Championship ReportsAnglian Schools Championships

This years Anglian Schools Championships were held at the UEA Track in Norwich. In the absence of the Suffolk Schools meeting Stephen Benson did a good job of selecting the team from schools cup meetings, school recommendations and club athletics including several from the Harriers. On a day more suited to water polo our athletes performed well against stiff competition from Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire in a bid for victory and qualification for the English Schools Championships at the beginning of July.

In the Junior (U15) Section of the event the best of our young athletes proved their selection with wins coming from Sarah Prescott-Frost in the Long Jump with 4.98m, Kasey Hagan in the Pole vault with a new pb of 2.60m and Helena Coe with a pb of 10.70m in the shot putt. Other good performances in this age group came from George Johnson 3rd in the 100m in 12.1, Liam Manser 2nd in the 200m in 24.6 and Rachel Ryan 3rd in the 800m in 2:27.3. Oliver Pescott-Frost threw 30.97m to come 3rd in the Hammer and Kasey Hagan finished 4th in his second event of the day High Jump with 1.55m.

Another strong team of Harriers athletes contested places in the intermediate (U17) Section although there were no wins there were several notable performances including in the sprints, Tom Powell’s 2nd place finish in 100m and 3rd in the 200m which was mirrored by Emily Lambert in the girls races. Enya Moore came home 4th in the 200m and Keeley Whitlock ran a pb of 44.1 to finish 3rd in the 300m. In the middle distances Lucy Barnes completed a tough schedule with 4th in the 800m and 2nd in the 1500m, whilst for the boys Andrew Revell came home 3rd in the 1500m and Tobias Rankin gained a pb of 2:11.6 in the 800m finishing 5th. Other tremendous performances came from Charlotte Shelley 3rd in the Long Jump with 5.02m, Emily Robinson 3rd in the 300m hurdles and Errol Thompson who pushed his pb to 1.80m in placing 3rd in the high Jump. The Intermediate throwers also had a good day with both Finlay Hudson and Alice Roberts coming 3rd in the Javelin.

Finally the results from our senior (U20) athletes topped off a great day for Suffolk and the Harriers with victories for Georgina Howe in both the Discus (32.86m) and the Hammer (41.80m) and James Powey in the 3000m.

ESSA English Schools Championships

Following on from the Anglian Schools Competition those athletes who achieved a National Standard were invited by Suffolk Schools Team Manager Stephen Benson to attend the English Schools Track and Field Championships, the pinnacle of any young English Athletes home career and a stepping stone to performing on the international scene for their country. The Competition this year was held at the famous Gateshead Stadium on the first weekend of July. With highlights and live track finals once again being shown on Sky 3 I sat glued to my tv set all afternoon in the hope of seeing one of our Harriers athletes. Unfortunately not a glimpse of the blue and white of Suffolk came my way, as I none the less watched a thoroughly

entertaining afternoon of athletics! This wasn’t to say we didn’t compete, I guess our athletes are just a little camera shy!

The best result over the two days came from the multi-talented Sarah Prescott-Smith in the Junior Girls Long Jump she gained a bronze medal for finishing 3rd with a jump of 5.50m a new personal best. Other notable performances in Gateshead came from Charlotte Shelley who in her new discipline the Triple Jump finished a fantastic 4th in the intermediate ladies event with a jump of 11.32m also a new pb. It was a weekend of pbs as Marshall Childs a member of our impressive throws group continued the success finishing 4th in the Junior boys Javelin with an incredible throw of 46.01m in just his first season of competition. In all the Suffolk squad contained 13

Harriers athletes. Congratulations must go to all of those who represented their county at this prestigious national competion, some great performances were achieved over the weekend and I’m sure you all gained something from such a highly competitive experience!

Juniors: Sarah Prescott-Smith (LJ), George Johnson (100m), Ellie Bloomfield (Discus), Liam Manser (LJ), Oliver Pescott-Frost (Hammer), Marshall Childs (Jav), Helena Coe (Shot).

Intermediates: Charlotte Shelly (TJ), Finlay Hudson (Jav), Tom Powell (100m), Andrew Revell (1500m)

East Anglian League

The Harriers travelled to Colchester for the final East Anglian League meeting and for the second week running we put in some terrific performances to qualify for another final, this time taking place at Bury on September 18th. Special mention has to be made of the throwing team who once again turned in a near spotless performance with several enhancing their standing with each event.

