LATROBE HIGH SCHOOL
Department of Education
Issue No. 10 30 July 2015
Principal’s Report We have had a settled start to Term 3, with students focused on their learning
and making the most of their opportunities. It was good to see a number of
parents at our Parent Teacher Evenings last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I
trust that parents were able to gain a clear understanding of their son’s/daughter’s
achievement in the first half of the year. I have attached a staff list with every
teacher’s email address, so parents/guardians are able to contact staff on a regular
basis if needed.
Staff Changes
At the start of Term 3, we have had three teachers out on long service leave: Mr
Taylor, Mrs Fantarella and Mrs Henry. I would like to thank Mr Hillier, Mr Keen and Mrs Hamilton for covering their classes. Mr Christie is currently on leave,
recovering from his third operation on his leg. We are hoping he will be back at
school half way through August; Mrs Totham is currently teaching Mr Christie’s
classes.
Don College Parent Information Evening – Wednesday 19 August
Don College teaching staff will hold an information session for parents/guardians
of Grade 10 students on Wednesday 19 August, starting at 7pm in the Latrobe
High Library. In the past, we have received excellent feedback from parents about
the evening. I encourage Grade 10 parents and guardians to attend, so you are
aware of all the opportunities that exist at Don College.
Parent and Student Information Evening- Thursday 20 August
We are holding our ‘Parent and Student Information Evening’ on Thursday 20
August for all prospective Grade 6 students and their parents. The evening starts
at 6:30pm in the school library. Parents and students who are unable to make it
on the night are encouraged to contact the main office to arrange a meeting and
tour of the school.

Ski Trip
It was an absolute pleasure taking 31 students away on the ski trip to
Mt Hotham. They were respectful to each other and made the trip
enjoyable for everyone. Our lodge managers, Rob and Tammy,
were glowing in their comments about our students. The students
should be proud of the positive way they approached learning to ski
or snowboard. Their persistence and support of each other helped
them grasp a challenging and difficult skill. We had a myriad of
conditions that students had
to adjust to, over the five
days. We had snow fall
every day and at one point
the temperature fell to a
chilly -7 degrees. The snow
was dry, which made skiing and boarding all that more
fun. I am certain that
students had a wonderful time and are already saving so they can
attend a ski trip next year with Latrobe High School or Don
College. We will be looking at advertising next year’s ski trip
early in Term 4 for interested Grade 9 and 10 students.
Stage Development
Earlier this week, we were given occupancy of our gymnasium
and new stage. It was exciting to conduct a sit-down assembly on
Monday morning, to show the students our newly renovated
facility. On Tuesday afternoon, approximately sixteen students
were trained in how to operate the new audio, visual and lighting
equipment. Students had the opportunity to nominate
themselves for the training; they will now be our skilled operators. I would like to thank Mike Wilkinson
(architect), Luke Quigley (Mead Con- Project Manager) and Simon Thompson (Mead Con- Site Forman)
for their professional and efficient
management of this project. We are
looking forward to holding our first
whole school assembly on Wednesday 5
August during Block 4. During this
assembly, we will be celebrating Philip
McKenzie’s retirement and the
wonderful service he provided to
Latrobe High School and the wider
North West Coast community.

GRADE 8 REPORT
Term 3 has started well for Grade 8 students and teachers. Students have settled in to a routine quickly and are
experiencing their new Personal Interest subjects.
On Tuesday 28 July, four University of Tasmania
students visited all Grade 8 students. This was the
first of three visits as they try to promote the idea of
further education, training, goal setting and career
direction. It was a valuable session which included
interaction between the UTAS and LHS students. The
Advocate completed a report, including photos, in its
July 29 newspaper.
On Wednesday 29 July, Jaz Hutchins, Zac Clarke, Billy
Thorne and Jesse Langmaid visited St Brendan Shaw
College to take part in a youth forum that included
Tasmania Police. The aim of the forum was to give
youth a voice on what issues are relevant to them and how the police force can work with them to build positive
relationships.
Congratulations go to the following students who received Strength Awards during Term 2.
Leigh Castles, Antoinette Clarke, Jesse McCulloch, Zac Clarke, Darcy Miller, Kassidy Baldock, Megan Clarkson, Kaleb
Barwick-Wilson, Chloe Lomax, Claire Jordan, Maggie Fulham, Arabella Gillies, Harmoni Richardson, Amy White,
Tarlia Johnson-Cooper, Montanah Jago, Sam Brown, Shania Grundy, Meg Lunson, Lily Maynard, Georgie Orlando,
Haylea Vince, Austin Taylor, Kate Carey, Leon Kahura, Piper Treloggen, Francis Baricuarto, Shaila Marshall, Kaycee
Hering, Taylah Woolley, Khai Middlecoat, Aaron Kaine, Joey Chaplin, Michaela Marshall, Jaime Frankcombe, Bronte
Duniam, Jared Gillam, Clinton Holiday and Jesse
Atkins.
This list shows how many Grade 8 students are
being recognised for excellence in line with the
school values. At the conclusion of Term 2, 60%
of Grade 8 students have received a Strength
Award. 33% of students have received multiple
Strength Awards in the first half of the year.
Congratulations and keep up the good work!

