GEM Driving Events for the first half of 2016

January 30, Saturday. M.A.R.E. donation and Magical Mystery Drive to follow …...

AT 9:45am GEM will meet at the M.A.R.E. riding facility to present M.A.R.E. with a donation

check for the 2015 year. If you are not already familiar with the M.A.R.E. organization, they

are one of the charitable organizations that our Golden Empire Region has contributed to

for many years.

After the M.A.R.E. presentation we will drive as a group on a mystery drive that will take us

through some mountain passes and as always, ending with the consumption of food.

We should be home by 2-3pm.

They are located on Johnson road, just off the intersection of Stockdale Hwy and Nord Ave.

The Saturday Breakfast will still be happening at the Crest RV Park as usual.

February ?? Ladies' Drives More details as they develop …..

Something a little different this year, ladies only drives. Anna and the girls will be putting

on driving tours that may appeal more to the ladies than the men. You know, shopping,

flowers, Chippendales. Stay tuned for times and locations that these tours will be occurring.

March 5, Saturday. The Peterson Automotive Museum, 1:pm tour

GEM will meet at the Peterson Museum at 1:pm, and tour the newly remodeled Peterson

Automotive Museum. The museum has just reopened in December after under gone a

substantial renovation that is said to be spectacular. The museum has also opened up

the public what they refer to as The Vault.

The Peterson Museum rotates its automotive displays throughout the year. The Vault is the

underground storage area where they keep all of the other cars they own that are not

being displayed in the museum.

Viewing The Vault has an additional charge to that of the museum tour. But it is one tour

there that I can’t wait to take.

March 5, Saturday. The LA Lit Show, LAX Hilton Hotel, 9:am

Some of you may have wondered why I suggested we meet for the museum tour at 1:pm.

Well, every year Los Angeles hosts an event called the LA Literature Show, or Lit Show for

short. This is a Porsche event that bring Porsche-heads in from all over the country. A room

of venders will offer everything from owner manuals and toys to steering wheels and

chrome items for your Porsche, whether new or old. Three hours is plenty of time to shop

Porsche paraphernalia and make it over to the Peterson for a tour !

April 30, Saturday. Ladies’ Drive to Descanso Gardens in La Canada

The renowned Descanso gardens have delighted millions. This botanical estate was

created by Los Angeles newpaper magnate, Elias Boddy after he bought-out nurseries

from Japanese families who were being disposed to Japanese internment camps in the

early 1940s. Acquiring as many as 100,000 camellias. With the two Japanese nurseries he

now owned he began creating a Japanese tea garden on his La Canada estate. He named

it Rancho Descanso meaning “ Ranch of Repose (or Restfulness) ”.

The estate was later deeded to the County of Los Angeles and opened to the public as

Descanso Gardens. I guess it has a lot of plants or something there.

May 21, Saturday. The Vintage V-12 in Tehachapi

This drive will take us into the Tehachapi area. This shop rebuilds war-era air-craft

engines. 70 years ago these engines powered the fastest planes of WWII. Hopefully we

will be fortune enough to see some of these old Allison, Rolls, and Daimler beauties from

the inside, out.

And of course there will be a stop at the BBQ restaurant to fill our gullets.

June 18, Saturday. The Plane Crazy Event at the Mojave Air/Space Port

Every third Saturday of the month the Mojave Air & Space Port host a fly in and static

display on the airport runway. However, this is no typical airport and you never know

what is going to be shown on the runway. This is the home of many the California aero

space companies, including such well known names as Scaled Composites, XCOR Aero

Space, and Virgin Galactic Industries.

Not to mention the fascinating Airliner grave yard that is the home of hundreds of out-of-

service passenger jet liners that is positioned as a backdrop to the Mojave runway. They

even have an airport café that overlooks all of the activates on the flight-line.

July (TBD), Saturday. The Gathering of Friends car show in San Luis Obispo

The Gathering of Friends event is an all European car show and BBQ which happens on

the lawn of Laguna Lake golf course. Not to be confused with San Luis Concours at the

Madonna Inn which occurs a month early, this event features only gorgeous European

automobiles and motorcycles, both new and vintage models.

We will get there with a spirited drive over Hwy 58 West !! A BBQ fund raising event is

also offered. So bring a bottle of wine to help wash that BBQ Tri-tip down with.

Many of our GEM members are

Walter Glockler was a Volkswagen (among other

marques) dealer in Frankfurt, Germany. Being a racer

himself, and knowing of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche's

exploits with Auto Union and Cisitalia Grand Prix cars,

he quickly saw the potential contained in Dr. Porsche's

first post-war effort, the model 356.

