0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institutionon 29 August 1980, after the draft finalized by the Lifting Chains,Associated Fittings and Components Sectional Committee had beenapproved by the Marine, Cargo Movement and Packaging DivisionCouncil.

0.2 This standard covers the chain assembly used on pneumatic tyres ofvehicles as non-skid chains. These chains are used to obtain a sure andsafe grip on such slippery surfaces as snow, mud, ice, sand and grass.

0.3 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS : 2-1960·. The number of significant places retainedin the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specifiedvalue in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes the manufacture, standard sizes, dimensions,methods of testing, packing and preservation of non-skid chains.

2. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

2.1 The chain shall consist of two straight link side chains, twisted linkcross chains, end hooks or lock fasteners or catch and latch, all properlyassembled and ready to put on tyre. The cross chains shall be attachedto the side chains by means of connecting links.

2.2 The catch and latch/end hook /lock fasteners shall be capable ofreadily being opened and closed and sh all be safe against accidentalopening or detachment.

2.3 T he assembly end hook and connecting link shall be made in such amanner that it shall not cause rubbing or damage of any type to tyre,

2.4 The twisted links shall not extend by opening or flattening whilerunn ing th e vehicle with chains under full load conditions.

2.5 Twisting of the links shall be done in such a manner which ensuresequal angle of twist on the link s.

2.6 The overall dimensions and end fittings shall be governed by T able 1.

3. COMPONENTS

3.1 The size and type of the straight and cro ss links, nu mber of link s ineach section, spacing, number of cross links and type of end connector forvarious sizes shall be as shown in Fig. I to 8.

3.2 Side Chains - The chain sha ll be electrica llv butt welded and sha llconform to IS: 3109 (Part 1 )-1970* re garding material and heattreatment. The dimensions and load shall be as given in T able 2.

3.3 Cross Chains - Cross ch ains sh all be twi sted link chains conformingto IS: 6217-1971 t reg arding material. Dimensions and load shall be asgiven in Table 3.

3.4 All chains shall be electrically resistance butt welded so as to form acontinuous loop. The welded joint shall be free from cold shuts , sla g andother defects.

3.5 The cross chains shall be connected to the side ch ains bv means of'connecting link' who se design shall provide easy replacement 'of brokenfworn cross chains.

3.6 Catch and Latch/Lock Fasteners - These shall be made outof hot rolled carbon steel sheet and str ip with ten sile strength:i0 - 60 kgf!mm'! conform ing to IS: 1079-1973:. .

4. TOLERANCES

4.1 Tolerances shall be as follows.

4.1.1 Material Diameter - Tolerance for material d iameter up to 16 mmshall be ·:· 2, -6 percent as per IS : 6217- 197 1+.

6. WORKMANSIUP AND FINISH

6.2 The side chains and cros s r hnins shall hI' polished. All cha insincluding hooks and fasteners shall have ru st resisting finish to protectthem in storage and in uansit prior to use.

7. TESTING AND INSPECTION

7.1 Liak Plain ( Side Chain) - The chain sha ll be inspected and testedfor loads in the final stage before assembly. 100 percent chains sha ll heproof te-sted and selecte-d samples as per 7.2 of IS: {;~ l i - 1 9i l * shall berested for break load ,

7.2 Link Twisted ( Cross Chain) - Proof load test and break ing loadtest and m aterial analysis for t wisted chain shall be carried ou t beforethe cha ins a re cas e carburised and twi sted.

7.2.1 The follow ing sequen ce sha ll he followe d :

a ) Proo f load test sha ll be ca r r ied out on 100 pe rcent unhardenedcha in before a ssem b ly;

b ) The breaking load test shall be carried out on the selectedsa m ples as ppr 7.2 of IS : 6:ll7-l 971* from the unhardenedchain but the test samples shall have to be hardened andte n .percd to vnsure m aximum breaking load ; a nd

c) ~[at Pri al a na lysis sha ll be carr ied out on lite samples desn ovedin testing for break ing load.

7.3 All th e bas ic cha ins sh all be proof rested to 50 perrent of ih e breakingload before CUll ing an d ass em bly.

7.4 Provision for Inspection - The in spector sha ll h ave access to theworks of th e manufact urer at all rea sonable t im es for the purpose ofwitnessing th e specified test s and inspect ing the testing m achine and themethod of ex amination. The manufacturer shall provide the inspector, atI he time of inspection, with copies of the test sheets giving the results ofa ll th e test s made in his pre spn n ' .

7.4.1 The manufacturer sh a ll supply the samples requ ired for testingfree of charge and at his own cost, supply labour and appl iances for suchtesting as m ay be carried out in his prem ises in acco rd ance with th isstandard. In the a bsence of facilities at his own works for making thespecified tests, the manufacturer s ha ll bear the cost of carrying out suchtests e lsew here. The purchaser, if he 50 wi shes, may delegate th e chainmanufactu rer to in spect th e ch a in for h im .

7.5 Test Certificate - The rnanufacruror sha ll supply a ce rtifica te of{est and examination in accordance with 9.2 of IS: 5616-1970+.

7.6 The length of th e side ch ain shall be determined bv h;m~ing the sidech ain vertically on a pin or o n a j ig . 7.7 The length of the cross chain shall be measured similarly by hangingthe cros s cha in vertically.

7.8 Hardness - Hardness test as sp ecified in IS: 150I-I 968* shall bemade on the outside surface of the link on the side of the link opposite toweld.

7.9 Case Depth - The case depth shall be determined by etching. Thespecimen shall consist of a link prepared by grinding with a suita bleabrasive wheel, a cross section perpendicular to the axis of chainm aterial. It is then etched, in a solution of nitric acid and water (I : Iby volume) of specific gravity 1'217, for approximately 6 seconds. Thistreatment reveals the case as a dark ring. Width of this ring shall beconsidered as the case depth. Case depth shall be measured microscopi­cally at 20 X magnifications and sha ll conform to 5.1.

7.9.1 Case depth shall be tested on five test samples per lot and allsha ll pass the test requirements. If two or more samples fail, the test shallbe repeated on five more samples. If one sample fails in the retest, thelot shall be rejected for rectification.

8. MARKING·

8.1 The following shall be marked by stamping or engraving on the lockfastener or at any other suitable place readily visib le:

a) Manufacturer's namejidentityfmonogram ;

h:, Month and year of manufacture; and

c) Part designations (Part No . in case of defence requirements).

8.1.1 Each chain may also be marked with the lSI Certification Mark.

9. SAMPLING

9.1 Side Chains and Attachments - The samples for inspection shallconsist of I percent of ea ch lot of 200 pairs or less of side chains andattachments.

9.2 Cross Chains - Samples for inspection and testing shall consist ofI percent, but not less than 5 cross chains of the cross chains in each lot, tobe selected at the discretion of the inspecting officer from the least numberof cross ch ains. The lot will be accepted when all samples meet therequirements of hardness and case depth of the cross chains , and thematerial ana lysis. In the event that any samples fail to meet thespecification, a resample of 2 percent of the chains in each lot shall beselected at the discretion of the inspecting officer. The lot will be acceptedwhen all of the resarnples meet the specification.

10. PACKING AND PRESERVATION

10.1 The chains shall be polished and oil preserved. The catch andlatch/lock fastener shall be preserved with grease L No.3 conforming toIS: 507-1970*.

10.2 Chains shall be packed as agreed to between the manufacturer andthe purch aser.
