Dear Residents of Doddington

Another year has gone by and Doddington remains a thriving village with fantastic community spirit, evidence of which can be seen all around the village. At Christmas Doddington is particularly amazing with our spectacular Christmas Lights and the magical Carnival Committee’s Santa Run where Santa visits every street in the village taking the time to talk to all the children he meets.

Now winter is firmly here, please take care out and about, both on foot and in the car. Give yourself an extra 10 minutes travel time and be careful on cold days, black ice can go unnoticed and can easily be the cause of a nasty fall. Don’t forget about the elderly and more vulnerable, be a good neighbour and keep an eye out for signs that there maybe something wrong.

The Diary continues to be delivered to over 1000 properties in Doddington and this is thanks to our volunteer deliverers and to everyone who advertises in the magazine. If you would like to support this valuable village asset by advertising your business, please contact us or check out our webpage www.doddingtondiary.co.uk for all the details about size and costings of adverts.

If you know someone who doesn’t receive the Diary each month or maybe you would prefer a digital copy sent directly to your email, go to our webpage and follow the ‘subscribe’ link, completing your details. The Diary will be sent to you on the 1st of every month, ensuring no one need miss out on all the news!

The Diary Team would like to wish all its readers a happy and prosperous 2019!

Best wishesThe Doddington Diary Team

Wow! What another spectacular ‘Switch On’, a small hiccup, but huge cheers when the lights came on.

The committee would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone involved.

This year we extended the display further down the High Street, all thanks to your generous donations.

Next year we plan to stretch all the way to Policeman’s Corner.

Santa was busy as usual and photographs were taken by Roger Newark whilst the children put in their requests with Santa.

We finished the year of fundraising off with a children’s party on 20th December.

The committee would like to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.

The committee have been busy putting plans into action to change the broken fencing between the old bowling green and the cricket ground. A new hedge will be planted in its place which has the benefit of requiring little maintenance whilst looking attractive and hopefully will also attract more wildlife to the ground. At the same time the old fence was taken down, we have made repairs to the fence around the playground. There is still lots of work to be done, but we are very fortunate to have a dedicated groundsman to drive the project forward, so that eventually the Recreation Ground will not only be a high-quality sports ground but also an inviting place to visit or take a walk. The monthly prize Bingo continues to be popular taking place every second Thursday of the month along with our themed Family Bingo which takes place on specified Saturday mornings throughout the year. Thank you to everyone who has attended Bingo in 2018, the profit we receive from these events is essential to the upkeep and improvements which we need to make. Our next fundraising event is QUIZ NIGHT on Saturday 23rd February at 7pm, £7.50 per person which includes a ‘bangers & mash’ supper. Please phone 07816359988 or email doddingtonrec@gmail to book your team. Please keep posted to our Facebook page @doddingtonpavilion and the Diary for details of all our upcoming events. The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on Thursday 3rd January at 7pm in the Pavilion, we are a small friendly team who are always looking for new members. If you have a little time to spare and would like to help, please come along to our meeting.

Happy New Year from the Doddington Village Sports and Carnival committee.

December was a busy month for the committee as we had our annual visit from Santa. We made our way around the whole village over 3 nights and we hope you had chance to see him. Santa’s helpers were full of festive cheer and it was a fantastic weekend! Thanks to those who supplied us with food and drink on our way round.

The theme for the 2019 Carnival has not yet been announced so keep on eye on our website www.doddingtoncarnival.co.uk and our Facebook page Doddington Village Sports and Carnival committee for any upcoming news on this.

If you are interested in joining the committee and being part of the team, then please get in touch and come along to the monthly meetings which take place on the second Tuesday of every month at 8pm in the Church Rooms.

JUNE BULLETIN FROM CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

Think twice before jumping into water this summer Would you jump into a river, lake or any other open waterway on a hot sunny day? Do you know what hazards lie beneath the water? Or how cold the water is? Your fire service has pledged to deliver water safety education to every school in Cambridge-shire following the tragic death of a teenage boy last summer. But there is only so much we can do and we’re calling on parents, carers and peers to talk each other about water safety. Some things to remember: You do not know what hazards lie beneath the surface of rivers, lakes, canals, etc. Strong undercurrents can be tough to conquer, even if you know how to swim

Cambridgeshire’s waterways are cold – even on the hottest days of the year – and this has a dramatic effect on your body’s ability to swim and get yourself out of trouble, should you get stuck. If someone is in trouble, call 999 immediately. Do not hesitate to call the emergency services and give clear details of your location.

For the latest news, incidents and safety advice, or to contact us, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk . Find us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Call 01480 444500 for enquiries.

Doddington W.I.The December meeting was a combined Annual Meeting and a Christmas party. Two visitors, Becky Gamble and Gill Osler were welcomed. Since the last meeting there had been two successful events - the Bingo and afternoon Tea and the Christmas Lights Table-top Sale which sold crafts and had paper marbling for children, both in aid of the village sign.Various annual reports were given and Margaret Patterson announced the results of the competitions. The winner, receiving the cup, was Margaret Neesom with 203 points, second was Anne Chambers with 199 points and Marjorie Bishop came third with 196 points. Sally Shortland was elected the President for 2019.

