2019 Message from the President
I would like to welcome our members returning from their well deserved breaks and I hope everyone is well rested and ready to prevent accidents and help others find employ-ment. Let us work together towards zero injuries in our workplaces for 2019. Looking back at 2018 we had large growth of members from 99 members in the beginning of the year to 264 at the end of 2018 which is substantial growth , considering HSECP only registered and started in November of 2017. We will go in more detail as we recap on the previous year and look at our plans for the year ahead. On behalf of HSE Connection Point we wish you all the very best for you and your families so lets make 2019 a great year for us all.

We had confirmation for 2018 of 22 members who came forth and let us know that they found employment through HSE Connection Point which is substantially less than our previous years, but none the less 22 members who were employed through our network.
Our HSE Connection Point Website was fully operational within the first month of 2018 although, we are still improving it on a monthly basis to get it to work for our members needs and the organisations needs.
We negotiated free Incident Investigation and Emergency Evacuation training provided to a few members sponsored by IHSS Integrated Health & Safety Solutions Directors.
We negotiated reduced prices up to 50% from Sheilds RSA Management, which were only applicable for our members.
HSE was registered by the Department of Social development as a NPO 215 977.
We commenced with by-monthly video conference meetings with the Advisory Council as well as the Senior Executive council each month.
We participated in the Quarterly VA meetings with the SACPCMP.

We helped over 36 members and 22 non members with their SACPCMP issues and fast tracked a majority members to attend their exams.
We established our Provisional chapters with most regions having their first meeting already and some had a meet and greet before the end of the year.

Meeting with CBE, DOL and the SACPCMP Meeting on a way forward
We convened together with the SACPCMP with our main
purpose to discuss a few pertinent issues which have still not
been resolved since our previous meeting over a year ago.
We also discussed a few new pressing matters which we wanted
a consensus between all organisations on a way moving forward.
We engaged with the SACPCMP on a few burning discussions
relating to the situation of candidates where they are neither
here nor there as far as a professional registration is concerned
and this has placed people in a real precarious situation by
becoming “unemployable” as clients and companies do not want
to employ them and clients no longer are permitted to use them
to apply for permits etc.
The SACPCMP has indicated that they will look into this matter
and we are hoping to have a concrete answer from the
SACPCMP before our next meeting.
We discussed the concern of the Agent panel interview process
and we explicitly made our concerns known that many are
frustrated with the Agent panel interview which has been
under scrutiny due to the “human” factor where people sitting
on the other end of the panel ask questions which they feel are
relevant to the industry and at the end determine if you are
“competent” or not as an Agent.
We expressed our concerns and proposed to the SACPCMP and
the CBE to seriously consider implementing a testing process
which can be marked through an examination software.
These matters were heard by both the SACPCMP and the
Council for the Built Environment with the latter noting these
concerns and Ms. Priscilla Mdlalose also indicated to investigate
these matters as they are valid issues raised and we are looking
forward to the outcomes from her further engagements.
We discussed the SACPCMP assisting us with a few of our
members becoming assessors and moderators and they have
indicated they will forward us the dates on their next available
course.
We discussed the SACPCMP looking at urgently arranging either
a free seminar or a webinar explaining to all registered
personnel how to acquire and maintain CPD points over their
five-year period without having to spend exuberant amounts of
money and days off work at seminars which most can’t even
afford.

Meeting held with the Minister of Public works Meeting with Minister on concerns with SACPCMP
The meeting was scheduled for 14:00 but we started later
because there was another group before us representing the
disabled people of RSA.
There was approximately 35 of us present with the Minister
Thulas Nxesi and his deputy, The CEO of the CBE, the president
of the SACPCMP and Vincent Harmse, Phumudzo Maphaha from
the DOL and many more departments and advisors to the
Minister were all present.
Warren Manning was not given a chance to speak due to the
court case being sub judice so he got stopped from addressing
the Minister.
There was 9 concerned members in attendance and due to
limited time only a few of the members were permitted to speak
and address the Minster with our concerns.
We brought three points to the table which were:
1) Temporary suspension of the registration process.
2) A full investigation into the Agent’s registered and the
processes followed from 2013.
3) A new independent body only for Occupational health and
safety professionals.
The Minister gave us 7 days to draft a motivational letter as to
why he should implement these 3 Points raised.
He will issue the letter to the SACPCMP for a chance to respond
to our points and reasons for our requests.
He has indicated that he will assist us and he is happy that we
have chosen this process to engage with them and not gone to
the courts.
I am positive something good will come out of these meetings
and we having a follow up early next year.
