2018 WINE Catholic Women’s Conference at Mary Mother WINE: Women In the New Evangelization invites women of all ages and stages to the WINE: Catholic Women’s Conference on Saturday, February 10, here at Mary Mother. The theme, Hope: An Anchor for the Soul, is inspired by Saint Philomena’s example and Pope Francis’ invitation to fight against enemies of hope (like discouragement and negativity) in order to shine as beacons of hope to those we encounter. The day includes inspirational talks, music, lunch, prayer, shopping, confession, chocolate, and more. This conference is the perfect way to prepare for Lent, which begins the week after the conference. Registration is $65. For more information and to register, visit www.CatholicVineyard.com and select the “EVENTS” tab.

GOSPEL REFLECTION By Nan Ahlgren

Growing up, I heard Bible stories about Jesus on hillsides, along roads, or in private

homes with people. How surprised I was when I later read that Jesus taught in the

synagogues. More surprising yet was the mention in Mark, this week’s Gospel, that

someone in the synagogue had an unclean spirit. (Mark 1:23-28)

We read the people were amazed by the authority of Jesus. The authority of his

teaching was different from that of the scribes, and he had a command over

unclean spirits which set him apart from others.

The authority by which the scribes taught was based upon calling forth the authority

of respected rabbis. They taught by quoting the interpretations of the Law made by

the rabbis. They were required to cite the specific rabbi for each interpretation. In

contrast, Jesus taught as one who had authority conferred upon him directly by

God. Even the unclean spirit in the man recognized his authority.

When Jesus silenced and removed the unclean spirit, the people were also amazed.

In that day, people resorted to one of two ways to have a spirit leave. Either they

would try to compel a spirit to flee on its own, by subjecting it (and the person) to

extremely pungent odors, or they would cite incantations, appealing to a greater

force than themselves to exert power over the spirit. Jesus merely commanded the

spirit to “be quiet” and come out of the man, and he was obeyed.

The Greek word for “unclean”, in this text, means one who is mixed or not pure. It

implies being idolatrous or impious. The question posed by the spirit expresses an

awareness of eventual destruction. There is apprehension or a self-protecting

resistance in response to Jesus.

These days, I wonder, “Was the man with the unclean spirit a scribe?” I might be

able to make that case. However, the text in Mark simply does not tell us. Neither

do the parallel stories of this text found in Matthew and Luke.

Even without knowing the exact identity of the people in this passage, we can still

reflect upon their reactions and consider how we have responded to Jesus along

our own faith journeys. Was it with amazement? Have we spread the news, sought

him out further or followed him to a new place? Have we sometimes been

dual-natured in our response? Have we perceived being called to something

different and responded with fear or resistance? Have we depended upon someone

or something other than Jesus?

As much as I want to see myself as always being amazed by Jesus and trying to

follow, there are times my spirit has been unclean. We are all sinners. Yet, we know

from Scripture that we can always approach him with confidence and receive his

mercy and grace. We can also read the Word, hear his voice still, and be amazed

daily.

2018 Catholic Services Appeal Our parish is now conducting the

2018 Catholic Services Appeal for the

18 Collective Ministries

of the Archdiocese that

no one parish can

support on its own. The

CSAF recognizes each

parish itself as a ministry

integral to the daily life of

the Archdiocese. Our

parish really is our second home; we

see our brothers and sisters in Christ

every week as together we celebrate

the Mass. It is also where we are

prepared and supported as disciples to

go forth to preach the Gospel. Thus our

parish is a benefited ministry of the

CSA; we receive 25% of the dollars we

collect in our parish if we reach our

parish goal. Please prayerfully consider

making a pledge to help us reach our

goal! For more information on the

ministries, visit www.csafspm.org.

Sign Up for Parish E-Mails Are you receiving our e-mails? Each

week Mary

Mother sends

out the Mary

Mother e-mail

Messenger. It’s

a great way to

keep up with

events at Mary Mother and to prepare

for Mass. Sign up on our website at

www.mmotc.org and start receiving the

Messenger every Thursday!
