January 14, 2018 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, I recently came across a fascinating article in the National Catholic Register entitled, “Why these Catholic Converts Remain.” It asks a simple question: in spite of various challenges and even scandals in the Church, why do these converts choose to continue being Catholic? One individual who was interviewed, Jeff Barefoot, gave this powerful testimony: “You can go to the best of Protestant churches and get the best of the word of God there … but the Catholic church is the only place where you can get the word of God, followed by eating and drinking the Body and Blood of the Word of God.” Jeff is an attorney, CPA and founder of a wealth management firm in Perrysburg, OH. “Like Peter said in John 6, ‘Where are we going to go?’” To leave the Church because of something the Pope or any priest said or did, or because of a crisis that strikes at the truth of the faith is simply not feasible.” Raised in a nominally Protestant family, Barefoot went to Unitarian, Congregationalist, Grace Brethren, United Methodist and Missouri Synod-Lutheran churches before becoming Catholic in 2002. He said a combination of mystery and grace drew him to the faith, but it was understanding the Church’s authority that opened the door to conversion. He said, “There was never a sense that I had any authority other than myself. … You don’t come into the Catholic church unless you’re really convinced of its authority and truth.” As a convert to the Catholic Christian faith myself, I find testimonies like Jeff’s, and so many others, both fascinating and hopeful. Truth does exist and it exists within the Roman Catholic Church! As we begin this season of Ordinary Time, we might begin with the very same question that the NCR article asked some Catholic converts: ‘Why do you choose to remain Catholic?’ For many of us it is because we have been Catholic all of our lives and there is nothing else that we could, or want, to be. For others it is because of a powerful conversion that we experienced and are convinced that Jesus called us into His Church. Whatever our reason, we are all members of the Body of Christ, the Church. St. Paul, in the second reading for this weekend’s Mass, taken from is first letter to the Corinthians says, “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with Him.” Each of us has a vital role to play in the Body of Christ, spiritually, monetarily and through generous stewardship of our time and talent. As we begin this new year together, let us pray for ourselves and for our entire parish community that we all might be active, prayerful and generous members of Christ’s Body, the Church, in spite of our many flaws. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

I recently came across a fascinating article in the National Catholic Register entitled, “Why these Catholic Converts Remain.” It asks a

simple question: in spite of various challenges and even scandals in the Church, why do these converts choose to continue being Catholic?

One individual who was interviewed, Jeff Barefoot, gave this powerful testimony: “You can go to the best of Protestant churches and get the

best of the word of God there … but the Catholic church is the only place where you can get the word of God, followed by eating and

drinking the Body and Blood of the Word of God.” Jeff is an attorney, CPA and founder of a wealth management firm in Perrysburg, OH.

“Like Peter said in John 6, ‘Where are we going to go?’” To leave the Church because of something the Pope or any priest said or did, or

because of a crisis that strikes at the truth of the faith is simply not feasible.” Raised in a nominally Protestant family, Barefoot went to

Unitarian, Congregationalist, Grace Brethren, United Methodist and Missouri Synod-Lutheran churches before becoming Catholic in 2002.

He said a combination of mystery and grace drew him to the faith, but it was understanding the Church’s authority that opened the door to

conversion. He said, “There was never a sense that I had any authority other than myself. … You don’t come into the Catholic church unless

you’re really convinced of its authority and truth.” As a convert to the Catholic Christian faith myself, I find testimonies like Jeff’s, and so

many others, both fascinating and hopeful. Truth does exist and it exists within the Roman Catholic Church!

As we begin this season of Ordinary Time, we might begin with the very same question that the NCR article asked some Catholic converts:

‘Why do you choose to remain Catholic?’ For many of us it is because we have been Catholic all of our lives and there is nothing else that we

could, or want, to be. For others it is because of a powerful conversion that we experienced and are convinced that Jesus called us into His

Church. Whatever our reason, we are all members of the Body of Christ, the Church. St. Paul, in the second reading for this weekend’s

Mass, taken from is first letter to the Corinthians says, “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But whoever is joined to

the Lord becomes one Spirit with Him.” Each of us has a vital role to play in the Body of Christ, spiritually, monetarily and through generous

stewardship of our time and talent. As we begin this new year together, let us pray for ourselves and for our entire parish community that we

all might be active, prayerful and generous members of Christ’s Body, the Church, in spite of our many flaws. She is, after all, the Bride of

Christ!

Queridos Parroquinanos,

Glad You

Asked!

By

Deacon

Derrel Craig

We generally find it easy to give praise and thanks to God when all things in our lives are going well and orderly. But, do we have the spiritual stamina to offer that same praise and thanksgiving in the face of adversity?

If we truly believe that God has a purpose for each and every one of us and uses us to the presentation of His will to earth as it is in heaven, then we must believe that God uses everything in our lives to that end. But very often, when things are not going so well for us, when we suffer the loss of a loved one or we suffer a debilitat-ing illness, it is easy for us to turn our focus inward and ask, "why me?" God might respond to that question with, "why not you?" God's love works through us in both the good and bad of our lives and the challenge is for us is to turn to God asking for the insight and the intestinal fortitude to help us help Him through our adversity. I can think of no greater recent example than that offered to us by Fr. Jim Lee, Pastor of St. Michael Parish. Fr. Jim was recently diagnosed with the debilitating disease of ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. Throughout his life, Fr. Jim has lovingly touched the lives of thousands of people and in his goodness, he might have been left to ask that question, "why me?" Instead, Fr. Jim seeks to find the grace in his adversity, choosing instead of being bed ridden to serving God's Kingdom here on earth by continuing as long as he is able to shepherd his parishioners. That is the kind of grace that God invites all of us through the adversity of our lives. So, our challenge, our invitation today and every day is to seek God's grace in the adversity of our lives by looking to the cross and meditating on His ultimate sacrifice for us. When we find ourselves turning inward and focusing on the obsta-cles that inevitably cross our paths, pray that God grant us the spiritual stamina to face the adversity, seeking His grace al-lowing Him to work through us and our trials to exemplify God's love in our world. Seek always the grace in adversity.

For the moment, I am glad you asked.

Will you Say a Prayer?

When you’re in the Adoration Chapel, please take a copy of the bulletin

with the prayer list with you (below) … or find a copy of this list posted

in the Chapel, and say a prayer for the sick and infirm in our parish

family. This can be accomplished by simply saying, ‘Please, Lord, keep

the people on this list near You and Your will be done,’ or, quietly read

each name to yourself and say, ‘Lord, please show mercy on these people

who are sick.’

By doing this each time you’re in the Chapel, there will be prayers

going heavenward for each and every person on this list,

24-hours a day, 365 days a year.