The Glockler-Porsches were 'specials' in that they were individually hand-built with each successive racecar

integrating lessons learned from previous iterations. The first two Glockler-Porsches were designed by Hermann

Ramelow, who using modified 356 underpinnings attached to custom-fabricated tube-frames of his own design.

They all sported aluminum bodies designed and built by C. W. Weidenhausen. The first two were single-seaters

with the engine and transaxle rotated 180 degrees so that the engine was mounted amidships. However,

switching the engine location from the 356's rear-engined layout for better weight distribution also caused

handling problems with the trailing arm (which initially became leading arm) suspension design.

Because they could not fully solve the leading-arm suspension's handling problems (primarily, excessive toe-in

under braking), they returned to the rear-engined chassis architecture for the third Glockler-Porsche (pictured).

The first Glockler Specials were based on the early Porsche 356 small-bore architecture. Their 1,086 cc engine size

allowed them to compete in the under 1,100 cc categories. These engines, running on gasoline, put out a modest

50 hp. Running on alcohol, the small-bore engine put out just over 60 hp.

The second Glockler-Porsche was built using a 1,500 cc Porsche engine that, again on alcohol, put out over 80 hp.

The third Glockler-Porsche also used a 1,488 cc Porsche engine, but due to modifications by the Porsche factory, it

put out 86 h.p.

The first two Glockler-Porsches weighed under 1,000 lbs. The third, because it was a two-seater, built on a

standard 356 cabriolet floorpan, weighed just over 1,100 lbs. Dr. Porsche was impressed enough with quality of

design, craftsmanship, and performance of the Glockler specials that he agreed to have them labeled as Porsches,

and further, that he incorporated many of the mid-engined Glockler specials' design elements into his first

production racecar, the Porsche 550.

Most Porsche aficionados agree that it was Max Hoffman, who convinced Dr. Porsche to build the Porsche 356

Speedster: many also claim he did so because he was so impressed with Glockler-Porsche #3 which he bought

from Swiss Porsche importer, Hans Stanek and imported to race in the U.S.

familiar with the former Greg Fullmer Porsche Glockler 914/6 GT. The

914/6 GT is highly modified 914 with loads of racing upgrades which

made it very competitive. Porsche in conjunction with Walter Glocker

built several of these GTs as factory racers for many of the most well

known racing circuits in Europe. In 1970 Porsche entered the 914/6 GT

in the 24 hours of Le Mans where it won its class and took 6th over-all.

Petersen Automotive Museum Release

After a 14-month total transformation that shrouded the exterior with ribbons of stainless steel and an interior packed with priceless vehicles

and cutting-edge technology, the Petersen Automotive Museum at the gateway of Los Angeles' famed Museum Row has reopened on time, on

budget and packed with hundreds of new sites, sounds and experiences for visitors of all ages. Displays include some of history's most breath-

taking collector cars, championship winning race cars, groundbreaking art cars, famous Hollywood vehicles, seminal motorcycles and more.

"I am proud to announce that the new Petersen Automotive Museum is open on schedule, on budget and with interior and exterior designs

that are even more stunning then the concept renderings – and that is a rare feat in both the architecture and museum worlds," said Executive

Director Terry Karges. "Thanks to the efforts of Kohn Pedersen Fox, Matt Construction, A. Zahner Company, The Scenic Route and our

incredible Petersen team, we have transformed a building that was once an old department store into one of the most groundbreaking

structures in Los Angeles. What's inside is just as stunning, including a three-story spiral staircase that transports visitors through 25 galleries

representing the history, industry and artistry of the automobile."

The new Petersen Automotive Museum now has three full floors of content with 95,000 square feet of exhibit space. Guests are invited to

enter the museum through either the parking structure off Fairfax or the new entrance on famed Wilshire Boulevard. There they can see

several display vehicles in the David and Ginny Sydorick Grand Concourse, purchase tickets, and take an elevator to the third floor, where the

experience begins.

The History Floor (3) will help visitors dive into nostalgia as they explore the multi-faceted history of the automobile. "Concept Cars as Art" in

the Audrey and Martin Gruss Foundation Gallery shows what the future looked like in the 1950s and 60s, while the Hollywood Gallery includes

the Batmobile, the Magnum P.I. Ferrari, several vehicles from Spectre – the latest James Bond movie, the Pontiac Aztec from Breaking Bad and

other fan favorites. Also featured on the third floor is the pivotal exhibit "Southern California: A Region in Motion" in the Southland Gallery,

presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California, which uses interactive video content to show how Los Angeles grew out, instead of

up, like most cities.

As visitors descend the staircase to the Industry Floor (2), they can explore the diversity of automotive design and technology and see cars that

have been modified for speed and efficiency. Learn what it's like to work in the car industry and watch automotive design students as they

design the next generation of transportation.

