Match ReportsEkiden Relay 2010 – Harriers ‘A’ Team Lap The Field!!

On a hot and windy 18th July, 18 members of Ipswich Harriers and a good number of supporters descended upon St Joseph’s College, Ipswich for the Annual St Joe’s Charity Ekiden Relay organised by Ipswich Jaffa.

For those who don’t know, the Ekiden Relay is a relay race that covers the total distance of a marathon and requires 6 athletes to complete. The distances run in the relay are, 7.2k, 5k, 10k, 5k, 10k and a final 5k. The St Joe’s race takes place within the school grounds on a 2.5k circuit.

Ipswich Harriers had three teams taking part in the race and expectations were high.

The Ipswich Harriers ‘A’ team produced a fantastic performance to win the whole event by over 10 minutes and lapping the entire field at least once!! The ‘A’ team consisted of Andrew Rooke, Shaun Webb, Jack Garvin, Kieran Clements, Chris Rooke and Elliot Palmer. The ‘A’ team led from gun to tape and Andrew Rooke was their first runner covering the 7.2k leg in a time of 23m20s (fastest male of the day over 7.2k). Shaun Webb was next to run and covered his 5k in 16m11s extending the teams lead. Shaun then passed onto Jack Garvin who covered his 10k leg in 36m04s. Next up Kieran Clements sped round his 5k leg in a time of 15m54s. Chris Rooke then increased the teams’ lead by running his 10k leg in a fantastic time of 32m26s. It was clear now that the ‘A’ team would win but this didn’t stop Elliot Palmer producing the fastest 5k leg of the day, running 15m24s. The teams overall finishing time was 2h19m19s.

The Ipswich Harriers ‘B’ team ably backed up the ‘A’ team by running well to finish an impressive 6th in the men’s open category. The ‘B’ team consisted of Ross Fawcett,

Andrew Revell, Kevin Peirce, Liam Brinkley, Neil Gillingham and Dan Kett. Going off first for the ‘B’ team was Ross Fawcett covering 7.2k in 26m49s. Next up was Andrew Revell who impressed running his 5k leg in a time of 18m23s. Kevin Peirce then backed this up with a solid 38m38s over his 10k leg. Next up was Liam Brinkley who sped round the course to record 17m52s over his 5k leg. Next up Neil Gillingham ran his 10k leg in 47m08s. Dan Kett then produced a time of 19m39s over 5k to bring the team home in an overall finishing time of 2h48m29s.

The final Ipswich Harriers team taking part were the ‘D’ team who were entered in the female open category. This team had Emma Burroughs, Leanne Thorndyke, Tonya Antonis, Kirsty Thorndyke, Laura Thomas and Elizabeth Welbourn. Emma Burroughs who covered her 7.2k leg in 37m19s led off the ladies team. Leanne Thorndyke then ran her 5k leg in 25m47s and passed onto Tonya Antonis who ran very strongly to cover her 10k leg in 41m15s, which was one the fastest female performances of the day. Next up Kirsty Throndyke ran a time of 24m38s covering her 5k leg. Laura Thomas then covered her 10k leg in a time of 51m02s and finally Elizabeth Welbourn ran her 5k leg in 24m33s to bring the team home in an overall time of 3h24m34s. And the ’D’ team also finished 6th in their category.

This event proved to be very successful for Ipswich Harriers and also the organisers, Ipswich Jaffa who put on an excellent event and 85 teams took part on the day. ESSA English Schools ChampsCongratulations to all of our athletes selected to represent Suffolk at the English Schools Track and Field Championships which were held on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th of July at Birmingham Alexander Stadium. I sat glued to my tv set all afternoon on Saturday in the hope of catching a glimpse of one of our Suffolk athletes as the track finals were shown live on Sky3. First up was Charlotte Cattermole in the senior girls 100m hurdles, looking cool and composed in the blue and white of Suffolk. Charlotte ran a spirited race to finish 7th behind her training partner Georgia Atkins from Essex, who finished clear of the field in 14.22s. After watching several more races containing the cream of young English talent the finals of the junior girls 4x100m relay began. Suddenly there beaming out from the screen

