it’s football season, school is back in session, Oktoberfest is here and much more marks the month of September.

South Florida is offering plenty of events this month to cool you off after the sizzling summer season.

Kick start your month by sampling an infinite assortment of the most delicious culinary treats in all of South Florida at the Broward March of Dimes’ Signature Chefs Auction. Held on September 17th from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa, located at 3555 S. Ocean Dr., Hollywood, the 18th annual event is sure to please anyone’s palate. Dozens of renowned chefs from Fort Lauderdale’s most popular restaurants will masterfully create their most famous dishes, all in sample sizes so you’ll have room to experience every extraordinary, mouthwatering taste. Enjoy live music while you bid on distinctive silent and live auction items all to help moms have healthier babies. Proceeds from the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auc-tion help fund support programs and research to help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies and prevent birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. More than four million babies were born in the United States last year and the March of Dimes helped each and every one through research, education, vaccines and break-throughs. For more information on this event, call 754-300-2614.

Mark your calendars for another charitable event and a fun night out! The Jessica June Children’s Cancer Founda-tion 10th Anniversary Celebration will take place on September 18th at 7 pm at Vibe Las Olas.

In observance of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and its “Beating Cancer Together” campaign launch, the party will include an open bar by Bacardi and Premier Beverage, specialty hors d’oeuvres by YOLO, live interactive entertainment, raffle, silent auction, dancing and a surprise

appearance! For 10 years, JJCCF has served 2,500 children and family members, raising an excess of $1.6 million to provide emergency financial assistance for children fighting cancer. The Foun-dation commemorates its 10 year anniversary by launching an all-inclusive fundraising campaign entitled, “Beating Cancer Together.” The an-niversary party is a milestone for the campaign as it provides a platform for organizations, big or small, local businesses, teams and individuals to join founder, Sandra Muvdi, in her quest to raise $200,000 to continue to sustain the services it provides to families affected by childhood cancer. For more details, call 954-712-6322.

The popular Bus Loop event is back and this month it’s on a new route in West Palm Beach. On Saturday, September 27th, join your friends on the West Palm Beach Bus Loop, which con-nects Clematis Street, City Place, and Northwood Village. their crafts and products including performances, dance, drawing, photography, sculpting and others. Come and support your local arts and entertainment and enjoy a beautiful day on the New River! Admission is free; for more informa-tion, call 954-468-1541.

Come hungry for the ‘Food Trucks at Arts Park’ event… Every Monday night from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm, attendees can enjoy a delicious array of comfort foods at Arts Park at Young Circle, located at 1 Young Circle, Hollywood. Cheer on your favorite football teams at one of your local sports bars! Football season has arrived and that means lots of beer and drink specials, appetizers, buckets and much more. South Florida bars and restaurants will offer many specials to locals and visitors, check out your favorite watering holes for football season deals.

There will also be many blockbusters and popcorn this month! Be sure to check out one or more of these films at your local theatre. In ‘If I

Stay’, Chloe Moretz stars as comatose teen who has an out-of-body experience following a car accident that kills her entire family in this MGM/Summit Entertainment co-production directed by R.J. Cutler, and adapted from the book by Gayle Forman. Inspired by a true story, ‘When The Game Stands Tall’ tells the remarkable journey of legendary football coach Bob Ladouceur (Jim Caviezel), who took the De La Salle High School Spartans from obscurity to a 151-game winning streak that shattered all records for any American sport. Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller’s visually stunning “Sin City” graphic novels back to the screen in ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’. Weaving together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales, the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’ is the follow up to Rodriguez and Miller’s 2005 groundbreaking film, ‘Frank Miller’s Sin City’. Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers ventures into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror, the film, ‘As Above, So Below’, reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons

that come back to haunt us all. In the movie, ‘Dolphin Tale 2’, several years have passed since Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble) and the team at Clearwater Marine Hospital gave Winter the dolphin a prosthetic tail, thereby saving her life. Now however, a new crisis has arisen. Winter’s elderly surrogate mother, Panama, has died, which leaves Winter without a pool mate. Ac-cording to USDA regulations, dolphins cannot be housed alone; unless a new companion can be found quickly, Clearwater will lose Winter to another aquarium. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in action! Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sew-ers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O’Neil and her cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan. Captured with IMAX® 3D cam-eras, “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar” takes audi-ences on a spectacular journey to the remote and wondrous world of Madagascar. Lemurs arrived in Madagascar as castaways millions of years ago and evolved into hundreds of diverse species but are now highly endangered.

InTheBiz®

Bartender of the Month

What is your name? My Name is Danielle Traxinger

Do you have a nickname? I have 2 names that people call me, Some people call me“D” and some call me “Trax” .

