The book contains a selection of the best 30 papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Cartography and GIS held in Riviera (Varna), Bulgaria in June 2014. Announcing the Chilean edition of the Barbara Petchenik Competition on the website of the Military Geographical Institute of Chile (http://www.igm.cl/ )

Map of the center area of Areal city (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil), which is the result of a MSc research entitled “It should be on a map, because it is part of the world: Mapping with

Children in Areal (RJ)” and developed by Reinaldo José de Lima under the guidance of Prof. Jader Janer Moreira Lopes at the Fluminense Federal University in Niterói (2014).

Front cover and some maps from the “Atlas Geográfico Escolar” for Elementary Schools

published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics(IBGE) in 2010, which can be freely downloaded from: http://biblioteca.ibge.gov.br/index.php/biblioteca-

Two pages of the volume 11 of the series entitled “Estudio”, which was especially dedicated

to Cartography in the school year 2004-2005. The editor of the series is the Adanae Association, formed by ex-pupils of the Estudio Elementary-Secondary and High School in

Madrid, Spain. The title of this chapter is “Cartography for excursions”.

Other nice map from the atlas entitled „Viktiga kartor - för äventyrare och dagdrömmare” (Key maps for daydreamers and adventurers), which was presented in our two previous

newsletters. In the bottom right corner her author and designer, Sarah Sheppard (Sweden).

On September of this year I had the opportunity to visit (together with professors and

students of the Paulista State University) an Elementary School in an encampment near to the town of Jacarezinho (Paraná State, Brazil). The encampment is placed in a “latifundio”

(large landed estate) occupied by peasant families, which are members of the Rural Workers Landless Movement (MST). It was a unique experience to see how the families organized

the teaching of their children counting only with a minimum of resources.

Front cover of the Anniversary volume of the “Children Map the World” series to be published

by ESRI Press very soon, crowning the collaboration developed by ESRI Press and ICA editors from last February. In 2013 we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the first Barbara

Petchenik International World Map Design Competition, organized within the activities of the 16th International Cartographic Conference held in Cologne (Germany) in 1993. By this

reason the book contains not only a selection of 50 drawings named to the Barbara Petchenik Competition 2015, but also a special selection of 20 drawings (never published

before) from the competitions organized between 1993 and 2011.

And where do we plan to meet next year?

Our commission together with the ICA Commissions on Maps for Blind and Partially Sighted People, Planetary Cartography and Cartography for Early Warning and Crisis Management began the organization of a Joint ICA Symposium to be held in the Institute of Geosciences of the Fluminense Federal University in the city of Niterói on 21-22 August, two days before the 27th International Cartographic Conference in Rio de Janeiro. More detailed information

and website of the event coming very soon!!!
