Sanctuary Model® Update Ashley Barclay, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Worker
Since the Sanctuary Kick-Off in June, the CGC and Core Team have been working on continuing to embed Sanctuary concepts in the agency through monthly themes that focus on a specific concept each month. July and August focused on the commitment to Social Learning, which focuses on working as a group to learn from our mistakes and successes. This reframes “failures” as learning opportunities and allows the group to grow in knowledge. In September, employees focused on Open Communication. The commitment to Open Communication is about improving communication by allowing people to express
their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment or reprisal and to foster open, honest discussions about issues and trauma. For each monthly theme, employees are encouraged to practice the commitment themselves, and recognize others for practicing the commitments through the use of “You Cards,” which employees give to each other when they see someone practicing the commitment. As implementation progresses, the monthly themes and “You Cards” will, as well, in order to continue to embed Sanctuary concepts within the agency.
CGC Participates in Recovery and Suicide Prevention Month. Josiah Jones, PR Director
September is known as National Recovery and
National Suicide Prevention Month.
Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by
those in recovery, just as we celebrate health
improvements made by those who are managing
other health conditions such as hypertension,
diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. The
observance reinforces the positive message that
behavioral health is essential to overall health,
prevention works, treatment is effective, and
people can and do recover.
National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
helps promote resources and awareness around
the issues of suicide prevention, how you can
help others and how to talk about suicide without
increasing the risk of harm. Suicidal thoughts can
affect anyone regardless of age, gender or
background. Suicide is the third leading cause of
death among young people and is often the result
of mental health conditions that effect people
when they are most vulnerable.
CGC participated heavily in Recovery/Health Fairs
and Suicide Prevention Walks during the month
of September. CGC understands the importance
of getting the word out about services that can
help individuals in their recovery. Please go to
www.thecgc.com to find out more about CGC’s
services that can help individuals find their path
of recovery.

Speaking Out in
Psych Rehab
Natasha Fox,
Psych Rehab Director
September 2016 has been
declared ‘National
Speakout Month’ in the
United States. CGC
believes in encouraging our
consumers to tell their own
stories of living with and
overcoming mental illness
by hosting a Speakout
within each of our
Psychiatric Rehabilitation
Programs. Throughout the
month, consumers
incorporated Speakouts
into programming by
creating and sharing their
own stories of recovery to
demonstrate the growth
that they have had since
their initial diagnosis.
During the last week of
September, consumers
held a forum, inviting all
CGC employees to attend,
and shared their stories to
demonstrate the journey
that each individual has
traveled.
As the 2016-2017 school year has begun, the Community Guidance Center is continuing to provide quality outpatient services within the school setting in several schools across Indiana County. This year we are excited to introduce, Ashley Alexander, as our new School Based Therapist. With the addition of Ashley, we are able to provide our School Based Mental Health treatment not only to our existing students, but also to other students who have commercial insurances that we are contracted within the school setting.
Furthermore this year, Ashley will be working with school personnel and families on expanding the benefits of School Based Therapy, such as groups ,that target the challenges of bullying, self-esteem, peer pressure, and other related topics that are affecting students every day. Moreover, we are looking to develop services within the summer which include group and individual therapy to meet the needs of students and families while school is not in session.
What is School Based Outpatient Therapy?
This is a program which helps students discover their potential by providing traditional Outpatient Therapy within the school setting.
Why School Based Outpatient Therapy?
The school setting allows the therapist to capitalize on the students existing academic and social networks and are able to observe and treat the student within their natural environment.
Additionally, this setting is often times closer to the student’s home, which reduces barriers of transportation and location at times.
How to Refer?
Referrals for School Based Mental Health Treatment services can be made from any source including school personnel, other community providers, parents, and self referrals. Referrals can be made by contacting the Center by phone or in writing. Upon receiving the referral for School Based Outpatient Mental Health Treatment services, the Community Guidance Center will contact the student and legal guardian to schedule an assessment and intake for services. Initial intake will be completed by the school based therapist on the premise if applicable.
What happens after intake?
Upon completion of the intake, the assessment will be reviewed by the clinical treatment team to establish initial diagnosis and treatment plan. Students/families will be informed of the decision and/or start of service. Additionally, any external referrals will be followed up with as well.
If there are any questions please contact Outpatient Director Lexi Miller, LCSW at 724-465-5576, ext 242.
If there are any specific questions regarding intakes and/or starting services please contact Intake/BSU Director Michelle Barnhart, MS at 724-465-5576, ext 261.