The party began with Mr. Guy Pidsley (as Father Christmas) dressed in his costume with real white beard and hair speaking about the Myths of Santa Claus, how it all started and today’s customs. He really enjoys his work but has to keep up-to-date with the latest toys. He was thanked by Valerie Gobie. Father Christmas then distributed the Secret Santa presents. Everyone then enjoyed puddings and cheeseboard served by the Committee. There were three winners of this month’s competition - Mary Woolfall, Suzanne Tucker and Janine Woodhams all receiving 20 points. There is no meeting in January and the February meeting will have Kyanne Taylor with a demonstration of Street Dancing. The competition will be “L” for Lavender. New members and visitors are always welcome. Contact Gemma Watts (740751) for details.

Street Lighting IssuesThe Council has identified a few areas within the village which will be enhanced by the installation of additional lighting. These areas include the school entrance, Ingles Lane/Church Lane and the car park at the Abbey Recreation Ground. The lighting contractors will be asked to provide an estimate of costs. The contractors will also be revisiting the village to make good those lights currently showing a fault.

PotholesRepresentations are being made to Cambridgeshire County Council that, in a number of cases, the recent repair work made to various potholes within the village are breaking up.

The Parish Council hope that you have all had a very Merry Christmas and wish everyone a Peaceful, Healthy and Happy New Year.

Doddington Diary January 2019

1st Doddington Scout Group During December our Beavers and Cubs had Christmas sleepovers with all being involved in making their Christmas Dinner, going out on a hike and enjoying a campfire too.

Before the end of term, the Beavers worked to earn their safety badge, learning about water safety, dangers around the house, the green cross code and railway safety. They went bowling on their last night of term.

The Cubs undertook several activities for Disability Awareness, including drawing a picture with their foot, and learning some sign language and braille. The enjoyed bowling and laser tag on their last night of term.

At the start of December our Scouts setup and ran a Beetle Drive at the Scout Hall. We had 48 people all frantically rolling dice and trying to create their Beetle first…it was quite competitive, and great fun! The Scouts did a great job with the cooking for the evening too and had a cardboard box sleepover in the hall that night too. The following week they all enjoyed indoor climbing at Fenrock.

For fundraising, we entered into the festive spirit and sung Christmas songs in Tesco in March and raised a great amount – thank you to the generous Tesco shoppers, and to Tesco for enabling the group to do this.

We have lots planned for 2019 – more fundraising, and camps! Happy New Year everyone!

Contact us if you would like to become a volunteer with the group, or if have a child interested in joining. [email protected] / www.facebook.com/DoddingtonScouts / www.doddingtonscouts.org.uk

Doddington Street PrideHappy New Year to you all!We missed the deadline for an article in the December issue of the Diary, mainly due to the fact that we spent so much time working on our ponds’ project. You may remember that we had been awarded a grant to restore the ponds at the bottom of Primrose Hill. We worked over 3 Saturdays, removing reeds, cutting back trees, removing debris, re-opening drainage channels and generally re-shaping the ponds so they have a chance to provide a better wildlife habitat. The photos show how we progressed each week.

We will leave the ponds to settle over the winter, and in the early spring we will return to finish off the landscaping work, which will hopefully provide the finishing touches to a really pleasant spot for the village. We have been given permission to use the remainder of our grant to do this work, although we will wait until a later edition of the Diary to tell you precisely what we are doing. Thanks to everyone who has been involved in the restoration project so far, it has been a great effort. That said, anyone else who would like to become involved only needs to let us at Doddington Street Pride know and you would be very welcome. Having got the bug on this first restoration project, there are plenty other ponds around the village that need attention and we are keen to carry on with the work we have started. If you would like to join our group, either just turn up to our regular litter pick (we meet on the first Saturday of every month at 2pm at the Clock Tower) or email Phil at [email protected] who will give you details of our activities.

Doddington Diary January 2019

Doddington 100 Years Ago by David Edwards

January 1919Doddington’s only Prisoner of War returned home.

Pte Charles Franklin of the 2nd Bn Suffolk Regiment had been captured on 26th August, 1914 at Le Cateau during the British Army’s retreat from Mons in the first few weeks of the war. He was said to look well and though he had experienced rough treatment he had been kept in comparatively good health, mainly through the parcels and money sent to him by the Doddington War Worker’s Committee, which had been received regularly.

Charles was the son of Mrs Susannah Canham of High Street. His brother Albert had been killed in action in 1917.

On New Year’s Day an entertainment was organized for the staff of the Workhouse and their friends by the Master and Matron, Mr and Mrs J Hill. Over 30 were present and dancing and singing continued until a late hour.

A Whist Drive was held in the Church Rooms and the £5 10s funds raised were retained with the object of forming a club. Mr GA Palmer being the temporary treasurer until a formal committee was appointed.

A group from March arranged an entertainment for the inmates of the Workhouse with music and singing. Oranges, sweets and chocolates were presented to the women and children, and tobacco and wine to the men.

Some more Doddington men who served during the First World War:

Robert Buck, Charles German, Albert W Giles, John A Harding, Alfred Hatch, Frank Heaps, George W Jones (later Sub-Postmaster), Hugh Jones, George W Kingham, Joseph Ladds, George Marchant, Herbert S Mee, Edward Munden, Herbert S Murfitt, G Harold Palmer, William Pooley, Edward J Read, George Southon, Ellis Ward, Albert Waterfall, Herbert W Welcher, Arthur C Yorke.

Due to the destruction of many records of First World War servicemen during bombing in the Second World War, it is not possible to produce a fully comprehensive list of all those from the village who served.

To be continued....
