Installation, Operation and Maintenance of the

Floating Tidal Energy Device ‘SeaGen-F’

Ir. Allard van Hoeken MBA Head of New Energy Bluewater Energy Services

Over 35 years of marine engineering and operations of permanently moored systems

• FPSOs: Design, Build, Own and Operate

• SPM: Single Point Moorings

• Tidal Energy

Why not floating ?

• Visible is ugly – A fleet of canoes in the water is nicer to look at than a coal,

gas or nuclear plant…and hard to see at all from the shore

• Wave loads? – Design and basin test for it. Experience > 35 years

• Breaking mooring lines? – Same as above. If an FPSO breaks loose, the damage would

be much worse.

• Hazard for ships? – A hazard you can see at the surface is better than an invisible

underwater surprise

Lower cost, lower risk, more energy

Higher energy production

Easy installation

Easy access Protected equipment Dry connections

Installation

System is designed for minimum installation costs

• Pre-installed mooring system

• Floating tow-out and hook-up, no offshore heavy lifting

• Scalable: Adapt only anchor points for different seabed conditions

• Reduced draft, raising turbines

Operations and maintanance

System is designed for safe and easy operations and maintancne to minimize costs

• Option 1: Direct access offshore to inspect, repair or replace vulnerable electronics

Operations and maintenance • Option 2: Visual inspection of turbines by camera from platform

• Option 3: Lift turbines above water for further inspection and problem solving

• Option 4: Disconnect unit and tow to shore, with relatively simple vessels without any heavy lifting

Thank you!
