PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEThis is the Week of Weeks with Science Week, Book Week and SSO Week all being celebrated!
SSO Week – In Appreciation of our Support Staff This week recognises the work of our school support staff. We have a support staff team who work tirelessly, promoting a positive service culture and presenting a great connection to our school community and our teaching and learning programs.
Thank you to you all. We feel very fortunate at The Heights to have you working with us.
Science Demonstration Day On Monday the 13th August Science demonstrations were held throughout the day in our Gym. Students from Reception to Year 10 were able to see the Science show that included exploding elephant toothpaste, ice cream, liquid nitrogen, air cannons, balloons and much more. Well done - how exciting is Science!
Book Week Book Week culminated in a parade on Tuesday 14th August with nearly all of our Junior students and many others too dressing up in characters associated with this year’s theme ‘Find Your Treasure’. Disney princesses and pirates and much more were prevalent. Many parents attended and we thank you for your support.
Phonics Screening Test During the next couple of weeks Year 1 students will take a phonics screening test to help identify where students need further development in understanding the relationship between letters and sounds. This is the first time this has occurred in South Australia and will be interesting to see how we can use the results in classrooms.
NAPLAN Online In Week 5 this Term some of our students will participate in trial NAPLAN tests using computers online. This is in readiness for 2019 when the paper based NAPLAN tests move to an online model.
Congratulations Governing Council continues to recognise and support individual student achievement.
Jack Marschall has been selected in the South Australian Schools Orienteering Team to compete in the Australian Schools Orienteering Carnival in Queensland. Congratulations Jack!
School Closure Reminder Monday 3rd September is the annual School Closure Day coinciding with the Adelaide Show. Friday 31st August is also a Pupil Free Day for students as staff are involved in a professional learning program.

2018 STUDENT VOLUNTEER WEEKVolunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people and organisations in need. Volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you as much as those you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills.
The Heights school is fortunate to have an amazing group of students who volunteer their time in an array of activities. We wish to recognise the dedication of the following students and sincerely thank them for their significant contributions;

PATHWAYS COMMUNITY CENTRE
PENANG EXCHANGE 2018
INDONESIAN DANCE
Supporting local families during colder monthsAt The Heights School providing a caring P-12 community has always been something we are proud of. Ensuring nurturing platforms for children to blossom and be themselves is crucial for their development.
Our school has a wonderful relationship with the Pathways Community Centre who assists us in supporting families within our community. We are fortunate this relationship continues to grow and with their help aim to provide further assistance to families in current need.
We are asking for donations of food and/or basic household items to assist families during this cold weather. We have large boxes placed in our Front Office and Primary Years Office for items to be placed. These items will be collected by the Pathways Community Centre and made into vital hampers for identified families. Pasta, rice, heat & eat meals, muesli bars, soups, crackers, lunchbox snacks, toilet paper, soap, tissues, etc – all welcome. Any contribution you can make, no matter how small, will have a huge impact on a child’s day.
Donation boxes are now available for your generosity and will remain until the end of Term. Please donate to spread the feeling of warmth.
Our biggest thanks,
Noelle Wallis, Pastoral Care Worker & Vicki Cook, Business Manager
The cultural exchange to Penang was an incredible experience. I was able to learn so much about Malaysian culture, education, and society. Penang is such a vibrant island, from the street art, to the temples, to the people. Everywhere we went had an interesting history and meaning to it and I loved learning about the cultural and historical value everything had. Along with learning about Penang, I am so glad that I was able to make so many beautiful friendships with such lovely people. The exchange was so valuable as it allowed me to appreciate and immerse myself in Malaysian culture on a level that I would not be able to any other way. All in all, it was a fantastic week with amazing people - definitely an experience that I will never forget and one I would definitely recommend.

The spirit’s alive in 807!
Tor-Tor dance, a traditional dance from Batak tribe in North Sumatra used in rituals associated with spirits. Well, there appeared to be plenty of spirit amongst the class of 807 when a visiting Indonesian dance group visited the school to teach them some of the complex yet flowing steps of this dance.

