Safe Isolation of Electrical Supplies

Unit Aims

By the end of the unit participants should be able to:

State the need for isolation before any work is carried out on an electrical installation or system.

(Syllabus Reference: 1.1.07)

Safe Isolation of Electrical Supplies

Many fatal electrical accidents occur during the proving of isolation. You must be on guard, as you may have no idea whatsoever of the type of supply you are dealing with. Before beginning work on any electrical circuit you should make sure that it is completely isolated from the supply by following recognised procedures drawn up by the ‘Joint Industry Board’ (JIB) for the Electrical Contracting Industry:

Identify sources of supply

Isolate

Secure the isolation

Test voltage indicator

Test the system is dead

Retest voltage indicator

Begin work.

For more information see pages 16 to 23 of ‘Electrical Installations Level 2 2330 Technical Certificate’ – revised for the 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (ISBN 978 0 435401 09 2).
