happY New Year and welcome to 2015. Thanks to everyone who helped make the Change of Watch such a spec-tacular event. Special thanks to Tom and his staff, and Kathy Milam and Phyllis Cardosi for all of the table treatments. The Boat Parade was a success thanks to IEYC and all of their work put-ting on this event.

I welcome the new Board of Directors and your new Bridge. We will do our best to provide the club a con-tinuing positive direction for 2015.

I am looking forward to the New Year at CYC. We have experienced a lot of growth in the club over the last several years and I am confident it will continue. Our growth has not just been new members (always want more); we have grown in club usage, the sailing camps, the youth sailing programs, the Cruisers, the Gulls, the Bow Chasers and increased the attendance at our special events (Chili Cook-off, Chowdah Cook-off, Rock the Dock parties), and that brings more members and friends to the club more often.

As we move into 2015 there are still some projects that Vice Commodore Cardosi will take over to com-plete in the first quarter of the year. Rear Commodore Ed Proefke has new events as well as our regular events planned for the year. Fleet Captain Skip Moore has our marina full and we have a growing waiting list.

Look forward to seeing and visiting with you at the club. Have a fun and safe New Year.

happY New Year from your 2015 House and Grounds chairper-son and our entire club management and staff.

Last year was a good one for our club financially and for improve-ments to our building and property. We plan to continue work in 2015 to enhance our club property for our continued enjoy-ment. Of course, the improvements must also make financial sense for the club. As the New Year pro-gresses there will be more news on the work being done.

We have recently made changes and improve-

ments to our staff and management team. Danielle Largent, our Food and Beverage Manager, will add staff and training as needed throughout the year. Danielle has added many new wines and drink spe-cials for our enjoyment in 2014 and will continue to do so in 2015. We will work to pair certain wines with Chef John’s entrees to enhance your palate and dining experience.

I continue to hear our food and service is top notch! Our entire service staff and kitchen team promises to wow you even more in 2015. Tom and Danielle are com-mitted to providing the best dining and club experience you can enjoy anywhere!

I personally look forward to a great year and my com-mitment is to be the best vice commodore possible! I will be working with a great Bridge and Board in 2015, so I look forward to great success!

Happy New Year!

We resume play beginning Thursday, January 8, for nine holes at the Biltmore on Indian Rocks Road. We play in the afternoons every other Thursday after that through May.

welCome to 2015! As we experienced the Change of

Watch on December 6th with our CYC traditions and flag ceremony, many of us took on new activities and responsibili-ties. Congratulations to Immediate Past Commodore Tish Wold for her great year as commodore. I am looking forward to working with the Board of Directors and all of the committees, and chairing the Entertainment Committee in 2015 to continue the fun that CYC is known for.

n n n n

The Lighted Holiday Boat Parade brought a packed house to CYC on December 13th. The weather was per-fect for the parade and both the main dining room and the dry dock were booked with parties. And again for New Year’s Eve, we experienced a full house. Chef John and the crew prepared and served a fabulous meal and the Dazzlers entertained us into the morning.

n n n n

January is shaping up to be a month of fun and entertainment. We will bring Karaoke to CYC on January 10th, so bring your friends and croon with your fellow members. Plan to bring

your favorite chili to the Chili Cook-off on January 18th.

Set up time starts at 1 p.m., and you can start tasting and judging the chili creations at 2 p.m.

n n n n

On January 24th, CYC will transform

into a Vegas nightclub for a Rat Pack Party. Put on your best party clothes and come party like Frank, Dean and Sammy would expect.

n n n n

Of course we also have the football playoff schedule this month finishing off with the Super Bowl on Sun-

day February 1st. Join your fel-low football fans at the Tiki Bar to watch the games and cheer on your favorite team.

Thank you to all who support-ed the club in 2014 as we look

forward to a great 2015 at CYC.

as Your New cruise directors, we would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday sea-son. We also want to thank Cliff and Donna Wyatt for their support and dedication to the Cruisers group. Great job Cliff and Donna!!!

As a matter of introduction, we have been mem-bers of CYC and the Cruisers for 16 years and have just completed a three-year, 7,000-mile adventure called the Great Loop on the dARrF V, our cruising home away from home.

Our first CYC cruise of 2015 will be to Treasure Island Yacht Club January 9–11. Paul and Judy Pennock have agreed to be our gracious hosts – thank you! Please call Virginia to make your reservations.

We have started planning our 2015 cruise schedule and will send out a draft before our January meet-ing, which will be on Wednesday the 14th. At this meeting we will be discussing and finalizing the 2015 cruising schedule and other activities, so please come and provide your input and help us kick off our 2015 cruising season. LET’S KEEP THE CRUISES COMING!!!

happy New Year! I’m look-ing forward to a wonderful New Year on the docks where all the fun is! All is well on the docks; all slips are leased; and Bright House’s Wi-Fi is 90 percent complete.

