IRRAWANG PUBLIC SCHOOL School Newsletter An Innovative, Vibrant and Diverse Learning Community Issue 5 – Term 3 – Week 10 19 April 2022 SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY LEARNING RESPECT Principal’s Message Another term comes to an end. Congratulations to all our students for their terrific efforts this term. They give us many reasons to be proud. Congratulations to Sarah Hamilton in Year 6. She has successfully auditioned for the Newcastle Jets dance squad, who perform at each home game. It is great to see our children shining out of school as well as in school. Sarah is a delightful student, and a real quiet achiever. I look forward to seeing Sarah when I attend Jets games during the year. During the year we have had a number of our Year 6 students apply for places in Extension classes at Irrawang and Hunter River High Schools for 2013. Congratulations to Phebe Farrawell, Jasmine McDonnell, Chelsea Florian and Bryce Lampard for their success. This week NAPLAN results for Year 3 and 5 students will go home to parents. We are very proud of the way our children approached the tests, and we know most of them have done their best. If parents want to discuss results with teachers, please make an appointment next term. I will also organise an information session on understanding NAPLAN results for early next term. This year our school averages improved in all aspects for both Years 3 and 5. We had excellent student growth for Year 5 students in Numeracy and Grammar and Punctuation. We saw more students achieving higher bands in several aspects compared to 2011. We were also happy to see most students who we knew were capable of achieving the top bands doing so. We were able to achieve school targets in most areas, which was an excellent effort. On Thursday our Stage 2 students went on a big day out to Taronga Zoo. It was a long but exciting day for them, and as ever our Irrawang students made us proud. Thanks to the staff who organised and attended the excursion. Our K-2 classes also had a fantastic outing for lunch at the park on Thursday. It was a day that was enjoyed by all. Again, thanks to staff for their organisation. During the last two terms we have had a Homework Centre operating with the assistance of the Smith Family. This has proved to be a great success and we will be continuing next year. Principal’s Message

Another term comes to an end. Congratulations to all our students for their terrific efforts this term. They give us many reasons to be proud.Congratulations to Sarah Hamilton in Year 6. She has successfully auditioned for the Newcastle Jets dance squad, who perform at each home game. It is great to see our children shining out of school as well as in school. Thanks to the staff who organised and attended the excursion. Our K-2 classes also had a fantastic outing for lunch at the park on Thursday. It was a day that was enjoyed by all. Again, thanks to staff for their organisation.During the last two terms we have had a Homework Centre operating with the assistance of the Smith Family. This has proved to be a great success and we will be continuing next year. A big thank you to Ms Boyd for her excellent organisation, and to all of our tutors. This week I have had the great pleasure of meeting with our 2013 Kinders and their parents. It looks like a terrific group, most of whom can hardly wait to start school. Kinder Orientation will begin on October 17 next term.During Term 4, we have had Mrs Alison John working as an Intern on RH 16. Mrs John has proved to be an outstanding trainee teacher, and I would like to congratulate her on an excellent term with the class. She has made a great contribution to our school, and is bound to have a very successful teaching career.Something sad to end our term is the fact that Lea Hodge, who has been our Canteen supervisor for many many years, is leaving us for a new fulltime job. Lea has brought great skill and commitment to her role over many years, and it will be very strange not to find her busy in our canteen any more. In 2010 Lea was recognised for her work in our school with a Regional Education Week award. We thank Lea for playing her part in our school so well for so many years, and wish her all the very best for the future.I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday, and look forward to seeing everyone on Monday October 8 for the start of Term 4.

SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY PROGRAMOur school is part of the National School Chaplaincy Program. This program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations under the National School Chaplaincy Program. Our Chaplain is Brenton Pobjie. The School Chaplain assists school staff and school counsellors in the delivery of support to students and their families, in a variety of ways. Brenton is at the school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and can be contacted through the school.

ATTENTION PARENTSChildren are not to be at school before

8.30am as there is no teacher on duty to supervise the safety of your child

SWIMMING SCHEME Reminder to parents Arrangements have been made to include a Learn to Swim Program in our school curriculum. Unfortunately the cost of the program has increased this year as we have to cover some of the travel expenses to and from the school. The cost will be $45.00 for a 10 day program, Pool entry and bus travel to and from the pool. The school has helped with the cost of the bus to keep the cost as low as possible.

The Department of Education and Training School Swimming Scheme is an intensive learn to swim program, which develops water confidence and

provides students with basic skills in water safety and survival. The Scheme is conducted over ten days. Each daily lesson is 45 minutes.Students who have not reached a satisfactory standard of water safety and survival skills, and are unable to swim 25m confidently unaided in deep water, are eligible to participate in the School Swimming Scheme. The Scheme focuses on all weak swimmers from Year 2 to 6, as well as students with special needs such as new arrivals in Australia and students with disabilities.

Instruction will take place at Lakeside Swimming Pool, Raymond Terrace. The scheme will continue daily for two weeks from 29th October, 2012 to 11th

November, 2012 for instruction.

2012 - 7 a-side SOCCER COMPETITIONSTAGE 2 & 3 7-a-side Soccer Competition

During Term 2 and Term 3 at I.P.S. another terrific 7-a-side soccer competition was held. 8 teams nominated and competed in this annual school event. The games were held every lunch (when the weather permitted), and the team captains, really led by example.Participation, good sportsmanship and co-operation were evident from the very beginning of the first game. It t needs to be noted that the student skill level really improved as the competition progressed.

LIBRARY NEWS

What a fabulous term, full of great happenings and lots of reading!

Thank you for the tremendous support shown during Book Week. The costumes were wonderful and the morning teas looked fun. Due to the great response to the Fair, the Library will benefit with resources to update our collection.

I am also pleased to report that the Premier’s Reading Challenge results were again outstanding for our school this year. 94% of our students achieved their Challenge level. This is a fantastic result. Well done everyone! Your certificates will be available during term 4. I’m sure there will be a number of students receiving gold awards too, having successfully achieved their Challenge over four years.

Enjoy the holidays everyone. Stay safe and happy reading!