Jamie Crocker got the u13 boys off to a great start with a pb of 3.98m in the long jump and finishing 2nd in the 100m before unfortunately pulling up with a calf strain. His sprint partner Jake Greenleaf won the B 100m and came 3rd in the 200m. Louis Breyer enhanced his pb to 2.33 in the 800m and then won the B 200m. Josh Richards came 4th in his 800m, 2nd in the shot but achieved a pb of 15.67m in the discus while Max Hudson won the shot and Javelin with a pb of 29.43m.

Lermae Youngs and Chloe Godbold worked in tandem for the sprints and Long jump for the u13 girls. Youngs came 2nd in the 100m and won the 200m while Godbold won the B 100m and finished 2nd in the 200m and long jump. Ella Hughes set a new pb of 2.43 in winning the 800m with Freya Emerick winning the High jump with a pb of 1.20m. Daisy Tucker won her discus with debutant Alice Woollatt getting 3rd in the shot.

The u15 boys announced their arrival with double wins in the 100m and 200m from George Johnson with Liam Manser winning the B 100m and Jason King the B 200m. Manser also won the long jump with a pb of 5.40m. Richard Ling won the B long jump then came 3rd in the 1500m. Theo Passmore came a close 2nd in the 800m with 2.22 and 3rd in the javelin. Connor Elles, in only his second event, was joint 1st in the High Jump with 1.40m, got a pb of 10.46m in his first triple jump and won the shot with 9.19m. Marshall Childs won the A event and the javelin with a pb of 49.50m. Jason Strauss came 2nd in the hammer with a pb of 16.01m.

The u15 girls again had a large number but struggled to make headway in the sprints. Chantelle Kilpatrick came 3rd in the 100m but won the B long jump. Chloe Stopher came 3rd in the A 100m and 200m with Georgia Kemp showing promise by getting 2nd place in the 200m. Rachel Ryan had a terrific day, coming 2nd in the long jump and 800m but setting a new pb in the 300m with an excellent 45.8. Christina Day came 2nd in high jump with a pb of 1.35m. Nadia Jolly won the javelin with a pb of 11.97m. Helena Coe won the shot and discus and won points in the High jump showing her competitive spirit. Ellie Bloomfield won the hammer with an enormous throw of 41.25m catapulting her into the top 10 in the country and then followed up with 31.27m in the discus to put her up to 15th in the rankings.

The U17 boys were very strong in the middle distances with Toby Rankin winning the 800m in 2.09 and the 1500m in 4.29. Connor Whiting came a close 2nd in the 800m but won the B 1500m in 4.40. Andy Revell and Ross Tenant ran as guests in the 800m and both enhanced their pbs to 2.02 and 2.07 respectively. Tom Powell came 2nd in the 100m and 200m but won the B high jump. Errol Thompson won his sprint before winning the A High jump and B triple Jump. Seb Lupton won the Long jump and finished the 400m with a pb of 56.1. Ben Fawcett won the hurdles and the triple jump with a pb of 11.82m. Theo Moore got two pbs in the hammer and shot (34.37m & 9.19m). Paul Roberts increased his pb to 45.74m in winning the javelin and the shot in 10.81m.

The U17 and senior women were again triumphant in the 100m and 200m with Enya Moore and Emily Lambert victorious in their races. Alex Leigh-Pearson came 3rd in the 400m with Brogan Mortimer winning the B race. Lucy Barnes had a terrific victory in the 800m winning against her rival from Colchester in a pb of 2.23.1. Beth Clarke did well finishing 4th in strong A long jump whilst Jess Crissell won the B jump before winning the A triple jump. Alice Robinson had a complete set of victories in the discus, shot and javelin. Georgina Howe got a new pb of 45.93m in winning the hammer, she also won the discus. Kerry Fuller was another versatile athlete who won the hurdles and the shot.

