Greetings and welcome to the first edition of BP’s Nova Scotia newsletter. My name is Rob O’Connor and I’m the Exploration Manager for Canada.

Over the past few months, BP has been working with WesternGeco to initiate its Tangier 3D Seismic Survey project offshore Nova Scotia. With the recent approval of the project’s environmental assessment, we’re excited to finally commence our seismic operations.

In the coming months, we will conduct an offshore seismic survey over our four licences located approximately 300 kilometres southeast of Halifax. BP is excited to enter a new exploration area in offshore Nova Scotia. It gives us access to a significant new geologic basin, one of the most promising to be licensed in recent years.

BP is committed to conducting its business in a safe, sustainable and environmentally responsible manner and values building meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships with the local communities it operates in. Over the past year, we had the opportunity to engage with local stakeholders to discuss BP’s work offshore. We have also developed community investment initiatives in Nova Scotia to promote environmental and energy literacy.

BP Canada strives to make positive and long-lasting contributions to the communities in which we operate. Our Community Investment Strategy is to make a difference in three areas: Education, Environment and Community.

In 2013, we announced our first community investment in Nova Scotia, a $50,000 one-year partnership with The Discovery Centre - Nova Scotia’s hands-on science centre. This year, we supported the Discovery Centre’s Brain War competition fundraiser by sponsoring all 12 university teams that took part in the event. Brain War, held in February, pitted the best minds against one another to test their knowledge of and skills in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, music and art (STEAM).

In addition, we were also a Gold Sponsor of the Core Energy Conference last year, an annual gathering of energy industry decision makers and stakeholders with the goal to identify, promote and support opportunities in the sector.

We have also committed to a Platinum Sponsorship of the Nova Scotia Energy R&D Conference to be held in May. This conference is one of the most recognized and well attended energy conferences in Canada, attracting more than 350 delegates from across the country and internationally.

We will continue to look for further opportunities that support environmental and energy literacy. Our goal is to establish and strengthen our relationships with key stakeholders while having a positive impact in the areas where we have a presence.

BP Canada Kicks Off Community Investment Activities

BP has hired WesternGeco, the world’s largest seismic contractor owned by Schlumberger, to carry out the Tangier 3D Seismic Survey offshore Nova Scotia.

The work will help BP evaluate the subsurface geology of the licences and potentially identify rock structures that may contain oil or natural gas. WesternGeco, which is owned by Schlumberger, expects to begin the work in May using a fleet of six vessels, all of which have operated offshore Canada before.

The fleet arrived at the Port of Halifax in May. All vessels that make up the seismic configuration are equipped with a sound source that sends acoustic waves through the water.

BP has decades of experience managing the extraction of oil and natural gas in all types of environments around the world, both onshore and offshore. In recent years, we successfully conducted offshore seismic programs in many other regions, including the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, Australia and Angola.

BP has carried out successful seismic surveys offshore Canada before: In 2009, the Pokak 3D seismic study safely collected more than 1,500 square kilometres of 3D data and more than 1,400 kilometres of 2D data in the Arctic’s Beaufort Sea. It was, at the time, the most northerly 3D marine seismic program ever conducted.

BP’s top priority is safety. Its 2009 Pokak seismic survey in the Canadian Beaufort and the 2012-2013 Canadian onshore seismic program in Alberta were completed without any recordable injuries or recordable spills.

BP’s health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) goals are no accidents, no harm to people and no damage to the environment. Everyone who works for BP is responsible for ensuring his or her safety and the safety of colleagues, partners, suppliers and local communities. WesternGeco, BP Exploration’s contractor for the Tangier 3D Seismic Survey also complies with HSSE regulatory requirements and BP’s HSSE policy.

Experienced seismic contractor coming to Nova Scotia

BP will use a technology called WATS, or wide azimuth towed streamer, for the Tangier 3D Seismic Survey. It was developed by BP and is now an industry standard. WATS technology will help evaluate the subsurface geology of BP’s licences and identify rock structures that may contain oil or natural gas. WesternGeco, which operates in nearly 80 countries, has been active offshore Nova Scotia for three decades. WesternGeco operates in many varied and often challenging geographical environments and maintains a commitment to the highest standards of its employees, customers and contractors, as well as for the protection of the environment in the communities in which it operates. As part of its contract with BP, the company will ensure it complies with HSSE regulatory requirements and BP’s HSSE policy.

These waves travel to the bottom of the sea, where they are reflected from the rock layers in the earth. Two of the vessels, the Western Neptune and the Western Regent, will also tow streamers. These are long cables floating near the water surface which are fitted with hydrophones that receive and record the echo. The other four vessels, the Western Patriot, the Western Pride, the Geco Diamond and the Ocean Odyssey, will carry only a sound source.

Five vessels will be active on the prospect at any one time, with the sixth ship a spare to relieve any one of the vessels carrying only a sound source. A multi-national crew of 38 to 62 members per ship, including Canadians, will operate the vessels. Seven marine training students from the Nautical Institute at the Nova Scotia Community College in Port Hawkesbury will be invited to spend time aboard to gain valuable offshore experience.