STAGE 1 FOOD AND HOSPITALITY EXCURSION
Stage 1 visit to Café Primo, Golden Grove
Recently, the Stage 1 Food and Hospitality students visited Café Primo at Golden Grove to enjoy a café style lunch. As a part of their first Semester 2 assessment task, students were asked to identify current food trends that are occurring in the local area, with a focus on the cultural diversity of the menu. This excursion also allowed the students to gather some ideas for their own café style meal that they would be preparing in the following week.
Students ordered a variety of meals, from the traditional burgers, chicken parmigiana and chips, to the more adventurous butter chicken and Thai lime and coconut prawn curry. The service was excellent, and we were all treated to complimentary garlic bread, which ensured that we were all very full by the time that we left the café.
I would like to thank Ms Gen Lempens who joined our class for lunch and the Stage 1 students who made the visit to Café Primo an enjoyable lunch out.
Sarah Rogers, Food and Hospitality Teacher
YEAR 9 MOD.IFY EXCURSIONOn Tuesday of Week 10 students from 906 and 907 took an immersive journey through the MOD.IFY exhibition at UniSA on North Terrace with Mrs van Hoof and Mr Trainor. The exhibition was thoroughly enjoyed by the students and included thought provoking displays such as augmented reality artwork which used your smartphone to superimpose moving pictures of the art, a realistic robot that talks and interacts like a real person, an exhibition of potential body modifications, a Google Earth style room with 3D projections of planets, and much more. Of particular interest was the pain room, a dark room in which the students subjected themselves to electric shocks whilst looking at pictures, different coloured lights, and listening to different sounds and assessing how this modulated their assessment of the pain. The exhibition helped to expand students understanding of the interplay between Science and the Arts and overall was a great day out.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS INDIVIDUAL TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to the students who competed in a National Titles competition in Hobart recently. The competition was for dance and the girls were part of a team called the Black Diamonds.
This team train every weekend in the school gym and at Thebarton during the week. Their dedication has been rewarded with each member of the team winning trophies at the competition.
The team performed four routines. They came first in the ‘States’, first in the ‘Basic Routine’, first in the ‘Technical Routine’ and second in the ‘Dance Routine’.
The photo includes; Krystal, Tahlia, Amberlyn, Ashlyn & Angeline. Well done girls.

Congratulations to Caelan Doudle for his representation in the South Australian Rugby Union state team over the July school holidays.
South Australia won both games played against Melbourne Barbarians and Tasmania. Caelan played an outstanding game and was highly commended by the state coach for his performance in both matches.
We had sixteen girls from Years 6 and 7 participate in the SAPSASA Girls Football Carnival on Wednesday 1st August at the Tea Tree Gully Football Club. Fortunately, the weather was perfect (not hot and not too cold).
Out of twelve teams, the Heights P-12 School came 5th, which is a magnificent achievement considering most of the girls do not play football outside of school.
Thank you to Mr Jones for coaching the team.
Well done Sophie Brookes, Tahlia Slattery, Krystal Driver, Madison Carson, Marie Fotoulis, Ajin Lee, Sarah Kent, Denise Acuoth, Brenna Derrett, Angelpreet Kaur, Charlee Coleman, Soriya Khiev, Reign Aquino, Jazmin Clough, Shae Hodgetts and Emma Howe.
Mrs Rothery. SAPSASA Coordinator
On Monday the 13th of August our Year 8/9 Boys 9a-side AFL team represented The Heights School at the VISTA AFL carnival held at The Heights School. Although the boys finished 4th in division 1, their efforts weren’t reflected on the score board. The boys claimed 2 wins and only lost their final by 1 goal.
As the day progressed the boys became more confident with each other’s playing ability which was reflected through collaborative passages of play and beginning to open up space in the corridors, providing a greater opportunity for goal conversion. Well done to all students who participated in the carnival.
Eulaly Allen, Sports Coordinator
On Sunday 5th August, one of our Year 5 students, Hertuwesh Ravichandran, took part in the Primary Schools Individual Table Tennis Championships at Newton Sports Complex.
Hertuwesh played in three rounds and made the semi-finals. He finished up as the runner up for the C grade boys.
Well done Hertuwesh.