The senior men saw some new pbs being set by what can be termed as the really senior members. Nigel Hayman and Lee Bowker both recorded pbs in the 100m which Rob Graham won in a pb of 11.6. Graham also won the Long and Triple jumps. Hayman also won the High jump and his hurdles with Jeremy Smith winning the B event. Keiran Williams won the triple jump and came 2nd in the 200m. Ross Fawcett after cycling 40k, still managed to win the B 800m in which Dan Green got 2nd in the A race. Joe Bloomfield won the hammer, discus and the shot with a sb of 13.74m in which his father, Craig came 2nd in the B event. Rory McMillan won the B discus.

News Extra Sponsors Needed

Don’t forget theres still time to sponsor Chris Rooke one of our top mens distance runners who will be running the Larkin Gowan 1/2 marathon again this year. He has decided to use the event to raise money for St. Elizabeths Hospice and Mencap in memory of his late aunt who passed away last year. It would be great if Chris could get as many sponsors as possible to raise money for these two very worthwhile charities. His sponsorship form is available in the clubhouse for your pledges. If you fancy the challenge yourself you can register to compete online until 18th September with registration for the family 4k fun run being open until the event takes place on the 25th September. Both races start and finish at Northgate Sports Centre.

WinningVeteran

Malcolm Fenton has been in winning form again this summer. The Veteran Ipswich Harriers thrower competed in the BMAF Championships in Birmingham where he won the mens V55 Hammer (6kg) by nearly 10m from the second placed athlete with an immense throw of 51.13m. He also won the Weight Throw by over 3m from his nearest rival with a distance of 17.82m, which was a seasons best. Malcolm also competed in July at the Eastern Veteran Champs held at Kings Lynn again winning the 6k Hammer with a throw of 47.13m.

Suffolk Uniform

I have been asked by the Suffolk women’s Team Manager to put out a plea to all athletes who have competed for Suffolk over the last couple of years. Could you please check through your wardrobes and drawers, as her numbers of maroon Suffolk vests have been dwindling! If you find you have taken one away with you by mistake you can bring it to the clubhouse on a training night and we will return it for you.

Club Trophies

A message from your Supporters Committee - Please could all of the lucky trophy winners from last year, who still have their trophies on the mantlepiece, hand them to Colleen in the clubhouse as soon as possible. So that we can repair/clean/engrave them ready for this years worthy recipients. Thank you.

Grand Prix Appearance

If you ask most young athletes their ultimate dream I’m sure many would say appearing in a world class Grand Prix meeting along side their athletic heroes. Well Kieran Clements has done just that, he was invited to compete in a special 3K event for Britain’s up and coming young talent at the AVIA London Grand Prix, an event which included the likes of Mo Farah, Phillips Idowu and many other top stars of the sport. Kieran aquitted himself well finishing in 11th place in a time of 8:30.92. Hopefully it was the first of many top class appearances for this talented Harrier!

England Athletics U15/U17 ChampsSome of our most talented youngsters were in action recently at the England Athletics U15/U17 Outdoor Championships a competition for the country’s elite young stars. Sarah Prescott-Smith continued a successful season with a terrific series in the U15 Long Jump, eventually finishing in fourth place with a jump of 5.45m. Others who performed well on the day were Charlotte Shelley who jumped to an 8th place finish with 5.03m in the U17 Long Jump, Ellie Bloomfield who threw 39.09m to come 10th in the U15 Hammer and Andrew Revell who came home in 4:17.64 in his heat of the mens U17 1500m. Well Done to all of you!

Harriers Presentation EveningThe presentation Evening will be held once again this year at the Manor Ballroom on Saturday 19th of November. Those of you who attended last years event will know what a great time was had by all, with our special guest Christian Malcolm handing out the trophies. National Junior LeagueThe final round of the National Junior League took place at Norman Park, Bromley for the Suffolk and Essex Saxons. There was still a possibility that we may have had to enter the play-off promotional match (the team finishing in 7th position competes to remain in the premier league) but that was dismissed after the first few events in the Field. The Ipswich athletes really shone, none more so than Matti Mortimore who deservedly won the male Athlete of the Match award for his outstanding throw in the javelin and his professional attitude. The female athlete of the match, Sam Milner (Blackheath and Bromley) trains with our throwing team at Northgate. The final league table resulted in 5th place for the Saxons, the highest we have ever achieved, with Norwich relegated and Woodford Green in the play off position.

