It is all well and good to ask the questions but words without actions are meaningless. Last fortnight saw the inaugural parent forum sessions. Parents gave input into three issues and looked for potential solutions to problems. These issues and solutions have been taken to key decision making groups and followed up in various ways. Effective communication: Portals are being set up for parents to access key information such as newsletters, calendar, letters and policies. The Parents Association will also have a portal for key documentation to be shared between the members. Clarification on the nomination process for the School Education Board has also occurred. Dear Lord May our work together excite our hearts, and kindle in our minds a creativity to journey beyond the old limits, to listen to each other’s voices so our circle of hands and hearts have a common goal. May our work challenge us towards new frontiers that will emerge as we begin to approach them, calling forth from us the full force and depth of our undiscovered gifts. May we be fair in our expectations and compassionate in our criticism. May we have the grace of encouragement that awakens the gift of love and respect in another’s heart helping to build in them new ideas and a vision that will inspire. May we remember Lord to be kind to those who journey with us, and help us to remain aware, of the quiet world that lives behind each face in our community. Closing the Circle Dear Parents, Since the beginning of the year I have been asking a number of representative groups and individuals to give me feedback on issues within our school community. The aim of this listening exercise is an attempt to resolve issues in our community that get in the way of students achieving their maximum potential. It is all well and good to ask the questions but words without actions are meaningless. Last fortnight saw the inaugural parent forum sessions. Parents gave input into three issues and looked for potential solutions to problems. These issues and solutions have been taken to key decision making groups and followed up in various ways.

• Effective communication: Portals are being set up for parents to access key information such as newsletters, calendar, letters and policies. The Parents Association will also have a portal for key documentation to be shared between the members. Clarification on the nomination process for the School Education Board has also occurred. See further in the newsletter for this process and nomination form.

• Alcohol in schools: Reflections have been taken back to the School Education Board that will influence our school’s Alcohol consumption policy. This draft policy will also go before staff before being presented in the coming weeks. I have also asked many parents on the playground their opinion on alcohol consumption where children are present at school endorsed events.

• Homework: Key issues will be taken to a focus group of the School Education Board. These issues will be used to help frame a detailed homework survey. This survey will be offered to parents, teachers and children to review and set directions for homework in the future. A revised homework policy will follow reviewed by both the School Education Board, School Leadership Team and Staff.

A future forum has already been set for May 14 at 2:20pm and repeated at 7:00pm with a number of potential issues being flagged including school uniform. Other potential forum discussion ideas can be left at the office or emailed to myself on [email protected]. I also ask you complete the KidsMatter survey mentioned in this newsletter. The results will inform the program and policy in wellbeing. Questions were also asked of each of you on the Parent Teacher Information Meeting Sheets in Week 5. A collated list has been looked at by the school’s leadership team. This list has informed the direction of Parent Information Sessions for this year. Major areas identified that we hope to provide information sessions during this year include: cybersafety, wellbeing (including resilience, bullying prevention and relationships), maths and reading strategies and religious education. Kathy Brick (Junior Literacy Leader) has already been running information sessions for literacy helpers in the junior grades in the past weeks. As you can see there have been many questions asked, voices listened to and directions set. These listening processes not only increase effective communication, they also seek to identify new ways in which to increase learning outcomes for students. Hopefully these strategies will be seen as ways that we can ‘close the circle’ as we create solutions together. Regards Brian Martin Principal SCHOOL FINISHES FOR TERM 1 ON FRIDAY 4 APRIL AT 1.00PM. PLEASE SUPPORT MOLLY’S FUND FOR DRAVET SYNDROME

Hi, my name is Ava Donovan and I am in 3/4N at Sacred Heart. I am hoping to raise awareness of a cause that is very important to me and my family, Epilepsy. I have a very rare, life threatening form of Epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome and during March- Epilepsy Awareness Month- I want to raise awareness of people like me living with Epilepsy. Our friend Molly Clohessy lost her battle with Dravet Syndrome in August 2012, so her mum Kelly has now set up a fund in Molly's memory, ‘Molly's Fund For Dravet Syndrome' to raise funds for research into Dravet Syndrome and to assist and bring families like mine together. It is also a very special celebration for the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria celebrating their 50th Anniversary helping families like ours deal with living with Epilepsy. On Friday 28th March, Colleen O’Grady, my mum Joylene & I will be selling wrist bands for $2.00 each in support of Molly's Fund. Bands will be on sale before and after school on Friday 28th March on the deck near the sports shed.

Thank you for your support