Finding Water LeaksTracking down a rainwater leak, especially one that

apparently comes from topside, is often a tricky, difficult job. Most boatyard guys will tell you to start by examin-ing the hardware that’s located above or nearly above the spot where the water is showing up. The thinking here is that improper or worn-out bedding compound under the hardware may be the culprit.

However, if re-bedding a cleat, handrail or antenna mount does not address the drip-drip-drip that’s driving you nuts, try this additional measure. On the exterior of your boat, in the general vicinity of where you believe water may be coming in, temporarily cover every suspi-cious seam, rail landing, cleat base, antenna mount, or whatever with Scotch Safe-Release painter’s tape. Use the wide stuff wherever possible: 2 inches across or even 3 inches should do it.

After you’ve taped off a sufficiently large expanse of cabin side, coach roof or flybridge cowl, adjust a wash-down hose to simulate a heavy rain and blast the entire taped area for 20 minutes or so. If you get no leakage inside your boat afterwards, then you’ve found your leak, at least in the strictly technical sense.

Now begin removing each swathe of tape, one swathe at a time, while working the areas underneath with the hose. Go from the lower spots to the higher-ups, there-by isolating and keeping dry what’s above while you shower away below, slowly but surely homing in on the source of your trouble.

Make sure you devote enough time to deluging each and every taped spot you’ve uncovered (again, we’re talking 20 minutes or so here), and be sure to wait an equally long period of time to see if water has somehow penetrated the interior of your boat after each thor-ough deluging. Where water enters a mysteriously leaky salon, head, or stateroom often has very little to do with where it actually came from.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

the Celestial Navigation Course offered by Capt. Tim Walsh got off to a great start on Nov. 15. Class participants will be looking forward to using their sextants to take Local Apparent Noon sights in January when the class meets again.

Captain Walsh will hold a make-up class for those who missed all or part of the first session. It will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the Board Room.

The course is scheduled to continue through the coming months and will cover noon sights, sun sights, moon sights, star and planet sights, and it will conclude with Polaris sights.

The next regularly scheduled class – after the make-up session – will be Saturday, Jan. 17, also at 10:00 a.m. in the Board Room. This class will be a review of the Local Apparent Noon worksheet, after which the class will go to Indian Rocks Beach and take a Local Apparent Noon sight. the largo high School Madrigal Singers en-tertained us with Christmas Carols at our December 10th ladies luncheon – both serious and hilarious! They were well worth coming out to hear – very talented kids!

Also during that luncheon, the Gulls officers for 2015 – the same slate as 2014 – were installed:

President: Joyce JenkynVice President: Terri FreibergSecretary: Nancy PerrigoTreasurer: Lynne Shackelford

At the December 3rd Gulls Board of Directors meeting, the Gulls voted to raise our annual dues to $15 from$10, effective January 1. Dues notices are being distributed.

On Saturday, De-cember 20th, the Gulls welcomed Santa for our annual Breakfast with Santa. Due to a lack of snow, Santa arrived by boat along with a couple of elves and a big bag of goodies! Several of

Santa’s special elves were involved in the event – fixing very special Christmas pancakes, reading stories, provid-ing music, singing, and assisting with children’s crafts in Santa’s Workshop. Santa came bearing gifts for all the kids, and everyone had a wonderful time!

The Gulls are still working to determine where our gift to the club will be directed for the year, with the funds held in escrow until a decision is made. If you have any good ideas, please let us know.

The year seems to have sped by on the fast track and now we’re ready to start another year! We will continue to meet at 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday in the Gulls Nest for chatting, game playing and staying for lunch, so please come and join us!

The Gulls-sponsored ladies luncheon for January will be held on the 28th starting at 11:30 a.m., and will feature a makeup demonstration presented by a Merle Norman representative. Make your reservations now! Wishing everyone a wonderful 2015!!

Many of us have a clear vision of our retirement years. Yet, a

surprising number of people have no idea how they’ll turn that

vision into reality. The fact is today’s retirement takes more

than savings and Social Security. It requires a financial plan

that addresses your needs, wants and how you’ll pay for them.

That’s where I can help. Together, we’ll create a plan to help

fund the retirement you envision. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

the membership Committee has been busy this month.

Special thanks to Ed Proefke, Chuck and Becky Sajeski, Curtis and Tish Wold and Tom Brusini for volunteering their time to staff the CYC membership booth at the St Petersburg Boat Show. We shared a space with Tarpon Springs Yacht Club at the show. Both clubs benefited from lower expense and enjoyed full staffing of the display.

In the future we hope to partner with more clubs in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs to continue to grow our membership.

We have a winter trial membership program starting January 1 for prospective members. The program will have no initiation fee and a $150 monthly maintenance fee and a $150 minimum food and beverage spend each month for 3 months. If you know of anyone interested in joining CYC who might want to try this program, please put them in touch with Tom or Virginia.

The monthly Membership Committee meeting will be on Wednesday, January 7th at 6:30 p.m. Please plan to attend as we are always looking for ideas and input. We are an open committee, meaning that you are welcome to come once in a while, or every month – there is always something exciting to discuss – and we have been known to stay for dinner after as well.

Happy New Year to All. See you at the club!
