Intro to the Nervous System-Functions of the NS The functions of the

nervous system are accomplished by the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system.

Page 3: Introduction the Nervous System

PNS & CNS The peripheral

nervous system, which consists of nerves and supporting cells, collects information about the body’s external and internal environment.

The central nervous system, which consists of the brain and spinal cord, processes that information and creates a response that is delivered to the appropriate part of the body through the peripheral nervous system.

NeuronsFunction of Neurons

The messages carried by the nervous system are electrical signals called impulses.

Nervous system impulses are transmitted by cells called neurons.

Page 5: Introduction the Nervous System

3 Types of Neurons

Sensory neurons carry impulses from the sense organs, such as the eyes and ears, to the spinal cord and brain.

Motor neurons carry impulses from the brain and the spinal cord to muscles and glands.

Interneurons process information from sensory neurons and then send commands to other interneurons or motor neurons.

Neuron GameDirections

1. Form a circle. 2. Imagine that everyone is a neuron (brain cell).

a. Right hand=Dendrites (input). b. Arms are the axon. c. Left hand=axon terminal (output).

3. Holds hands! You will be at the right. The student to teachers left will be the last neuron. (This Student needs a timer!)

4. Teacher will send information along the neural network (neuron pathway) through hand squeezes. The “squeezes” are the information being transferred.

5. When teacher squeezes the adjacent student’s right hand, they will then squeeze their left hand, and so on.

6. Start the timer as soon as you squeeze the first students hand. Stop the timer when the last student squeezes teachers hand.

7. Repeat 4-6 times! **record time on the board or somewhere visible

Neuron Game!

Reflect:

1. What happened the first time we played the game?

2. Why was our first time the slowest?

3. What happened to our time as we practiced more and more

times?

4. How did you feel the first time we played? How did you feel

the last game we played?
