From the Principal’s Desk…………... Welcome to Term 3 Week 6 at Kilmore Primary School. What a busy week! PJ day and Book Week. I would like to thank you for supporting these two events. We try not to have too many events in one week but this one was unavoidable. A grade two student who chose to write a persuasive letter to me seeking permission to reward children and teachers for their hard work initiated the PJ day. It was decided that this would happen half way through the term. Book Week happened at the same time and so we found ourselves in this situation. Never the less, the buzz in the school is wonderful. 5/6 Camp Next week our grade 5/6 students head off to camp. We wish them a great experience and thank the staff and parent volunteers in advance for their commitment to the camp program. Without them, the program would not be possible. Celebration time!!!!

I am very happy to say that we have been able to grant another wish. At our meeting around the priority review in 2015, we all wished for improved student outcomes. This year’s NAPLAN results indicate that we are achieving this. I would like to share some initial NAPLAN data with you, as it is very encouraging. The graphs on the next page show the growth that students in grade five have made since their grade three NAPLAN test. The low column means that children have made less than the expected two years, the medium means that they have made two years growth and the high column means thy made more than two years growth

in the two-year time. In a nutshell: In every subject we had less students in the low growth column that the state average (represented by the dot). In all but grammar and punctuation, we had significantly more students in the high growth filed than the state average. In Numeracy 83.64% of students are at or above expected growth levels. In Spelling 96.23% of students are at or above expected growth levels. In Grammar and Punctuation 81.13% of students are at or above expected growth levels. In Reading 82.35% of students are at or above expected growth levels. In Writing 86.54% of students are at or above expected growth levels. These result are outstanding a testament to the hard work and skill of our teachers as well as the success of the whole school improvement plan implemented as a result of our priority review. Well done everyone!

What You Can Do @ Home to Help Prepare for Next Week’s Learning

F Data Practise asking and answering ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ questions to collect information. For exam-ple, ask family members, “Do you like animals?” Record the answers.

1 Addition & Subtraction

Find the difference between two numbers/amounts. For example, Asha had 12 carrots and Zane had 14. How many more carrots did Zane have?

2 Time Look at the time on analogue and digital clocks at different times during the day. Read the times. Match the analogue time with the digital and vice versa.

3 & 4 Addition & Subtraction / Mass / Loca-tion

Mass: Practise estimating the mass of food packages. Check your prediction by looking on the packaging to find the mass. Location: On your way to/from school, give directions. Pretend you are a ‘Nav Man’ / TomTom app.

5 & 6 Angles / Shape Angles: How many acute angles can you find in the environment? Estimate their size. Shape: Practise using mathematical terms to describe shapes. For example, faces, edges, vertices, parallel, adjacent, opposite. How many 2D and 3D shapes can you find on your trip to/from school?

Last Week’s Word Problem Did you solve the ‘What Am I?’ puzzle in last week’s newsletter? I’m a 3D shape with no curved surfaces. All of my faces are the same shape. I’ve got six faces and 12 edges. I’m the same shape as dice. The answer is ‘I’m a cube!’

an all you can eat/sleep

Left: New chairs recently arrived for the meeting room. Some of my Grade 5 friends volunteered to build the chairs during their lunch break. They came every day for a week and worked together until the job was done. Thanks boys! I’d like to say I helped put the chairs together. But, I didn’t. I did, however, help to look after a nearby egg sandwich. I thought it would be an eggcellent idea if I ate it – but I wasn’t allowed.

Right: I was lucky enough to have a groom this week. I can ’t brush my own hair, so it’s always nice when people do it for me. It loosened all my hair and I said goodbye to two handfuls of it. Below: I love it when classes visit the library.

This year’s Book Week theme is Escape to Everywhere. We’re celebrating all week at KPS. Jack has left his beanstalk at the office. Classrooms have been transformed into far away places, including Mermaid Lagoon and Pixie Hollow. Only two more sleeps until

Literacy & Numeracy Week 2107
