IWM (Imperial War Museums) is a global authority on conflict and its impact, from the First World War to the present day, in Britain, its Empire and Commonwealth.

Founded in 1917 when the First World War was still being fought, IWM collects material that records people’s experiences of modern war. Some of these experiences tell of everyday life in wartime, others give us a glimpse of something exceptional. They tell of human spirit and resilience, creation and destruction, lives torn apart or brought back together. Our evolving collections reveal stories of people, places, ideas and events and will challenge you to think about war in a new way.

IWM Publishing produces books which draw on the unparalleled expertise and archives of the museum. Our list is distributed all over the world and includes exhibition catalogues, histories, collection-based titles, gift books and guides.

POSTERS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Recruitment, propaganda, rationing, fundraising – during the First World War posters were used to inform and rally the public as never before. Many of the designs remain icons today, for example Kitchener’s pointing hand or ‘Daddy, What Did YOU do in the Great War?’ This book has those, plus forgotten gems from Britain, Germany, France, Italy and America. A fascinating slice of social history and a wonderful resource for designers.