Where are you originally from? I am originally from New Jersey

Where do you work? I work at E11EVEN Miami

How long have you been bartending? I have been bartending about 4 years

How long have you been InTheBiz®? I have been In The Biz® for about 10 years

What are your hobbies outside of work? I love to keep it random and try to keep a certain amount of spontaneity in my life, so I can usually be convinced to participate in off the wall adventures. On the other side of the spectrum I also like to have some down time where I like to paint, read, and watch bad “B movies” on Netflix.

Why did you become a bartender? I became a bartender for the money, of course! Also, I liked the idea of more responsibility and room for creativity. To me, being a bartender is like being a liquid chef.

What is your favorite Drink? -It changes from week to week but right now I’m really enjoying Hendrick’s gin with muddled grapefruit and soda water.

What skills do you possess that make you a good bartender? I am a quick learner, easy going, and consider myself pretty efficient behind the bar.

What advice would you give to new bartenders just starting out? Always strive to be better than you were the day before. Also, go to other bars and restaurants and try their specialty cocktails. “Market research” like that will help expand your knowledge of the field you’re in.

What is your favorite Drink to make? Anything I can be creative with. It feels great when I create a specialty cocktail and the guest loves it.

What is your least favorite drink to make? Slushies, of course!!

Is there anything else that you would like to add? If you haven’t checked out E11EVEN Miami yet you’re missing out! We never close so whether you’re looking to relax during the day (we have an awesome happy hour 12-8pm M-F) or you’re planning to party all night, we’ve got you covered! Hope to see you there soon!

Swinging for a good cause at “Golfing for the King” Tournament By Nicol JeNkiNs EDITOR

Golfers will soon unite for a charitable cause at the annual “Golfing for the King” Golf Classic.

For the ninth year, the Coral Springs Mar-tin Luther King, Jr. Committee has hosted the “Golfing for the King” Golf Classic to raise funds for scholarships for local high school students. Mark your calendar for this year’s event to be held on Monday, October 24 at Heron Bay Golf Club, located at 11801 Heron Bay Boulevard, Coral Springs.

The Golf Classic will benefit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund for needy Coral Springs high school students, regardless of ethnicity. In past years through the Com-mittee’s efforts, more than 120 high school seniors have received scholarships in varying amounts based primarily on financial need. The students will apply the scholarship money towards their tuition costs at a university or

other educational institution of their choice. The scholarship is available to high school se-niors who live in Coral Springs and attend one of the five high schools serving the City in-cluding: J.P. Taravella High, Coral Springs High, Stoneman Douglas High, Coral Springs Charter and Coral Glades High.

“Our mission is to match the funds given to this cause by the Coral Springs Community Chest. The entire proceeds of the golf tour-nament go directly into the MLK Scholarship Fund. The overall mission of the MLK Commit-tee is to: convey the legacy of Dr. King; par-ticipate in the development and promotion of the programs representative of his legacy; promote intercultural activities that will en-rich the community; facilitate the resolution of civic and social problems and to work to-gether toward achieving common goals; and unite persons of all ethnic heritages. By of-fering a scholarship to financially-needy high school students, regardless of creed or ethnic-ity, we feel we meet our mission,” said Joyce

Campos, Community Relations Manager for the City of Coral Springs, “The Committee tries hard to raise the bar each year to raise more money for the scholarship program. We really need more people to sign on to this worthy cause.”

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and Shot-gun begins at 8:30 a.m. Registration fee in-cludes breakfast, time on the range, bever-ages on the course, and an awards luncheon. The fee to participate is $125 per person or $500 per foursome.

Since the scholarship program is entirely dependent upon the generous contributions of individuals and corporations, your dona-tion to this cause is very important and much-needed. All donations are tax-deductible as well.

To register for golf or for sponsorship op-portunities, contact Joyce Campos at 954-344-1005 or [email protected].

‘Lucky’s Tavern’ where tavern meets nightclubBy Nicol JeNkiNsEditor

The instant you walk into Lucky’s Tavern in Fort Lauderdale - Home of the 3 Legged Dog, you feel right at home.

On any given night, you are welcomed by friendly bartenders pouring your favorite mixed drinks and shots, a DJ spinning pulsating beats, shot girls dancing on the neon illumi-nated bar, bar goers competing at a game of darts and dancing the night away.

Located in the historic Himmarshee Village in downtown Fort Lauderdale on 2nd Street, Lucky’s Tavern has been entertaining party goers for 3 ½ years. Open 7 nights a week til 4 am, Lucky’s is the perfect party destination… featuring Video DJ’s, Live Music, over 100 Premium Craft Beers, Special Events, Live En-tertainment, Darts and much more. Plus, they never charge a cover!

Lucky’s can be best described as the perfect combination of a tavern and a club.

