FOREWORD

This IndianStandard ( Part I ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Artificial Limbs, Rehabilitation Appliances and Equipment for the Disabled Sectional Committee had been approved by the Medical Equipment and Hospital Planning Division Council.

This standard ( Part 1 ) is one of a series establishing a vocabulary of terms used in the field of external limb prosthetics and external orthotics. It defines general terms used to describe external limb prostheses and orthoses. The other parts in this series are:

Part 2 Terms relating to external limb prostheses and wearers of these prostheses, and

Part 3 Terms relating to external orthoses.

In the preparation of this standard, assistance has been derived from IS0 8549 - 1 : 1989 ‘Prosthetics and orthotics - Vocabulary - Part 1 : General terms for external limb prostheses and external orthoses’, issued by the International Organization for Standardization ( IS0 ).

PART 1 GENERAL TERMS FOR EXTERNAL LIMB PRQSTHESES AND EXTERNAL ORTHOSES

1 SCOPE

1.1 This standard ( Part 1 ) establishes a vocabulary of general terms used in the field of external -limb prosthetics and external orthotics, the anatomy of those parts of the human body most commonly fitted with these prostheses and orthoses, and the personnel and procedures involved in the practice of prosthetics and orthotics.

1.2 It does not apply to breast or other external prostheses used to replace other parts of the human body, to dental prostheses or orthoses, nor to internal prostheses and orthoses. Nor does it apply to orthoses that only encompass limb segments ( that is, orthoscs used in fracture treat- ment and sports medicine 1.

NOTES

1 For the purpose of this standard, the abbreviated term ‘prosthetics’ and its derivatives only apply to external limb prosthetics and the abbreviated term ‘orthotics’ and its derivatives only apply to external orthotics.

2 The terms printed in quotation marks are defimd elsewhere in this part( Part 1 ) of the standard.

2 TERMINOLOGY

2.1 Prostheses and Orthoses

2.1.1 Prosthesis; Prosthetic Device

Externally applied device used to replace wholly, or in part, an absent or deficient limb segment.

2.1.2 Orthosis; Orthotic Device

Externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuro-muscular and skeletal systems.

2.1.3 Prosthetics

Science and art involved in the preparation of ‘prosthetic devices’.

2.1.4 Orthotics

Science and art involved in the preparation of ‘orthotic devices’.

2.1.5 Upper Limb Orthosis

‘Orthosis’ applied to the whole or part of the ‘upper limb’.

2.1.6 Lower Limb Orthosis

‘Orthosis’ applied to the whole or part of the ‘lower limb’.

2.1.7 Upper Limb Prosthesis

‘Prosthesis’ used to replace the whole or part of the ‘upper limb’.

2.1.8 Lower Limb Prosthesis

‘Prosthesis’ used to replace the whole or part of the ‘lower limb’.

2.1.9 Spinal Orthosis

‘Orthosis’ applied to all or part of the ‘trunk’, ‘head’ and ‘neck’, and their intermediate joints.

2.2 Anatomical Terms

2.2.1 Lower Limb

That part of the body comprising the ‘foot’, the leg, the thigh, the pelvic girdle and the intermediate joints.

2.2.2 Hip Joint

Ball and socket joint between the head of the femur and the acetabulum in the OS coxae.

2.2.3 Knee Joint

Joint between the femur and the tibia, including the joint between the femur and the patella.

2.2.4 Ankle ~Joint

Joint between the tibia, the fibula and the talus.

2.2.5 Foot

That part of the lower limb distal to the ankle.

2.2.6 Upper Limb

That part of the body comprising the ‘hand’, the forearm, the upper arm, the shoulder girdle and the intermediate joints.

2.2.7 Shoulder

That part of the body comprising the thorace- scapular joint, the humero-scapular joint and the upper part of the arm.

Manufacturing processes performed after ‘dynamic alignment’ in order to produce the ‘prosthesis’ or ‘orthosis’ in its final state.

2.3.16 Check-Out

Process of verifying that the finished condition of the ‘prothesis’ or ‘orthosis’ ( including fit, function and appearance ) is satisfactory.
