolphins
appeared and swam around Dickson. Dickson understood the dolphins wanted to help him, and they did.
The dolphins chased away the sharks and saved Dickson’s life.
After almost two days of holding onto the small boat, a ship passed by and rescued Dickson.

POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
The world’s population is not spread out evenly – some areas have got a high density, other areas have got a low
density. You can calculate population density by dividing the number of people by the area. This shows
the average number of people living in a square kilometre. Areas that have got many
people per square kilometre are called densely populated areas. Places where few
people live are called sparsely populated areas. Sparsely populated areas are usually
difficult places to live in, for example, Antarctica.
There are a number of factors
affecting population density, such
as climate, terrain and natural
resources.
Climate
Places with a mild climate and enough rain are good for farming, so they attract a lot of people. Deserts and extremely cold places have got low population density.
Terrain
Flat areas are easy
to farm and are
densely populated.
Mountainous areas
are more difficult to
live in, so they are
sparsely populated.
Natural Resources
Places with a lot of wood, coal, oil, etc. usually have got higher
population density, while places without these resources have
got a lower population density.
In addition, countries with stable governments are usually more
densely populated than countries with unstable governments.
This is because people often leave areas with unstable
governments and migrate to safer areas.
1 Choose the correct word.
1. The world’s population is / isn’t distributed equally.
2. Densely populated areas haven’t got / havegot manypeople per square
kilometre.
3. Cities / Mountain areas are sparsely populated.
4. Places with / without natural resources have got a higher population.
5. Politics do / don’t affect population density.

THE BLACK DEATH
The Black Death was the name people gave to the Bubonic plague. The plague struck Europe between 1347 and 1351. It began in Genoa, Italy, and spread to the Mediterranean, the rest of Europe and Britain. The plague came from fleas living on rats. The fleas bit people and gave them the disease. People called the disease the Black Death because the victim’s fingers, toes and nose turned black. People with the disease also got black spots on the back of their neck, under their arms and in their groin. There was no cure for the disease, and most people died. No one was safe – the plague killed kings and religious leaders, as well as peasants. Historians believe about 25 million Europeans died from the plague – about one third of the world’s total population!
Because of the Black Death, there were fewer wars and less trade. Agriculture suffered because there was no one to work in the fields. There wasn’t
enough food in the towns and cities and bread was very expensive. In England, the peasants working on the land and taking care of the farm animals demanded more money for their work. This led to major changes in the structure of English society.
