Apart from the joy of it all, the end-of-term class parties are meant to be a learning experience even if it means squeezing a few drops of lemon on to a chaat. The children work together as a team and enjoy the fruits of their own labour. They also learn that street-corner snacks can be made at home or at school hygienically.

Nursery 2 had a Chatpata Churmur Party. The children helped to crush the phuchkas into small pieces. This was a topping for boiled potatoes and chopped onions. The mixture was garnished with coriander leaves, a squeeze of lemon, and a sprinkling of chaat masala to add zing. The children could not have enough of it!

The Preparatory did a delicious Aloo Jhuri Chaat. Out came the boiled potatoes cut into neat cubes, bhujiyas, papri, and chopped coriander leaves. This was put into a large vessel and mixed by the children and their teachers. The teachers then finished the chaat with beaten curd, chopped onion, and chaat masala. The sound of merry chomping declared the Aloo Jhuri Chaat a lip-smacking success!

The chaat mania continued with Class 1 doing a Peppy Papri Chaat. Pieces of papri were arranged by the pupils on paper plates. These were then topped with boiled potatoes. The teachers then mixed in chopped onion, beaten curd, and coriander leaves. A squeeze of lemon and a sprinkling of chaat masala ensured that nothing would be left for the teachers to taste.

It was Tangy Tikki for Class 2. These were growing children and so the teachers made sure that there were enough aloo tikkis on each plate. The tikkis were then covered with a generous dollop of ghoogni. The children helped themselves to beaten curd, chopped onion, chopped coriander, tamarind chutney, and a sprinkling of bhujiyas according to individual tastes. They enjoyed being able to garnish their dishes according to their fancy.

The party ended when the bell rang for the end of school and the pupils went home replete and happy.

WorkshopConnect to ShakespeareWhen: 24 MarchWhere: RANAN, KolkataParticipant from GHS: Ms G. Mukherjee (English)

Ms Tracy Irish, Education Department of the Royal Shakespeare Company, conducted a workshop on various activities to encourage students to engage with Shakespeare on a physical level. She suggested useful and practical ways of inculcating in learn-ers a lasting love for the fine arts through silent role-playing (singly, in pairs, and in groups), and verbal exercises (speech rhythm, punctuation, connotation).Various aspects of literature, like metre (e.g. iambic pentameter), and meaning were dealt with through reading, cyclical role-playing, and tableaux.Ms Irish also discussed techniques that could help teachers identify the nature of the literary orientation of individual learners. A set of repetitive game-like exercises performed in pairs where 1/2/3 becomes progressively CLAP/2/3, CLAP/STAMP/3 and finally CLAP/STAMP/CLICK helped categorize learners into groups like ‘comfortable-with-words’, ‘comfortable-with-actions’ or ‘comfortable-with-both’. Accordingly, teaching techniques could be customized to suit individual types of comprehension. To conclude, the teaching of literature was perceived to be incomplete unless the learner became involved with the text at a highly personal, physical, analytical and immediate level.

This was followed by a Bengali one-act play Rakshas Badh Pala. A satire by Soumitra Basu, it shows how King Habuchandra is flattered and misguided by his coterie of ministers and advisors. When Demons appear and begin to kill his subjects, the King

decides to fight against them. He, however, realizes that he is no match for them. A young boy and girl come to his rescue and help him to obtain from the Goddess Ganga a weapon to kill the Demons. The Goddess also blesses him, and Habuchandra realizes that he has to reach out to his people to become Udaditya, a wise and good