The male throwers come from Ipswich and they have been magnificent as a team and individually throughout the season. Matti Mortimore won the Javelin with a throw of 66.97m with Paul Dowding not far behind winning the B event in 57.08m. Mortimore also did well in the shot and discus in which Paul Roberts ably supported him in the B events. Theo Moore got 24.68m in the A Hammer with Dowding recording 23.57 in his only throw. Roberts also recorded a pb of over 43m as a guest in the Javelin out performing many of the other teams athletes.

There was almost a double victory for us in the Pole Vault from Liam Yarwood and Rob Wood but a magnificent 4.40m from the Blackheath vaulter prevented that. Chris Bradshaw put in another good all round display, 2nd in the Triple Jump, 3rd in the 110m hurdles, 3rd in the B High Jump before being part of the 4x100 relay team that finished 5th. The others, Nathan Greenaway, Mitchell Etheridge and George Perkins all did remarkably well in the sprints against some really tough opposition. Chris Youell got a pb of 1:57 finishing 5th in the 800m before the Ipswich trio of Andrew Revell, Bradley Wattleworth and Ross Tennant ran a really good race as a team in the 3000m before all 4 participated in the 4x400 relay.

The female throwers have also been fantastic all season. Chelsea Coker, Evie Castle and Georgina Howe again produced terrific performances. Coker and Howe won the A and B hammer with throws of 48.09m and 44.17m respectively. Both also finished 2nd in their discus. Castle came 5th in the javelin and 3rd in the hurdles with Jessica Crissell making only her second ever javelin throw came 6th in the B event. Crissell and Beth Clarke gained good points in the Triple Jump and also supported Hayley Maclean winning the Long Jump. Poppy Lake won the High Jump with 1.70m as her team mate Jade Harding came 2nd in the B event.

The Chelmsford athletes then really helped out the team in the sprints and middle distance but the two best runs came from Ipswich girls. First of all Alex Leigh-Pearson pulled out all the stops to get 4th in a hotly contested 100m. Emma Burroughs was forced out of the 3000m after feeling ill, but then showed great spirit and determination by coming back and recording a pb of 6.26 in the 1500m steeplechase.

Under 13 inter-counties at Kingston (Report by Mandy Godbold)

Eleven athletes from Ipswich Harriers made the long trip to Kingston to represent Suffolk in the Under 13 Inter-county event. Everyone rose to the challenge and put in great performances against tough opposition in extremely hot weather conditions. In total five personal bests were set.

Boys results - Christopher Jones came 10th in high jump and also 10th in the 800m race setting a new pb of 2:31.60. Jamie Crocker came 5th in the B 100m and 4th in the A 200m. Jake Greenleaf came 7th in the B 200m. Henry Milldown came 12th in the A 1500m race setting a new pb of 5:06.21 and 11th in the B Long Jump. Joshua Richards put in two great performances setting pbs in both throwing events. Joshua came 9th in the B shot with 6.51m and 12th in the A discus with 15.20m.

Girls Results - Chloe Godbold came 6th in the A 100m and 5th in the 800m. Lauren Grubb came 6th in the A 200m and 8th in the High Jump. Miri Budd came 5th in the A 70m Hurdles and 6th in the B Long Jump. Lermae Youngs came 11th in the A Long Jump. Maddison Clarke put in a fine performance setting a new pb in the A discus of 11.32m finishing in 13th place, she also came 8th in the 100m. Eastern Young Athletes LeagueIpswich Harriers travelled to Thurrock for the final leg of the Eastern Young Athletes league hoping to qualify for the plate final being held at Northgate on 11th September. In the end they beat two very strong sides in Enfield and Bedford to record 2nd close behind the local winners, Basildon. We now qualify for the plate final to be held at Northgate on Sunday 11th September.

The U13 boys team have really pulled together this season and punched above their weight. Chris Jones pulled off another pb in winning the 800m with 2.27 after he had already secured points in the hurdles and high jump. Bradley Tovell came 4th in the 800m with 2.46 and 3rd in the hurdles. Jamie Crocker enhanced his pb in the 200m to 28.5 after coming 4th in the 100m and the long jump. His sprint partner Jake Greenleaf came 2nd in his 200m with 30.3. The throwing team of Max Hudson and Josh Richards had a double win in the shot with Richards getting a pb of 6.65m, and then both came 3rd in their discus event.