were Emily and Enya two well known youngsters from Tony Taylor’s sprint group. They along with Sarah Prescott-Smith and Beth Clarke also from the Harriers had qualified for the final - not bad going as this was the only relay squad entered by Suffolk this year. I watched with pride as the girls ran a competitive race against some very fast teams from Sussex and Humberside finally finishing 6th in 50.32s. Our best results from the two days unfortunately didn’t make it to the screen. Suffolk’s only medal this year came from Matti Mortimer in the senior boys Javelin, he finished second with a throw of 60.97m to claim a silver medal. Staying with the boys Kieran Clements finished just outs ide of the medals in the Intermediate boys 3000m. In a close fought race he finished fourth in a time of 8:40.68. Our best individual

performance for the girls was in the junior long jump, Sarah Prescott-Smith finished 6th with a jump of 5.20m just ahead of her team mate Beth Clarke who jumped 4.97m to finish in ninth place.In all the Suffolk squad contained 16 Harriers athletes out of a total of 31 which is something our small town club should be very proud of. Well done all of you!Juniors: Emily Lambert(100m), Enya Moore(100m), Sarah Prescott-Smith( L J ) , B e t h C l a r k e ( L J ) , E l l i e Bloomfield(discus), Ben Hutchinson(100m), Finlay Hudson(shot).Intermediates: Charlotte Shelly(HJ), Jess Crissell(TJ), Georgina Howe(hammer), Matt Constable(400m), Ruper t Powel l (400m) , Kieran Clemants(3000m).Seniors: Charlotte Cattermole(100m hurdles), Alex Leigh-Pearson (200m), Matti Mortimer(javelin).

(report by Graeme Crissell)

National Junior League Ipswich Harriers and Chelmsford have joined together to form the Saxons, which enables both clubs to form a highly competitive team in this tough league. It is certainly the highest quality competition available to Ipswich athletes. The fourth round of the league took place at the UEA sports park in Norwich where the Saxons took a larger contingent than usual of athletes from Harriers. The highpoint was the pb obtained by Matti Mortimer in winning the Javelin with 66.98m, propelling him into the top 3 in the country at U20 level. It was doubly pleasing as he also got the athlete of the match award for this outstanding performance and it was nice to see the throwing events taking prominence over the track for a change. His throwing partner, Paul Dowding secured the B event with a throw of 49.33m thus ensuring maximum points for the team. Mortimer also threw well to finish 4th in the discus with 39.47m. Dowding also recorded a pb of 9.05m in the shot. The female throwers were led by Evie Castle and Georgina Howe. Castle came 2nd in the shot with a pb of 10.32m, she came 2nd in the hammer and 3rd in the discus and javelin. Howe got a pb of 7.39m to come 5th in her shot, a sb of 31.56m to come 3rd in the discus and she also finished a creditable 4th in the hammer .In the jumps the Chelmsford athlete, Georgia Atkins had another good performance winning the Long Jump with 5.48m with Charlotte Shelley winning the B event with 5.04m. Ellie Besford won the Pole Vault with a height of 3.25m, and came 4th in the Triple Jump with Jess Crissell coming 3rd with 10.44m. For the men, Ben Clark produced two pbs, a jump of 6.75m to finish 3rd in the Long Jump and then attained 3.65m in the pole vault. Chris Bradshaw also got a pb of 3.20m in the pole vault which enabled him to come 3rd in the B event.Georgia Atkins won the 100m hurdles with 14.4 with Evie Castle finishing 2nd in the B race. Nathan Greenaway got a sb of 11.3 in the 100m with Adam Rawling also getting a sb of 24.8 in the 200m. Tim Byford recorded a sb of 4.38 in the 1500m with his club colleague Andrew Revell obtaining two pbs, 9.46 in the 3000m and 7.18 in the 2000m steeplechase. Emma Burroughs also got a pb of 6.20 in the women’s 1500m steeplechase. Ross Fawcett then ran a pb of 9.50 in the 3000m. Katie-Ann Tuttlebury recorded 4.59.9 coming 3rd in the 1500m with Katie Swift getting a pb of 64.0 in the 400m. Finally, there were two fine performances in the 400 metres hurdles where Hayley Maclean came 2nd in the A race with Georgia Green-Muid getting a pb of 69.4. (report by G. Crissell)
