Student Placement for 2018
Dear Parents,
Each year the School Consultative Committee, after consideration of all factors, sets about the task of determining what it believes to be the most appropriate structure for the following year given our enrolments, staffing, educational philosophy & work practices and most importantly the needs of the children.
Enrolments are anticipated to remain consistent with approximately around 295 students for 2018.
Anticipated Student numbers for 2018
Year Anticipated Level Average
Foundation Classes 40 children
Year 1/2 Classes 86 children
Year 3/4 Classes 84 children
Year 5/6 Classes 84 children
Decisions regarding Class Placement of Students will soon be underway for next year. Please note that the school is well aware of the individual needs of each child and will consider these accordingly in class placement. Classes are re-grouped each year and students are mixed carefully, taking into account a fair distribution of gender, academic ability, individual, social, emotional and behavioural needs and students who would benefit by being kept together or separated.
2
If parents have any concerns regarding the class placement of their child for next year these should be made in writing prior to Friday 3 November and addressed to the Principal. It is not appropriate to approach teachers or any other staff member regarding these matters.
Concerns should only be made in exceptional circumstances and not on an annual basis. Parents must provide sound educational reasons to support their concerns. While concerns will be seriously considered, they may not be able to be granted. Personal requests for specific teachers will not be considered.
There is a long, arduous, professional, non-emotive process to make this selection so as to ensure the best learning environment for each child. Your child will be placed in the class that the teachers determine is the best for your child’s academic and social emotional learning. Ultimately the final decision for placement of students rests with the principal.
If you are not intending for your child to return to the school next year, please advise the school as soon as possible as this will have an impact on classes for next year.
Parents will be advised of classes for next year with their child's report, which will be available on Monday 18 December. An orientation morning for next year's classes will also be held on Monday 18 December from 9:00am to 11:00am. Once announced, classes for next year are final.
Regards, Brian Martin Principal

1:1 Chromebook Program - Frequently Asked Questions
Is it compulsory for my child to take part in the 1:1 Chromebook Program?
Yes. This device will enable your child to engage with the new Victorian Curriculum. Your child will require
this device to take part in the day-to-day learning in the school.
When do I need to purchase my device?
Purchases will need to be received by Monday 30th October, 2017. How can I purchase a Chromebook?
Chromebooks must be purchased through the Centrecom BYOD Education Portal which can be accessed
through the school website or via the following link:
http://eduportal.centrecom.com.au/Student/Register?schoolRegistrationCode=SHCPSO3166
Do I have a layby option?
Laybys can be made through Centrecom, however all payments must be made prior to the release of the
device to the school.
When will I get this device?
The device will be delivered to the school where it will be set up to run through the Catholic Education
Melbourne GAFE portal. It will be distributed on completion and ready for use.
I have recently purchased another device for my child. Can they bring that device to school?
The school requires all students to purchase the same Chromebook as we have chosen a device that has
proven long battery life, is lightweight, has touch screen capabilities and is an ideal device to use in a school
environment. Ensuring every student has the same device (with the same capabilities and warranty) also
greatly assists teachers to plan activities that use technology effectively in the classroom. Other devices
will not be supported by the online learning management system in our school.
What if my child forgets their device at home?
Our school’s Acceptable Use Agreement states that it is each student’s responsibility to ensure that their
device is charged at home and brought to school each day, ready to be used. Students who forget their
Chromebook will be unable to fully participate in the learning experience where the Chromebook is
required.
A reminder that the compulsory 1:1 Chromebook Program will continue at
Sacred Heart Primary School in 2018.
This means that each current Foundation and Year 3 student must
purchase a Chromebook to bring to school next year (Year 1 and Year 4,
2018).
6
Will my child use their Chromebook in every class?
The use of Chromebooks will be an integral part of a wide range of teaching and learning activities.
Teachers will determine when students should use their Chromebook. Students will also be encouraged
to use their Chromebook to support their learning outside of class time e.g. in the library, at home, etc.
Can I purchase insurance for the device?
It is recommended that all devices are insured, however this is the responsibility of the owner. An
insurance option is provided on the Centrecom BYOD Education Portal, alternatively, you may choose to
add it to your home and contents insurance.
How long is the device expected to last?
The device is expected to last for 3 years. As a result, the school has implemented the program at Year 1
and Year 4. Warranty is also for 3 years.
What do I do if I have questions regarding personal financial obligations?
Please make an appointment with the principal to discuss.
The exact product is cheaper at an alternative site, why can I not purchase that one?
We understand that there may be a significant price difference with an overseas online provider. Currently
some sales have prompted suppliers to advertise some products at BELOW COST. These products are not
sold for education purposes, come from various overseas manufacturing plants, and are not supported
under ACER 3 year Education onsite Warranty.
The ACER Chromebook purchased through Centrecom is inclusive of a 3 year warranty, which will cover
the life of the device at school. The education warranty covers a range of items not included in a retail
warranty e.g. replacement battery over the three years.
If there is an issue with the Chromebooks as purchased through Centrecom , the device may be fixed onsite
(at school) or within 2 -3 days, however a Chromebook purchased from an overseas supplier may take a
minimum of 6 weeks to return, once again only on a limited 1 year warranty.
Centrecom registers the Chromebooks with the Catholic Education Melbourne (CEM). This is not done
through the school. The technical staff employed by the school will then manage the Chromebooks to push
suitable apps and allow printing etc.
If there are any further questions please email the eLearning Team:
Sue Perkins, Jennifer Baker, Violet Marsh and Jan Morice.
On Monday the 30th of October, Sacred Heart will be celebrating Day for Daniel. Day
for Daniel is an initiative from the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. The focus of this day is to
educate students about keeping safe through child safety and protection activities and
lessons targeted to each year level. It aims to help empower the children to Recognise,
React and Report if they feel something is not right. We encourage students to wear a
splash of red on this day.
