A key message of this conference was thatit is critical to understand why your organiza-tion exists. Some of the most successful busi-nesses – Apple was used as an example – aresucessful because they truly understand whythey exist. This understanding keeps themfocused. It helps them craft messages to theircustomers that keeps them coming back. Ithelps motivate employees to do their best.

So I’ll ask again, why do we have a Photo-graphy club? Our bylaws state that we are, “tobring together persons who are interested inacquiring and developing an appreciation forthe art and techniques of photography.” Is thatit? What happens after we bring these people together?

I believe we are very fortunate in having agreat deal of skill and talent in our Club. Yousee, we don’t just bring people together. Westrive to help each other move to that next levelof photography. It doesn’t matter what skilllevel you have whenyou join this club. Whatmatters is that you areinspired to stay inter-ested in Photography. What matters is thatyou continue to striveto achieve a level ofphotography that is

right and comfortable for you. Having skilled Photographers to helpguide you is crucial.

Every club activity should have a “whywe do it.” This “why” becomes the purposeand what we hope to accomplish. Without apurpose these activities just become taskswithout any reward for our efforts. Whenwe understand why we have an activity it iseasier to get excited about participating. When we know an activity is designed tohelp a new member understand one smallpiece of the Photography puzzle, we can getexcited about helping.

We hear of Photography clubs disband-ing all the time. Maybe they didn’t under-stand why they existed in the first place.Keeping a club from falling apart takesmore than people paying their dues. That isimportant, of course. It allows us to pay for aplace to meet, a few basic supplies, and anoccasional speaker from outside our mem-bership. But what really matters is that wehave enough members willing to give theirtime and skills to run programs and activi-ties to make sure we can fulfill the ‘why’ weexist.

W hy do we have a PhotographyClub?

I just attended a conference, sponsored by the Episcopal Church, on giving. Before you think you’ve clicked on the wrongnewsletter or that I’ve totally lost my mind, juststay with me for a little longer.

ACCOLADES:

Alan Welch is the artist of the month during July at

the public library in New Bern. A reception will be

held July 11 at 7:00 pm to kick off Alan's exhibit.

William Ryan has an exhibit at the NC Estuarium223 East Water St. Washington, NC.

Show runs July & August. Meet the Photographer July 27 from 1-3 pm.My photos include landscapes, lighthouses and various wildlife.

My favorite is “Beauty.” I have been trying to get photos of wild

horses for awhile now, but they have proven elusive until this

June day. We had to walk about 2 miles, then after spending time

with them, it was as if she was posing for me. I like the catch light in

her eye and her tail even looks like she had it curled for her photo op.

Originally from Wilmington,so, NC native. Amateur level photography.Have used film and digital SLR.Eventually fell to the dark side, using my iPhone and iPad fortravel snaps. Trying now to return to using a camera. Worked professionally in the

historic, non-circulating collection of the Carolina Room inCharlotte. My area was working with photo collections andcataloging the negative collection of the CharlotteObserver that was donated to the library. Worked duringthe transition from film to digital. Prefer architectural images and some landscape. Below is the door to a mechanic’s garage in Italy, notcropped. Such a creative use of old tires. Typical of Italy, even a garage door is adorned with flowers. y

Just before we left, these lilies bloomed. So many plants weredamaged by standingbrackish water after Hurricane Florence,I was pleased to see these survivors. Hope I will be a survivor too.

I took some iPhone photographs on my way toPhiladelphia for additional treatment.

. I did not bring along my Nikon due to

luggage limitations.I stayed with friends on theEastern Shore of Virginia, halfway from New Bernto Philly. I noted that the wind stopped briefly al-lowing the dock to reflect crisply in the still water.

Seconds later the wind picked up and the moment had passed.

I also like the painterly look of bare trees on theleft. They look scraped out of wet watercolor.

.

From this angle the sunsetseemed to be projected from the

window. A beautiful real-timeview of the Chesapeake.

I like the way this bird is framed by branches against theabstract stripes of water and vegetation.

Editor’s Note:Eileen has given me permission to share her pictorialjourney as she deals with cancer.
