First let me say that I am looking forward to serving as President of

the Huntsville Lakes PROBUS Club for the next year. We have a

wonderful Club that all members should be proud of. Enid and I

have greatly enjoyed our membership in this Club and have

made many good friends.

The month February gets its name from the Roman month

Februarius which means ‘purification’ (named after the

purification ritual Februa) and used to be the last month of the

year until around 450 BC when it became the second month.

February 14th as we all know is Valentines Day; it originated as

a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more

early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant

cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the

world, although it is not a public holiday in any country. The day

first became associated with romantic love within the circle

of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition

of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into

an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by

presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting

cards (known as "valentines").

It can be a rather drab and cold month which is where PROBUS

comes in. The number of groups and activities that are available

to our members covers just about any interest one could think of,

and if something is missing, then there is always the possibility of a

new group starting. I would urge all members, and especially new

members, to take a look at the activities and groups available

and sign up for one or two. It is by participating that we can get

the most value from PROBUS.

And in closing, I have a short quiz: What star do the following

movies have in common; Ghostbusters (2016), Identity Thief,

Bridesmaids and St. Vincent?

Answer: Come to the General Meeting to find out !

MEMBERSHIP

A very warm welcome is extended to the following new members who have joined our

Club since last August:-

Sylvia and Don Beattie Cindy and Dan Belliveau Eva Black and Bob Gibb

Rosemary Coffey Jim Derbyshire Denise Pinnegar

Barry Radford Pamela Tye Rose and Larry Verbik

Great news! Over 92% of our members renewed for 2018. At the start of the renewal

period in early September, we had 175 members. There were 13 members who did not

renew and we have recently welcomed 13 new members, so our membership presently

totals 175. The maximum number of members in the Club is set at 175 (+/-1). We have a

Waiting List which at present has fourteen names on it. Requests for membership will still

be received and names placed on our Waiting List. In the course of the year, it is likely

that space for new members will become available due to members’ changing

circumstances such as a move away from the area. When this happens, the ‘next in line’

on the Waiting List will be contacted. Details on how the Waiting List works are outlined

under Membership on the Home page.

Best wishes for a fun, informative and interesting year with Probus.

Lynn McGregor, Membership Chair

MEMBER CARE

One Sympathy card and two Get Well cards were mailed recently.

Be sure to contact me at [email protected] when you hear of any member who

should receive a Get Well or Thinking of You card, or the family of a member who should

receive a Sympathy card, as I would like to acknowledge this by sending a card on our

Club’s behalf. Many of you have let me know in the past, and I thank you for that.

Huntsville Lakes Probus Club makes an annual donation to Hospice Huntsville and the

Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary in memory of members’ loved one who passed during the

calendar year.