“We have a combined tavern and club atmosphere; not a dive bar and not too fancy. Lucky’s is a place where you can come dressed up or dressed down. Although we do have a dress code Wednesday through Saturday so don’t show up too dressed down,” said Jon Slack, owner of Lucky’s Tavern.

Video DJ’s spinning all the latest house and club music are guaranteed every night of the week! Lucky’s also has Reggae night the last Monday of every month, and they host School of Rock concerts often so the young musicians have a forum to showcase their music. Games, fun and a great place to unwind after a long day’s work or for a fun weekend night out.

“The atmosphere is a bit divided in Lucky’s. Towards the front main bar, the music is loud, we have many lighting effects and everyone is on the dance floor and stage dancing. At the back bar, the music is low so people can mingle

and hang out and talk. In the back, you can also play darts, giant Jenga and beer pong,” added Slack.

Specials can be found on drinks on different nights of the week. It’s 50% off Happy Hours Monday through Friday; Ladies Drink Free every Wednesday from 11 pm to 2 am; Chive Special: Anyone wearing a Chive shirt gets 15% off their tabs; Beer Buckets specials during football season; $5 Deep Eddy Friday’s and many more specials throughout the week. And it’s always In The Biz® Night every night with special ITB® discounts!

Lucky’s always gives back to charity by host-ing numerous charity events each year. They support the Marine Industry Cares Foundation supporting Kids In Distress, host Chive meetups each year and have raised thousands for www.chivecharities.org. Lucky’s staff also work with many individuals to hold charity events at the bar, especially during the holiday season.

Beer drinkers will also be in for a treat… if you haven’t seen Lucky’s beer vault, you should stop by and take a look! A large metal vault that houses their most precious com-modity… Beer, And lots of it… Over 100 bottled and draft beers. Lucky’s rotates their beer list regularly so they constantly have new beers for

College football returns With florida State the favorite to repeat

SpOrTS

By ALLEN LEvIN sPORTs EDITOR

After a long 8-month layoff, college foot-ball is finally back.

And the nation’s top team resides in Florida.

The Florida State Seminoles enter the 2014 season as the favorites to repeat as National Champions, and for good reason.

FSU returns 15 starters from last year’s undefeated team, none more important than Heisman winner Jameis Winston, who is also the early favorite to snag the prestigious award again.

The Seminoles are the unanimous preseason No. 1 ranked program in the country, and started off the season the right way with a victory over Oklahoma State to begin their title defense.

While FSU is clearly the top dog in the country, other Sunshine State teams have high hopes for this year.

The University of Central Florida has grand

aspirations to be the best “Non-Power 5” program in the nation after their best year in school history in 2013.

The Knights went 12-1 and beat Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl to finish No. 10 in the country.

They dropped their first game of the 2014 season to Penn State in a close matchup, but will likely have a strong season with a stout defense and lots of great playmakers return-ing on offense looking to prove they weren’t a

one-year fluke.

The Florida Gators will look to rebound after a nightmare 2013 season that saw them go 4-8 and lose to an FCS team.

Jeff Driskel will attempt to lead the offense after an injury-plagued season and bring the Gators back into SEC relevance.

As for the Miami Hurricanes, they are com-ing off a loss to Louisville in the Russell Athletic Bowl, but had a strong recruiting class and can be a threat in the ACC.

The state of Florida boasts a strong quartet of teams that can all accomplish big things this season.

But it will be FSU that looks to attain the ultimate goal- win the national championship again- in the new 4-team playoff system.

It’s going to be an exciting year for college football in Florida.

Miami Dolphins finish preseason Strong, gear up for Season

The Miami Dolphins come into the 2014 season with some question marks.

However, after a 3-1 showing in the preseason, the Dolphins have appeared to an-swer some of those questions and look strong heading into the season.

Last season, the Fins were 8-6 and just need-ed one win to advance to the playoffs. But, some bad breaks and untimely play caused them to lose two straight games to finish the season and miss the postseason.

This year, they will look to correct those mistakes and progress from an 8-win team that missed the playoffs by mere inches.

After dropping the first preseason game to the Falcons, Miami won three in a row to close

out the exhibition season and provide promise for the year.

While those games don’t count on the team’s record, there were some key takeaways from both the offense and defense.

Coach Joe Philbin has said he’d like his club

to average 25 points a game this season after struggling to score last year. The Dolphins didn’t quite do that in the preseason, but they put up 25 in a win over the Cowboys in a game that featured the starters for the majority of the game.

The running game, which was anemic last season, came alive under offseason signee Knowshown Moreno. Moreno posted 64 yards and looked like he could be a legitimate starting back for the Fins.

As for the defense, Miami only allowed 15.8 points per game over four games and were able to limit big plays and touchdown drives.

While preseason games don’t necessary indicate how a team will perform in the regular season, there is no doubt that the Dolphins showed some major strides as they enter the 2014 campaign.
