DESCRIPTION
Jakub Spanhel is one of the most prominent contemporary artists in the Czech Republic. He paints in a style that is both abstract and expressive to create highly evocative paintings bursting with energy and vibrancy. Famous for his gestural painting style, he is an artist who prefers to express himself on large canvases; however, despite this grandeur of scale, his compositions broach intimate, private themes. He paints with long brushstrokes from top to bottom of the unstretched canvas, which he lays out on the floor, and often adopts a minimalist colour scheme. Spanhel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and has been an influential figure on the Czech contemporary art scene since the 1990s.TRANSCRIPT
