J/24 World Championship 2018 and J/24 Italian Open Will Take Place at Fraglia Vela Riva, Garda Lake in Italy

Work continues in organizing the J/24 World Championship 2018, which will take place in the waters of Garda Lake from 24-31 August. On the same race course from 30 May-3 June, the 38th Open J/24 National Championship will be an excellent opportunity to test the race course and the organization.

Exactly 10 years after Cannigione, the prestigious event returns to Italy—a great satisfaction for the Italian Class and for all the J/24 crews, which rewards the work and the efforts of these years.

Ten races are scheduled, during which many talented crews will take part, not only attracted by the extraordinary race field dominated by constant and sustained winds called “Peler” and “Ora,” but also by the splendid scenery of Riva del Garda (which is located in the northern part of Garda Lake, the so-called Garda Trentino, in a narrow gorge near the Dolomites) and the renowned organizational skills of the Fraglia Vela Riva, one of the most prestigious sailing clubs in Italy.

“After the last October tour of the Club, the members of the World Council Meeting recognized the suitability of the structures and appreciated the professional competence of the Fraglia Vela Riva,” explained the President of the Italian Class J/24, Pietro Diamanti. Moreover, it was decided that at the J/24 World Championship 2018, participation will be limited to 80 boats.

In the period between the National Open Championship and the J/24 World Championship 2018, boats can be left at the Circolo Vela Arco ([email protected]) in a fenced yard. For more information, contact Matteo (+39 0464 505086) for a total cost of € 150.00.

For better following of the J/24 World Championship 2018 and for downloading the race announcements and useful information, a site entirely dedicated to the Worlds is available (www.J/24worlds2018.it) and a Facebook page (J/24 World Championship 2018), which will be joined by the sites of the Fraglia della Vela Riva (www.fragliavelariva.it) and the Italian J/24 (www.J/24.it).

The Italian Fleet, as host nation, has the right to have (besides the 24 pre-selected boats) other berths for the 2017 Italian Champion, for a female crew, for an Under 25 crew, and two boats chosen by the Italian Class. The Italian crews selected up to now are the Marina Militare with Bonanno Ignazio as National Champion 2017, the shipowners Pietro Diamanti, Massimo Frigerio, Marco Stefanoni with the helmsman Francesco Bertone, Fabio De Rossi, Massimo Mariotti with Francesco Cruciani, Eugenia De Giacomo, Ruggero Spreafico, Roberta Banfo with Luca Macchiarini, Fabio Apollonio, Gianni Riccobono, Paolo Rinaldi, Vincenzo Mercuri with Angelo Crepoli, the CV Arzachena with Aurelio Bini, Mariolino Di Fraia, LN Olbia with Marco Frulio, Mauro Benfatto with Fabio Mazzoni, Roberto Dessy with Davide Schintu, Francesca Focardi with Dario Luciani, Luca Gaglione, Massimo Ruggiero with Giuseppe Miglietta, Francesco Mastropierro with Tony Mancina and Sandro Negro. To complete the Italian J/24 Class fleet will be Andrea Fronti’s women’s team and Matteo Bertolotti’s Under 25 team. The Council of the Class has also decided to assign one of the two wild cards to Giuliano Catarozzi, while the second one will be made available to the host club for one of its members. The other two places, still to be assigned, will be awarded according to the ranking of the first stage of the 2018 National Circuit, namely the Gulf Anzio and Neptune Trophy.

After the Winter Championships which have engaged our Fleets in numerous racing fields, the 2018 National Circuit starts. It is divided into eight rounds from April to early December, and will assign as usual the J/24 Trophy to the best skipper/shipowner and the Perpetual Challenge Trophy Francesco Ciccolo. Also this year, the waters in front of Anzio-Nettuno will play host to the opening stage, the

Anzio and Nettuno Trophy, which will be organized from 6-8 April by the Yacht Club Nettuno. After the opening round, the National Circuit will continue with the National Regatta organized from 30 April-1 May by the Italian Navy League section of Livorno within the International Sailing Academy and City of Livorno 2018 Sailing Week. Soon after, the attention of all Italian and foreign crews will certainly be turned to one of the most anticipated events of the season: the National Open Championship. The fourth stage of the National Circuit on 29-30 September, again on Garda Lake, is the traditional Italian Cup held by the Circolo Nautico Brenzone. We will continue with the National Regatta at the Amici della Vela Sailing Club in the waters of Cervia on 13-14 October. For the sixth run, the fleet will move to Marina di Carrara where, on 27-28 October, the local Club Nautico Marina di Carrara will organize the National Regatta. The seventh stage is a novelty: the trip to the beautiful Golfo Aranci, where on 10-11 November, the Olbia Section of the Italian Navy League will host the National Regatta. The 2018 Circuit will end with the Pugliese reconfirmation of the National Regatta in the welcoming harbor of Mar Grande proposed on 1-2 December by the Sailing Club Ondabuena Academy of Taranto.

