Sustainable Food Systems and Global Education:
priorities for teachers in addressing global food issues at school

Cities: Warszawa, Kraków
The most relevant Global Education topics related to the sustainable food
systems are:
● ways of food production (ecological vs conventional)
● meat production and consumption (influence on climate and natural resources)
● importance of local food production and consumption for development of rural areas
The biggest challenges in primary and secondary schools are:
● low awareness of food production ● to get pupils attention and interest● to popularize food as a topic which is
worth of deeper reflexion● to show in convincing way the bad
influence of junk food on health● to implement interesting educational tools
The biggest challenges in high schools are:● to popularize food as a topic which is
worth of deeper reflexion● encouraging students to spread knowledge
taking from lessons in their family surroundings
● interesting and comprehensive presentation of interlinks between different food issues
● tackling stereotypes (e.g youth is not interested in food issues)
An example of Lesson Plans implemented: (innovative features and lessons learnt)
● students from rural areas empowerment● comprehensive perspective on environmental
and social aspects of food production and consumption
● examples used in LP close to students’ daily life
● mix of educational tools: films/animations, discussions, role play, problems deliberation, working on texts
