IEC 60137 - 2017 IEEE C57.19.00- 2004 and C57.19.01- 2000

Standards do not recommend any technologies

Most common standards for bushing transformers include test procedures, certain limits and properties

The utility/OEM should define the technology i.e. RIP / RIS / OIP

RIP (Resin Impregnated Paper) RIS (Resin Impregnated Synthetic) OIP (Oil Impregnated Paper)

The most common Standard i.e. IEC 60137 as well as IEEE C57.19.00 and C57.19.01 do not recommend orspecify any kind of technology of which the bushings should be made of. But CIGRE does.

Official papers published by CIGRE

The risk of fires being initiated by a failure of a RIP (Resin Impregnated Paper) or a RIS (Resin Impregnated Synthetic) bushing issignificantly less than … (page 3, §3.2)

Benefits of capacity – controlled electric field:

– homogeneous electric field in the insulation material

– lower maximum electrical stress on the insulation

– longer operational safety

– Standard available IEC 60137 and IEEE C57.19.00 and …01

– Measuring Tap / Voltage Tap on each bushing

Type of electrical field distribution

Due to safety aspects we recommend to specify composite insulation ….

Routine test limits according: ABB Micafil bushings routine test limits

IEC 60137 – 2017 // IEEE C57.19.01 - 2000

- Dissipation factor (tand), Power Factor < 0.40%

- Partial Discharge < 2 pC at 2x Um/√3

Example: RTXF 420-1675/1000 KSI

- 2 x 420kV/√3 = 485kV

- Partial Discharge acceptable at 485kV < 2pC

IEC 60137 – 2017 // IEEE C57.19.01 - 2000

- Dissipation factor (tand), Power Factor < 0.7%

- Partial Discharge < 10 pC at Um

Example: RTXF 420-1675/1000 KSI

- Partial Discharge acceptable at 420kV < 10pC

Ensures a long lifetime for bushings and your equipment

Routine Test: limits of dissipation factor (tand) as well as partial discharge

Voids causing partial discharge between al. layers Increase of capacitance due to short circuit of al layers

Typical sign of short circuit of aluminum layers is an increase of capacitance

Partial Discharge causes acceleration of aging

The standard IEC 60137 refers to IEC 60815-2 and -3:

– Site severity determination (pollution on site)

• Light 16 mm/kV

• Medium 20 mm/kV

• Heavy 25 mm/kV

• Very heavy 31 mm/kV

MICAFIL bushings standard is 31mm/kV related to Um

MICAFIL bushings standard is 31mm/kV

Pollution level affects creepage distance and arcing distance

On which altitude will the transformer be installed:

All standard bushings are designed for an installation altitude of1000m / 3300ft.According IEC 60137 §5.2 as well as IEEE C57.19.00-2004 §4.2.1

Indicate the altitude in your specification, if you exceed 1000m or3300ft.

Installation altitude

Depending on the preference of the utility /OEM

RIP bushings RIS bushings

– RIP bushings are very sensitive to humidity

– Paper absorbs humidity which has an impact to the quality ofthe condenser core (increase of tand)

– Precautions have to be taken

Specify the way of storage especially for spare bushings
