From the Principal Let me begin with a hearty welcome back to all returning students, with a special welcome for commencing students at SPW. I am looking forward to seeing the term unfold and the weather warming up. During the recent three week holiday period there has been much further activity onsite, with particular emphasis on the development of a Design and Technology Laboratory in what was the third Art room. In addition there has been some work done to upgrade the two current Art rooms and the storage and office areas within. On the staffing front, there have been a number of changes which I will summarise below:

Mrs Bek Jarrett has commenced in RLS (Lisa Statham having first baby) Ms Silvana Gerges has commenced in 3SF (Shelda Foulis has retired) Ms Amelia Talbot has assumed responsibility for Art during Term 3 (Liezel Till,

Long Service Leave, Term 3) Ms Emiko Allum will be replacing Skye Baldacchino as our Japanese teacher

from the commencement of Week 8, whilst Ms Alice Blieschke will teach Year 6DK on Wednesdays in the place of Skye Baldacchino (maternity leave for Skye)

Mrs Eleanor Blight will be replaced from Week 6 by Mrs Georgia Ktanis (maternity leave for Eleanor)

Ms Heidi Kerr has replaced Mrs Meredith Williams during Semester 2 in The Pines (Meredith on leave from Week 6)

Mrs Paula Hanna and Miss Hannah Carroll have commenced in the Preparatory class (new class commencing Semester 2).

Shortly you may be surprised, but hopefully delighted, to see Mrs Karen Whelan accompanied by a Guide Dog puppy that is in training. Karen has registered with the relevant Association and offered to bring the puppy to school as part of a trial to see whether having a dog onsite would value-add to the experience children get at SPW. There will be some guidelines that will be put in place to ensure the safety of children, adults and pets, along with appropriate training, whilst the opportunity will also be provided for children who are anxious, or indeed allergic, to be accommodated. Whilst the dog will always be on a lead and guidelines put in place, I do understand that there may be some persons who wish to raise particular concerns in relation to this trial. If you are one such person, please feel free to email me or indeed pop in and see me.

Camps & Camp Information Sessions Camps & Camp Information Sessions All students in Years 3-7 received a letter regarding the exciting camps coming up in Week 8 this term. Parents/caregivers are asked to read this letter carefully and take note of the specific information for each camp. This year, parents are asked to complete the medical information and risk acknowledgement via an online portal rather than the paper-based forms of previous years. The letter contains the web address for the portal. Please note that for any student who has a medical plan (eg for allergy, asthma) a doctor’s plan must be uploaded (as a .pdf document). We suggest parents attention this online registration as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the online system, please contact Wilderness Escape Outdoor Adventures on 8165 2022. Chaplain’s Chat At this week’s Chapel we explored the theme “Acts of kindness can change the world.” The students were then presented with a challenge to do an unexpected act of kindness for someone during the coming week. What a great thing to consider as we commence a new term together. This theme ties in neatly with the Year 5 students undertaking Peer Support Leadership training. During this term pairs of Year 5 students will be Peer Support Leaders to a group of about six Junior Primary students. They will have six sessions together doing a range of social skills and friendship activities. The younger students love this interaction with the Year 5 students, and the Year 5 students grow in confidence and leadership skills. It’s another way to promote kindness and service in our school. Next week’s Communion Service will continue a similar theme for International Friendship Day. 8.45am Thursday 30 July. All Welcome.

No person who is homeless should feel like they’re walking alone.

At 1.30pm on Friday 7 August, all children at SPW, from Reception to Year 7, will take part in a ‘Walk a Mile in my Boots’ event. This is a key event for the Hutt Street Centre and takes places at various places across Adelaide. In order that the whole school community can take part, we have decided to hold our own event at school. Children and staff will walk from the school, down Pier Street to the Esplanade and then along to Moseley Square before returning to school. The procession will be led by the SRC who will carry banners advertising the purpose of our walk. Classes will also carry placards bearing key messages about homelessness. We would love it if as many parents as possible were able to join us for this important walk. If you do plan to join us, please let your class teacher know in advance, and please meet your class at the Pier Street Gates at 1.30pm. To make our event as fun as possible, children, staff and parents are encouraged to walk in ‘crazy coloured socks’. These socks can be bought from school using the order form. All orders should be placed by Tuesday 28 July. No orders after this date will be accepted. All children who purchase socks through this method will be entered into a prize draw to win exciting goodies kindly donated by Activesocks. Any money raised by the sale of socks will go directly to the Hutt Street Centre. It would be fantastic if all members of the school community, children, staff and parents, united by wearing these socks and showing their support of the Hutt Street Centre. As well as walking the mile, we would like to go the extra mile for people experiencing homelessness in South Australia by fundraising. Children are encouraged to seek donations from family, friends and neighbours. The attached sponsor pledge form can be used and donations should be brought on the day and given to class teachers. Alternatively donations can be made directly on the SPW fundraising page by following the link below:

http://huttstcentre.gofundraise.com.au/page/SPWSRC

This event will be a fantastic opportunity for the SPW community to stand together and show their support for a cause, which is an important message for our children. It is hoped that ‘Walk a Mile in my Boots’ will give everyone a better insight into what people who are vulnerable and experiencing homelessness face each cold winter morning – walking the streets to get breakfast, a cup of tea and a hot shower – by experiencing a tiny part of that life for one hour, walking one mile. We very much hope that you are able to join us for what will no doubt prove to be a fun filled afternoon. If you have any questions about this event or any of the work of the SRC please do not hesitate to contact Kerry Ramsay, [email protected] or Barbara Saunderson, [email protected].