The U13 girls struggled for numbers but the quartet who did go, Ellie Gooderham, Ella Hughes, Lermae Youngs and Chloe Godbold pulled off a great win in the relay race with a very good time of 58.8. Youngs and Godbold held their own in the 100m and 200m against sprinters from the London teams and gained good points in the Long Jump. Hughes achieved 2.43 in the 800m while Gooderham got 2.51 in the same race.

The sprint duo of Liam Manser and George Johnson shared the honours in the sprints as the U15 boys racked up the points. Manser won the A 100m and B Long Jump with Johnson winning the A Long Jump and B 100m. Connor Elles made a very good debut for Harriers by picking up good points in the discus with a throw of 16.67m before getting 1.50m in the High Jump. Theo Passmore came 2nd in the 800m with James Bemrose just behind in a pb of 2.25. Passmore and Bemrose did very well in their throws, in particular Passmore who threw over 22m in the javelin. Another debutant was George Williams who came 2nd in the B 1500m with 5.17 with Richard Ling getting 2nd in the A with 5.04.

Despite taking a large number of girls, the U15 missed out on several events and the points total suffered as a result. The throwers, Helena Coe, winning the B discus and shot, and Ellie Bloomfield who won the A discus and Hammer really saved the day. Sarah Prescott-Smith was again the pick of the track athletes, winning both high and long jump as well as getting 2nd place in the hurdles. Chantelle Kilpatrick won the B long jump with 4.24m. Sophie Godbold picked up 3rd in the pole vault while Jasmine Mallet got points in the javelin and 800m. Rachel Ryan came 2nd in the 800m before getting a pb of 47.3 in the 300m where Gabby Hartfield made her debut with 51.3.

In contrast, the U17 men piled up the points. Theo Moore came 2nd in hammer with 33.05m and won the B discus. His throwing partner Paul Roberts won the javelin with a throw over 41 metres and came 2nd in discus with 33.84m. Tobias Rankin won an absorbing 1500m against a string of runners from Bedford with Connor Whiting getting 2nd in the B. Errol Thompson won the B triple jump and came 2nd in A High Jump, as Ben Fawcett was his usual versatile self by getting 2nd in triple with 11.25m and gaining points in hurdles and long jump. Tom Powell performed well in the sprints against tough opposition and won the B High Jump. Toby Upson performed bravely for the team by putting in some good performances in the 800m and javelin and despite an injury.

The U17 female team recorded a string of victories. Lucy Barnes pulled off a 800m and 1500m double win as well as 2nd in the discus. Emily Robinson won the B 800m as her sister Alice got a pb in winning both discus and javelin. Enya Moore stormed home in the 200m in 27.1 with Emily Lambert winning the B race. Keeley Whitlock won the B 100m as Jess Crissell came 2nd in the Triple jump and 3rd in the B 300m before being part of the relay team with Moore, Lambert and Whitlock that had a great win in 53.2.

East Anglian League (Trophy Alert!!!)

Ipswich Harriers have retained the overall league trophy again this year, winning in style over 400 points clear of our nearest rivals Cambridge. Ahead of our finals appearance at Bury on the 18th of this month here is an update on how our individual teams faired in the league this season. Both under 13 teams improved tremendously this year after the disappointment of failing to qualify for the finals last year. The girls qualified in 6th place and the boys in 4th. The Under 15 Teams also did really well against tough opposition the girls finishing a close 2nd behind

Peterborough and the boys 3rd behind West Suffolk and Cambridge. Our three older teams had an amazing time in the league this year the U17 Men winning a tough battle to finish top ahead of Luton. The U17/Senior womens team also competed strongly this year and were rewarded with a league win ahead of West Suffolk in second and finally our ever talented mens team managed to reclaim their title from last year ahead of Cambridge in second and Luton third. So a haul of four trophies await collection at the finals - lets see if we can add to them on the day! GOOD LUCK to all of those selected to compete and make sure you stay around to collect the team trophy - I want lots of pictures!!!