It’s That Time Of The Year Plover eggs are very well camouflaged. If there are plovers in your area, be careful not to step on the
eggs. Plovers will only swoop for about three weeks, so simply stay away from them during this time.
Plovers are found across Australia. They are a long-legged wading bird with a black head, white belly and
yellow facial wattles. Plovers and people often come into contact during breeding season. Plovers start to
define their territories in preparation for breeding in late winter (July – September). The plovers think
that people are potential threats to their nest/chicks and are endeavoring to scare you away with attacks
and swooping – contact is very rarely made with their target. The length of the activity will vary but
usually stops once the chicks hatch and are mobile (about 30 days after the eggs have been laid). It is
important to keep in mind that these birds are only rightly defending what is theirs and following their
instincts, just as humans would.
Just let the birds be. Don’t harass them they won’t harass you.
What Not To Do Around Breeding Plovers
1. Stare at the birds when being swooped. This may deter them, but it can also result in eye damage. It
should not be attempted without wearing eye protection.
2. Panic or run. It may encourage plovers to continue to attack.
3. Search for the nest or young.
4. Remove eggs or destroy nests as birds will re-lay or re-nest only prolonging the problem.
5. Harass, interfere or throw objects at the birds.

WANTED – LOOM BANDS AND LOOMS
If you have any preloved looms and loom bands, please drop them off at the school office. The looms and bands will be taken by
the travellers of the Cambodian Experience 2016 to Soksan (a school in Cambodia) for the students to use there.
GRADE 9 REPORT
It has been a very busy first two weeks of term as everyone has been settling back into classes and
routines.
Thank you to those parents who came along to our Parent Teacher Evenings last week. It was nice to be
able to meet parents and have a discussion about your child’s education as well as talk about their future
focuses. If you didn’t get the opportunity to speak to a staff member, please feel free to contact the office
to make an appointment, or email the teacher concerned.
Congratulations to the students, listed below, who have received strength awards in the first two weeks:
Rachel Bentley, Zac Cope, Katelyn Geard, Brett Haines, Lachlan Brown, Connor
Duncombe, Tayla Jones, Lucy Jordan, Ebony White, Sherie Ball, Edward Lancaster, Ben
Price, Lachlan Gaylor and Matthew Peirce.
As mentioned in the last newsletter, I am disappointed with the wearing of school uniform. Still, many
students are wearing inappropriate jackets and tops, as well as trousers. Boys’ trousers have been of a
real concern. Boys can either wear grey trousers, grey shorts or the blue parachute material track pants.
Latrobe High School prides itself on the wearing of uniform. If there is an issue regarding the purchase
of school uniform, please contact me on the school’s phone number.
As mentioned in the last newsletter, in our next grade assembly, we will begin having some conversations
regarding expectations for those considering applying for Leadership. Mr Gee will be speaking with
students and going over the process with them. Students need time to prepare themselves as this
process happens very quickly. Application for the position of Leader takes place towards the end of
Term 3, with candidate speeches happening early Term 4.
If you need to contact me regarding any school related issue, please contact me via email or the school’s
phone number.