One of the most visually stunning displays in the museum is the Precious Metal exhibit in the Bruce Meyer Family Gallery presented by Rolex, a

gathering of the world's rarest and most exotic cars – all finished in silver. Just a few samples of the incredible vehicles in this gallery include a

1995 McLaren F1, the 1959 Chevrolet Corvette XP-87 Stingray designed, driven and raced by GM President of Design Bill Mitchell, the 1964

Aston Martin DB5 driven by James Bond in the movie Goldfinger, a stunning 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic by Ghia, a 1967 Ferrari 625/250 Testa

Rossa by Scaglietti known as one of the most winning Ferraris of its time, and a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner driven by Juan-Manuel

Fangio and Stirling Moss.

11

The Pixar Cars Mechanical Institute features a life-size Lightning McQueen and uses augmented reality technology to tech children how cars

really work, starring their favorite characters from the Cars movies on Carspad tablets. At the Art Center College of Design Studio in the

Mullin Design Gallery, visitors can watch students from the world's most respected transportation design program sketch and mold the next

generation of vehicular transport. The Industry Professionals exhibit in the Roeder-Harman Gallery presented by AIG in partnership with

Grundy Insurance features interviews with the engineers, designers, marketers and executives who take cars from design to reality – all

hosted by Jay Leno. The Alternative Power exhibit, presented by Landi Renzo, showcases the history and future of alternative fuel vehicles –

from early 20th century steam and electric cars to the latest in hybrid, CNG and fuel cell technology.

The Production Gallery presented by Maserati features "Made in Italy: Design to Line," an exhibit showcasing how a production luxury car

goes from rendering to model to finished vehicle. Continue down the hall and visitors can visit the High Performance Road Cars exhibit pre-

sented by Ford Motor Company, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ford's historic win at LeMans with the museum's GT40 MkIII alongside

the all-new Ford GT supercar. From there fans can step into the winner's circle in the Motorsports exhibit in the Charles Nearburg Family

Gallery presented by Lucas Oil Products, featuring some of the fastest and most seminal race cars of all time, backed by a 134-foot, 180-

degree projection wall immersing visitors in the sights and sounds of these incredible cars on the track. Directly behind the Motorsports

exhibit is the Forza Motorsport Racing Experience, where fans can get behind the wheel of a variety of vehicles and try their hand at racing

on driving rigs running the latest version of Microsoft's racing simulator.

From the Driving Gallery, visitors step out of the four-wheeled world and into the Motorcycles Exhibit in the Richard Varner Family Gallery,

presented by Bonnier Motorcycle Group. This exhibit features nearly two dozen of the fastest, rarest, most beautiful or sometimes oddest

two-wheeled vehicles from history. Finally, the second floor features a gallery that bears the name of the brand that got Robert E. Petersen

his start – the Hot Rod Gallery, presented by TEN – The Enthusiast Network. This exhibit celebrates Hot Rod Magazine, Petersen's first publi-

cation, along with the cars featured in the magazine over the years, artifacts from Petersen's life and a selection of wildly customized cars –

from iconic customs (the Hirohata Merc and Billy Gibbons' "CadZZilla") to lowriders, roadsters and race cars.

One last trip down the grand staircase and visitors will find themselves on the Peter and Merle Mullin Artistry Floor (1), where they can

discover the most artfully designed vehicles from history, often regarded as rolling sculpture. Explore how the automobile has been

interpreted as the subject of fine art and even used as a canvas for artistic expression. The Mullin Grand Salon features the exhibit Artistry

of the Automobile, featuring some of the finest coachbuilt cars of the art deco era, from the 1936 Type 57sc Bugatti Atlantic to the 1938

Talbot-Lago T150C SS Figoni et Falaschi Teardrop, and more. This gallery also houses a 166-foot panoramic display wall displaying motion

graphic art inspired by the "golden ratio," a design standard often used in Art Deco era design.

From the Mullin Grand Salon, visitors can move to the Ken and Dayle Roath Gallery, featuring a curated display of cover art from the

106-year history of Westways Magazine, the print publication of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Never before has such a

collection been assembled and displayed in one place.

Finally, the last exhibit on the top-to-bottom tour is also the first one visitors see upon entering the museum – BMW Art Cars in the Armand

Hammer Foundation Gallery, presented by BMW of North America. The BMW Art Car program was launched by French auctioneer/racer

Hervé Poulain, who commissioned Alexander Calder to design the livery of a 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL. The car was campaigned at the 1975 24

Hours of Le Mans by Sam Posey, Jean Guichet and Hervé Poulain and was one of Calder's last works. Also on display is the 1995 BMW 850

CSi designed by highly influential British artist David Hockney, who now lives a few miles from the Petersen, as well as the 2008 BMW Z4

used by South African artist Robin Rhode for the "Expression Of Joy" project. Rhode utilized the car as an internal-combustion paint brush:

He remotely activated paint sprayers directed onto the tires as the Z4 drove over a large canvas. A piece of the Expression of Joy canvas is

displayed on the wall in the Hammer Foundation Gallery, as are images and information on all 17 BMW Art Cars.

