~ TIPS FOR LIVING ~
LOWER YOUR RISK OF FALLING Am I at risk of falling? As people age, poor balance and weak muscles can lead to falls and
fractures. One in 3 older adults will fall each year. Falling can lead to broken
bones, trouble getting around, and other health problems – especially if you
are age 65 or older. Broken hips are a major cause of health problems and
death among older adults. Some older adults also have vision problems or
medical conditions that can make a fall more likely. For example, diabetes
can reduce feeling in your feet and a stroke can affect your balance. These
conditions can make you more likely to fall.
You may be more likely to fall if you: - Have fallen in the past year
- Have a health condition that makes it hard to walk or affects your balance, like diabetes or heart disease
- Have trouble walking, getting up from a chair, or stepping up onto a curb
- Take many different medicines, especially medicines to help you relax or sleep
- Have trouble seeing or have a vision problem like cataracts or glaucoma
Many falls can be prevented. Get active.
Staying active can help you feel better, improve your balance, and make your
legs stronger. Do strengthening activities at least 2 days a week. These include
lifting weights or using resistance bands (long rubber strips that stretch).
Talk with your doctor about using medicines safely.
Using medicines safely can help prevent falls. Some medicines can make you sleepy or dizzy and can cause
you to fall. Take all of your medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) to a doctor or pharmacist and ask
if any of them could increase your risk of falling.
Get your vision checked.
Your vision changes as you get older. Poor vision can increase your chances of falling.
Get your eyes tested at least once a year to make sure you are wearing glasses or contact lenses with the right
prescription strength. Be sure to update your glasses or contacts if your prescription has changed.
Make your home safer
- Have railings put on both sides of all stairs on the inside and outside of your home.
- Have grab bars put inside and outside your bathtub or shower and next to your toilet.
- Remove small rugs or use double-sided tape to keep rugs from slipping.
- Use bright lights throughout your home, especially on the stairs.
- Keep stairs and places where you walk clear of clutter. Pick up or move things you can trip over, like cords,
papers, shoes, or books.
- Keep kitchen items you use often in easy-to-reach cabinets.
- Use non-slip mats in the bathtub or shower.

Recent Highlights
Joleen Weaver, a former staff member who moved out of the area, brought her
14-month-old daughter, Hailey, to visit us at the Center. Hailey quickly
warmed up to the clients, played ball with them and charmed them with her
enjoyment of the lights and Christmas balls on our tree. She brought many
smiles to all.
We have finished making the “doggie treats” for another year. It was a fun
activity of rolling, cutting out the treats with bone-shaped cookie cutters, baking
and then packaging them for your canine friends to enjoy. Now on to making
treats on Wednesdays that we will enjoy here in the Center!
Upcoming Events
Goodbye 2016—Hello 2017! “Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits.”
January bodes to be a challenging month. It is, after all, International Brainteaser Month. There are
brainteasers for every taste. Wordsmiths enjoy crosswords, word jumbles and acrostics. Mathematicians
enjoy sudoku and kakuro. Riddles, logic puzzles and good old-fashioned Rubik’s Cubes keep our minds
sharp.
Just as exercise is healthy for the body, brainteasers are healthy for the brain. Flex your gray matter by
answering some of these brainteasers below:
~ A man stands on one side of a river, his dog on the other. The man calls his dog, who immediately
crosses the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or a boat. How did the dog do it?
~ If your uncle’s sister is not your aunt, what relation is she to you?
~ Before Mt. Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain in the world?
Is your mind too cluttered with irrelevant minutia to solve January’s brainteasers? Never fear. Another
little known fact is that January 4 is Trivia Day—a day to demonstrate the remarkable benefits of random
knowledge. Make some room in your head for these curious tidbits:
~ There is a subtle change in color in the Washington Monument about one-quarter of the way up because
a lack of donations caused construction to be halted for a period of 25 years.
~ While many believe Hydrox cookies are an Oreo knock-off, Hydrox actually debuted in 1908—4 years
before Oreos. ~ Duffel bags originated in the town of Duffel, Belgium, where the thick cloth used to make the bag was
manufactured.
Answers to the Brainteasers: 1) He walked—the river was frozen. 2) The person is your mother.
3) Mt. Everest. It was still the highest mountain before it was discovered.
~ Now that we’re in the winter season, we plan to spend various times throughout the month reminiscing
about the beauty of the season as well as the considerable effort and ingenuity it took to stay warm in
years past. Hopefully, we’ll be able to rekindle a few warm memories of winters past.
~ Did you know there is actually an official “Hat Day”? We will “celebrate” by inviting persons to wear
their favorite hat on the 30th. Along with modeling our hats, we will compare styles and trends in the hat
world. How many occupations can you think of where you are required to wear a hat?

As 2017 rolls in, we are counting on the most important part of any activity or presentation to
be here. It is yo__. Without yo__, we would just be ”yo”. U are an important part of our good
days and great interactions.
Jan__ary is marshmallow cooking, Coca Cola exploration, special bread baking, a polka
playing accordion player, a travelog__e and a little bit of entertainment. But...remember it’s
not complete without U!

MEET OUR STAFF!
Each month we introduce one of our staff persons.
We hope you enjoy learning to know us a little better.
This month we are featuring Pam Dupont who works in the Eden East and Eden
West Centers both as a Manager and a Program Assistant. Pam has 3 rescue dogs
named Oscar, Marley and Kaia. Pam is a huge animal lover and would someday like
to be employed working with animals or doing volunteer work with animals.
In Pam’s spare time, she loves doing photography, baking, reading and re-purposing things. She also
enjoys doing anything that has to do with the “outdoors”. Something you may always find in Pam’s
refrigerator is baby spinach.
The best advice Pam’s parents gave her was to “have patience”. You will find her cheering on her
favorite sports team, the Philadelphia Eagles. What makes Pam smile the most is her dogs.
Pam’s favorite things about working in Adult Day Services are enjoying the conversations and stories
she hears while working in the Centers. Pam likes knowing she is making a positive difference in
clients’ and families’ lives.
Eden West Client Highlights
This month we are featuring Phoebe Martin. She
has been attending the Eden West Center for over
7 years. She lives in Ephrata and is married to her
husband, Allen, and together they have 1 daughter.
Phoebe has 7 brothers and 5 sisters, 25 nephews
and nieces and 50-some great-nephews and nieces.
An interesting tidbit about Phoebe: She and her
husband traveled to British Columbia with friends
and she loved the scenery! The thing that makes her
smile the most is seeing new and old friends and being with others.
Phoebe loves to try new things, which is why she is such an important
part of the craft creations here at the Eden West Center. She spends many
hours working on projects that we sell at our annual Christmas bazaar.
Phoebe’s favorite thing about attending Eden West is meeting and getting
to know new people and she says that the staff is nice and always friendly.