“The J/24 Class represents a piece of the sail history and proves to be always very lively and widespread throughout the world,” commented the President of Fraglia Vela Riva, Giancarlo Mirandola. “After hosting the National Championships in Riva del Garda in 1999 and in 2009, it is really an honor to be able to organize the World Championship and the National Championship in the same year.”

Official technical sponsor of the J/24 World Championship 2018 will be Alce Nero, the brand of over 1,000 farmers and organic beekeepers active since the 70s in Italy and worldwide. They will provide all the teams with special food boxes for the whole period of the event. Over 300 references by Alce Nero are available in 30 countries (Europe, Asia, America) and online at: www.alcenero.com. [email protected]

IJCA Technical ReportBy Alex Finsterbusch, IJCA Technical Chair

Dear all, let me start this issue with a short introduction of myself.

I started in the world of sailing in the year 1979, when I was barely

seven years old, with my first experience in an Optimist (as do most

of us that start off at that early age). Soon I discovered that sailing in a

team was much more fun, so I stepped up to a two-man dinghy in the

Cadet. After that, I sailed in many other Classes as well as the J/24 mostly

handling sheets. Around the year 1997 and thanks to my engineering

skills, I was sucked into the technical world of sailing (starting with

measuring small dinghies); and by the year 2000, I was already appointed

National Measurer for the J/24 Class. My first big appointment was a

South American Championship that was held in 2003 in Buenos Aires,

and many other Championships followed after that (Chairing the Pan

Americans of 2007, helping at the 2009 Worlds in Annapolis, 2011 in

Buenos Aires and the 2012 Worlds in Rochester). In 2015, I was part of the

measuring team of the Toronto Pan Ams and had the incredible honor to

serve in the Rio Olympics in 2016 as part of the 470 Technical Committee.

My first appointment as IM (International Measurer) was in 2003 for the

Cadet Class, the 420 in 2006 and J/24 in 2015, and topping out with my

appointment as 470 IM in 2016.

I have been an active member of the IJCA International Technical

Committee since 2012 and helped our former Chairman, Tim Winger,

with the redraft of the Class Rules. In addition, I started being an

Instructor for World Sailing in 2007, handling seminars and clinics

worldwide (many of the actual IMs from North America were trained

by me). This also allowed me to travel around to meet people who

share my interest in measuring and gave me the chance to understand

what sailing means in different continents—but how its passion stays

the same regardless of language and culture. Finally in 2012, I was also

included into the World Sailing Sub-Committees that in many aspects

rule what happens in our sport. Today, I am the vice chairman of the

IMSC (International Measurer’s Sub-Committee) and participate in the

Equipment Rules Sub-Committee and many other Working Parties within

World Sailing.

In my “other life,” I am a mechanical engineer, working as a plant manager

that manufactures large high voltage transformers. I’ve been happily

married since 2003 and am a proud father of a son and a daughter.

I welcome your questions and feedback at [email protected],

and look forward to meeting you at events around the world!

Be sure to check out the recently added Vendor & Parts list at

http://www.j24class.org/useful-links/. This should be very helpful in the

upkeep of your J/24. The mast, boom and rudder need to come from a

licensed builder so that is why keeping the suppliers list as current as

possible is important and we need the support of the J/24 community.

The 35th All Japan Championship was held November 23-26, 2017 at Wakayama Sailing Center, and 20 boats attended. Average wind speeds were around 9 knots, however all teams struggled with sailing because wind force change was occurring very rapidly during this regatta. Among them, Gekko’s and Siesta’s crews correctly saw a wind speed change and kept top positions under strict conditions at all times. Eventually Team Gekko got first place, and as a result that team has won three consecutive The All Japan Championship.

The UK J/24 Class Association has released its schedule of qualifying events in 2018 for the World Championship in 2019, and include all the favourite UK venues of the J/24 Class.

There is huge interest in the UK for the 2018 World Championship at Lake Garda, and there is a waiting list of people wanting to attend, so pressure is starting to be applied to those who qualified in 2017 to commit to attending and to book their entry slot.

Many UK J/24s are planning on attending Kiel Week and then leaving boats in Europe in preparation for the Worlds at Garda.

With preparations well underway for the 2020 Worlds in the UK, boats are being snapped up by UK sailors keen to qualify in 2019 for the event which will be held at Parkstone Yacht Club in Poole. The club is about to complete a new clubhouse which is going to be, without doubt, one of the most impressive yacht club venues in the UK, and the organising committee are excited about holding this prestigious event with the new facilities.