Ski Trip Report
On 10 July, thirty one Grade 9 and 10 students set off to
Melbourne. We all met at the Spirit terminal around 5:45pm
ready to embark on our
adventure. Luck came with a
smooth sailing and we were all
excited to arrive in Melbourne.
Arriving Saturday morning we
dropped our bags off at the hotel
and spent the morning at the
Victoria Market. Time passed
quickly and students could choose to keep shopping, go to a footy game or go ice-skating. We
all met back at the hotel by 5pm, getting organised with what we were doing for the night. Only
ten people out of the group went to Bounce, while the rest went to another football game.
Everyone had a lot of fun, getting back to the
hotel about 11pm.
By 6am we were on the bus for a five hour
journey to Mt. Hotham. We arrived and were shown where we were staying.
Straight away we all got our ski gear fitted and jumped straight into our lessons.
We had lessons every day at 10:30am that we had to attend. These were to
teach us skills and techniques on how to ski and snowboard, depending on what
we had chosen to do. Our days started with free skiing and snowboarding in the
morning followed by our lessons. After lunch we would have the rest of the day
to enjoy the slopes. There
were a few minor injuries, however Grace did fracture her wrist.
Every single person was extremely appreciative of Tammy and Rob who
managed the lodge we were staying in. Rob kindly ran a trivia night which the
teachers technically won but were quickly disqualified. They made it feel like
we were part of their family and made it a great environment. Tammy also
made amazing food. Some funny things that happened were the boys singing
very badly in the showers, and a group of students who were challenged to a
snowball fight and completely destroyed the other people’s snowman.
Before we knew it, it was time to pack up and head back home. Our last day
included a little bit of time on the slopes before loading the bus to come
home. While we were at Mt. Hotham there were a few whiteouts. This made
conditions extremely cold and very hard to see in. On our way home we
stopped for lunch at Wangaratta before heading straight to the boat for the
trip home. We would like to thank Tammy and Rob, the teachers, along with
Grant, Penny and Tash for
making it a lovely trip. The boat
home was a little bit rougher, but
nothing we couldn’t handle. Only
a few boys were sick.
Going on the Ski Trip was definitely a worthwhile experience.

STATE REPRESENTATIVES
Congratulations to the following people who have recently represented or will be representing Tasmania in their
respective sports.
Connor Reed-Delaney represented the state in the School Sports Australia Championships in football last week.
The carnival was held in Geelong and played against Queensland, NSW, ACT, South Australia and Northern
Territory. The boys won in games against ACT and Northern Territory. They lost in games against NSW and South
Australia and fought out a nail-biting draw against Queensland.
Well done, Connor.
Edward Lancaster and Eve Bell were
selected to represent Tasmania in the
Australian Cross Country Championships
which will be held at the Moonee Valley
Racecourse on Saturday August 29 in
Melbourne. They were selected on the
back of very strong performances at the
Tasmanian All-Schools Cross Country
Carnival last term. Eve, however, has
chosen not to participate at the
Championships as she is concentrating on National Track and Field Championships next year. Good luck to you
both.
There were quite a number of students who made the Tasmanian squad for under 13 and under 15 boys and girls
futsal teams. Jacob Ball, Febey Mitchell, Tyler Lidster, Adam Price, Danyon Lyall, Xavier McClymont, Ben Price, Liam
Slatter, Christopher West, Sherie Ball, Asha Beveridge, Chloe Nicholls. And Tyler Lidster. They will travel to
Brisbane to compete in the National Futsal Championships.
Good luck to all.

Championships. Jayden will travel to Coffs Harbour to compete in the 9 day tournament, starting on the September
24.
Well done and good luck, Jayden.
Michael Kahura and Harley Hyde have been selected to represent Tasmania in the National Youth Rugby League
Championships in Melbourne. They play a practice match against Victoria on August 8 and 9 before going to Rugby
Park in Melbourne to compete in the Nationals. Well done and good luck, boys.
During the July holidays Cameron McPherson competed in the state road cycling championships at Symmons Plains.
He won the Under 15 state cycling championship and the Under 15 state time trial. He was selected in the
Tasmanian team to compete at the National Road Cycling Championship to be held in Shepparton in September.
Well done, Cameron.
GRADE 7 REPORT
Grade 7 students have made a positive start to Term 3. Parents and students are reminded of our
uniform policy. Generic puffer jackets and coloured trousers are not a part of our school uniform. In the
coming weeks I will be visiting feeder primary schools as part of the transition process. I would like to
take two former students with me to every feeder school. Students will be responsible for preparing
and delivering a speech to all Grade 6 students. Interested students need to see me before Friday
August 7.
Congratulations to the following students who are awarded the Star of Grade 7:
7A Adam Price
Adam is always cheerful and helpful in Basic classes and works to the best of his ability.
7B Jacob Jones
Jacob has made a positive start to his education at Latrobe High School. He is cooperative and works
hard in Basics.
7C Declan Porter
Declan continues to try hard in Basics, giving his best efforts.
7D Ashlee Wooley
Ashlee is working well during Basics and setting a good example for her classmates.

Woolworths Earn & Learn is back! We have the chance to gain some amazing new
educational equipment for our school. Ask parents, guardians, friends and family to collect
the stickers each time they shop and drop them in the box at the front office. You can
collect until September so there’s plenty of time to shop until you drop!
