Installation Note for the Cisco 12-Volt UPOE Pass-Through Splitter

Product Numbers: WS-UPOE-12VPSPL

This publication describes how to install the Cisco 12-Volt Universal Power Over Ethernet (UPOE) pass-through splitter.

The pass-through splitter kit contains the pass-through splitter box (WS-UPOE-12VPSPL) and one of the DC power cords listed in Table 1. You order the DC power cord for your specific application at the time that you order the pass-through splitter box.

Note The DC power cords cannot be ordered separately.

The pass-through splitter is a passive, standalone device for use with Cisco’s proprietary 60 W UPOE+ module (WS-X4748-UPOE+E). The pass-through splitter accepts a 10/100/1000BASE-T signal from the Ethernet module and outputs an Ethernet signal and 12 VDC power to the powered device.

Note The pass-through splitter operates only with Cisco’s proprietary 60 W UPOE+ module and is not compatible with 30 W PoE+ power-sourcing equipment (PSE).

Pass-Through Splitter Box Connectors and LEDs

The WS-X4748-UPOE+E module can provide up to 1,440 W of inline power to attached powered devices. The 1440 W limits the module to a maximum of 24 ports at 60 W per port. Additional limitations are set by the number of WS-X4748-UPOE+E modules installed in the switch chassis and the wattage of the power supplies installed in the switch chassis.

The primary two pairs of UPOE IN connector pins (pins 1, 2, 3, and 6) provide Power over Ethernet+ (PoE+) per IEEE standards 802.3af and 802.3at. This connection provides the signal pair and 30 W of power (600 mA at 48 VDC) to the powered device. If the secondary two pairs of UPOE IN connector pins (pins 4, 5, 7, and 8) are configured to provide power, UPOE power (60 W, 5 A at 12 VDC) is available through the splitter box 12V DC OUT connector to operate the powered device.

Pass-Through Splitter Box Connectors and LEDsFigure 1 shows front and rear views of the pass-through splitter box with the major features identified. Table 2 describes the pass-through splitter box LEDs and connectors.

Installing the Pass-Through Splitter Box

Note The combined power output of the PoE+ OUT connector and the 12V DC PWR connector is up to 60 W.

Installing the Pass-Through Splitter BoxTo install the splitter box, follow these steps:

Step 1 Unpackage the pass-through splitter box and the DC power cord for your application.

Step 2 Position the pass-through splitter box near the PoE device.

Note The pass-through splitter box has two mounting tabs (one at either end) that accept ANSI No. 6 size screws. If necessary, the box can be secured to a surface using two screws.

Feature Description

PoE+ PWR LED Green—The UPOE port on the splitter box is connected to an active UPOE port (WS-X4748-UPOE+E Ethernet port operating in four-pair, forced mode) and power is being passed through the splitter box PoE+ OUT port to a powered device.

Note The 12V DC PWR LED is also lit green at this time.

Off—The splitter box is operating under any set of conditions other than the one described above.

PoE+ OUT connector The PoE+ OUT connector provides both the Ethernet signal pair and PoE+ power (30 W) to the powered device.

12V DC PWR LED • Yellow—Only the primary pair of UPOE IN connector pins (RJ-45 connector) are receiving power, or the CLI power inline four-pair forced command is not enabled on the UPOE module port. There is no PoE+ output and there is no 12 VDC available at the 12V DC OUT connector.

• Green—Both the primary and secondary pairs of UPOE IN connector pins are receiving power from the Ethernet module (WS-X4748-UPOE+E).

• Off—Neither of the pairs of the UPOE connector pins are receiving power.

12V DC OUT connector The 12V DC OUT connector passes 60 W (5 A at 12 VDC) of power to the powered device.

UPOE IN connector Located on the pass-through splitter box back panel, the UPOE IN connector receives the Ethernet signal pair and 60 W of power from the WS-X4748-UPOE+E Ethernet module port over a Category 5 TIA-EIA-568-A compliant or better (newer) cable.

Configuring the Device

Step 3 Plug one end of a Category 5 TIA-EIA-568-A compliant or better (newer) interface cable into a WS-X4748-UPOE+E Ethernet module port.

Note To ensure reliable operation and to comply with regulatory limits, the interface cable between the Ethernet module port and the pass-through splitter box should not exceed 328 ft (100 m).

Step 4 Connect the other end of the interface cable to the UPOE IN connector on the pass-through splitter box.

Step 5 Connect a Category 5 TIA-EIA-568-A compliant or better (newer) network interface cable between the POE+ OUT port on the pass-through splitter box and the powered device.

Note To ensure reliable operation and to comply with regulatory limits, the interface cable between the pass-through splitter box and the powered device should not exceed 32.8 ft (10 m).

Step 6 Attach the appropriate DC power cord between the 12V DC OUT connector on the pass-through splitter box and the DC power connector on the powered device.

Configuring the DeviceThe pass-through splitter box cannot be configured. Power configuration is handled through the WS-X4748-UPOE+E Ethernet module that attaches to the pass-through splitter box.
