The pink fairy armadillo is the smallest armadillo known. It grows to 90–115 mm in length and weighs about 120g. It is also the only species of armadillo that has its dorsal shell almost completely separate from its body. Its dorsal shell has very light pink coloured scales and the armadillo itself has fluffy, white fur underneath this shell. Sometimes the scales are a little less pink and a little more yellow or brownish. The shell is only connected to the creature via a membrane that runs along the spinal column. The shell is very fragile, suggesting that the creature does not rely on it as armour, like other armadillos do. The creature also has a spatula shaped tail that protrudes from a vertical plate at the blunt rear of its shell. They have very small eyes and so like most armadillos, they rely mostly on their sense of smell to find each other and their prey. This unusual animal is unique to the dry grasslands and sandy plains of central

Argentina. The pink armadillo is well adapted to this habitat as they are excellent diggers. They are able to completely bury themselves in a matter of seconds if they feel threatened. They are known to be living a fossorial lifestyle, meaning digging and living underground, like the badger or naked mole-rat. This armadillo is nicknamed the sand swimmer because of the speed and efficiency that it can borrow through sand. Their main food source is ants, and they will often be found burrowed in areas beside large ant colonies. Ants provide a constant food source for these armadillos, but they may also forage on worms, snails and plant matter. These creatures are hard to study as they so rarely come above to mainland, but they are thought to live solitary lives. They stay underground to be protected and only come out to feed at night. Their large front claws allow them to effortlessly move the sand and borrow underground. However, these large claws do have a set back for the small armadillo in that they make it difficult to walk on hard surfaces. However, during mating, they are believed to be polygamous (i.e. have more than one mate). The female will usually give birth to one young, whose shell will not fully harden until it is fully grown. It is believed that the pink hue of the dorsal shell is actually from blood running through it. The armadillo is believed to be able to use

this shell to control its body temperature. By exposing more blood to the cool air or soil, the armadillo is able to lower its temperature. Conversely, to retain its body heat, the creature could drain the shell of blood. Because this small armadillo is not seen very often, its actual conservation status is still uncertain. With this in mind, it is listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (an inventory of the global conservation status of biological species). The perceived decline in populations of this armadillo can be attributed to farming activities and a rise in predators such as domestic dogs and cats. Pink fairy armadillos must occupy undisturbed places that contain sufficient amounts of compact sand and hiding places, as well as a sufficient resource of food. It has been hard to domesticate these creatures and they haven’t appeared to survive more than a few days in captivity.

So July is here! This must mean that we are in the height of summer, right? I’m not sure where the sun is as I write this, as the ground is extremely wet and we are just recovering from a night of thunderstorms. Perhaps you are a lucky reader who is jetting off to your holiday destination full of sun. Or hopefully, as this issue is being delivered, we are all enjoying the beautiful sun in Sevenoaks!

July is an emotional month for me this year; my preschooler has their little graduation ceremony before heading off to ‘big school’ in September. And my youngest is approaching their first birthday. Time seems to just be flying by! It’s very easy to say and not so easy to do during the daily chaos, but I really must try to cherish these special moments. It’s all a bit too easy sometimes to just keep planning for the next thing and to focus on moving forwards (which we are doing lots of at the moment, but I’ll fill you in on that in the next issue).

Anyway, enjoy the issue and do get in contact if you have any local community events to contribute.

Serves 2• sunflower or light olive oil, for frying• 1 onion, finely diced• 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped, grated or crushed• 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into 5mm-thick slices• 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut

into 5mm-thick slices• 200g paella rice – calasparra paella rice if you can get it• 100g mushrooms, finely sliced• 3 tomatoes, diced• 1/4 tsp smoked paprika• 1/4 tsp paprika• 2 pinches of saffron threads

• 1 litre of good veg stock• 100g green beans or sugar snaps, or a mixture of both (if using beans, top, tail and chop into thirds)• good handful of parsley, chopped• 1 lemon, cut into wedges• salt and pepper

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a heavy-bottomed paella pan or large frying pan or flameproof casserole. Add the onion and fry gently on a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring now and then. Add the garlic and peppers to the onion and stir for 2 minutes. Add the rice, mushrooms, tomatoes, both types of paprika and saffron. Pour in three quarters of the stock and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Keep an eye on the liquid and top up with a little more stock or water as needed (you might not need it all). The paella shouldn’t be sloppy at the end so add liquid sparingly during the last 10 minutes. While the paella is cooking, boil the green beans for 3 minutes, then refresh them in a bowl of very cold water. If you are using sugar snaps, you can simply throw them in raw towards the end of cooking (see below). After 30 minutes of cooking, check the rice is tender and cook a little longer if needed. If there is any excess liquid, turn up the heat and stir to boil it off. Then cook very gently without stirring, to create a crust on the bottom (it’s not very easy to achieve without a proper paella pan, though). Stir in the beans and parsley. Turn off the heat and leave to stand for 2 minutes, then check the seasoning and serve with wedges of lemon.

Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. Th ey attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfi gurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfl y and Blackfl y, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and predominantly aff ects conifer hedging. Damage infl icted onconifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown

patches on the hedge. Th is leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread.
