Martes: Juan 10: 22-30

others in our memory and in our lives? When I was 10 years
old I was an altar boy. Before that I was an angel, but that’s
a story for another day. (I have pictures to prove it, too.)
I remember the day of my first communion. It was
cold and damp. That Sunday in May was my godfather’s
birthday but I didn’t know it then. All of us preparing for our
first communion were so caught up in the details of the
ceremony that we had little thought of anything else. First
communion at the 8 o’clock Mass, “the children’s Mass”,
then back to church in the afternoon for Vespers and
investiture with the brown (Carmelite) scapular.
From time to time, when I can manage to get to
Putnam, I may bump into my first communion partner,
Jeanne, now a retired catholic school principal, and a
woman of great faith or Moe, a childhood neighbor and still
a friend. Last week at the reception after one of the three
funerals we had, I happened to meet Paul, a classmate I had
not seen since we graduated from Saint Mary’s.
Over the next few weeks, the children of the Corpus
Christ Catholic Community parishes who have been prepared
in the Religious Education program, both Spanish and English
tracks, and in Saint Mary-Saint Joseph School will approach
the altars of our churches to encounter the Good Shepherd of
our souls. These precious children have been formed by
loving parents, grandparents, godparents and teachers to
seek Jesus and to trust in Him.
So on this Good Shepherd Sunday as I look at our
children preparing for their first reception of Jesus in the
Holy Eucharist, I cannot help but wonder by what path the
Holy Spirit will lead them. Will they meet Jesus often in
communion? Will they stay in touch with the friends they
have made as they prepared for this special moment? Will a
few of them pursue religious vocations? Will those among
them who become parents guide their children to the altar
and a deeper relationship with Jesus?
These children remind us of the responsibility that is
ours to lead a virtuous life and to teach them by our example
what a follower of Jesus acts like, not just on Sunday, not
just in Church but every day and everywhere.
Let us all pray for them as they approach this singular
moment in their lives that it may shine out and not with a
solitary brilliance but with a splendor that extends to every
day of their lives and illuminates our world.
Devotedly yours in Christ,
Fr. Larry
¿Conocerán a
P. Larry