A Message from our President

Hello Golden Empire region.

For any of you that don't already know me, my name is

Loren Stumbaugh. I will be the president for Golden Empire

region for the 2016 year and I'm hoping that 2016 will bring

many good things to you and the Golden Empire Region.

Let me give you a little history about myself and my association with both Porsche and PCA.

My very first Porsche was a 1987 guards red 924S that I purchased new, for my very first ex-wife.

At the time I did not know much about Porsches, I was a Chevy man. But that was the car that did me in, I had been bitten by the Porsche

bug. The cutesy little four cylinder foreign job gave my 85 IROC Z-28 a true run for the money. I no longer craved upgrading to a Corvette.

I wanted/needed another Porsche of my own.

Soon after purchase, Porsche started sending me it's Christophrous magazine. This was at the time or Porsche was developing their

legendary 959 supercar, A car that I craved dearly but knew I would never possess. But I was impressed how throughout Porsches history

it's racing technology trickle down to many of it's street cars, such as all wheel drive and twin turbos.

A couple years later I was bitten again. This time, by a neglected, used and abused, 1972 911t Targa beater. It needed some serious

attention just to bring it up to a driver. I did what I could and opened my wallet for the rest. This was my car, my Porsche, I loved driving

that car. That was until the alternator went south on I-10, in the middle of the desert, between life and Indio, in the middle of summer.

I had my baby towed to the Porsche dealer in Indio.

It was there that I found Porsche number three, a beautiful Guards Red 1986 928S. And as if to one up my broken beater 911, the 928S had

working, cold, air conditioning. And after a few swipes of the pen, I was able to drive it home that day. It was an amazing car, fast and

luxurious.

The 928 served me well until a divorce from ex #2 resulted in it's sale. I still miss the feeling of her in my hands. The 928S, not my ex.

After the divorce, while shopping for my next Porsche, I found a real keeper, my soon to be wife, Anna.

Soon after, I found my next Porsche, a Basalt Metallic Carrera 4 Cabriolet. When Anna gave it a big thumbs up, I knew she was something

special, an enabler.

It was in 2007 that I first became aware of PCA. In 2009 I joined. After missing a meeting in late 2009, I was informed that I have been ap-

pointed membership chairman for the upcoming year, A position that I have held and tremendously enjoyed until being elected president

for 2016.

Anna soon showed her enabling prowess with a firm "buy it" when we went to look at a 1976 914 that had set neglected for over two

decades.

Anna then gave the nod to a basket case in the form of a European 1970 Pastel Blue 911t Targa with a Sportomatic. That car ended up

going east before I had a chance to do much more than disassemble it and box up the parts.

Next, Anna told me that I was going to trade the 2006 Cabriolet for a white and black 2007 Carrera S with the factory Aero kit. I wasn't

really even given a choice in the matter.

Next was a 2013 Atlas Gray Boxster S that sadly only spent a minute in our garage. Medical situations forced Anna to reevaluate

our Porsche needs. She calmly, and matter of factually decided that both of our Porsches, her Boxster S, and my Carrera S both had to go.

In their places were to be a limited edition Volkswagen GSR Beetle for her, and for me, a 2008 Macadamia Metallic

Turbo 911 Carrera Cabriolet. She picked them both, and again, I had very little to say in the matter.

My wife is an enabler, and I am a lucky man.

Janis Joplin's psychedelic Porsche sold for $1.76 million Thursday night at RM Sotheby's "Driven By Disruption" car auction in New York. The

iconic vehicle – a pearl-white 1965 Porsche 365c 1600 Cabriolet decked out with a kaleidoscopic Flower Power paint job – was expected to

bring between $400,000 and $600,000, CNN reports.

Joplin purchased the Porsche secondhand in 1968, and Big Brother and the Holding Company roadie Dave Richards painted the iconic

"History of the Universe" mural, which features images of the band members among butterflies and jellyfish. Joplin owned the vehicle until

her death in October 1970, and the Porsche has been displayed at Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the past two decades.

"Janis drove everywhere, all around San Francisco and down to Los Angeles when she was recording there," Joplin's sister and biographer

Laura told Sotheby's in the auction listing. "Wherever Janis went in the car, her fans recognized it. When she parked it and returned, there

was always at least one note under the wipers."

Oh Lord, Wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
