It’s time for newspaper columnists to come out with their predictions for the
events of the coming year. Some will use some humor, but many will try to
make their best guesses seriously. In the tabloids, you’ll find a few self-
professed psychics claiming to know what’s going to happen with certainty.
It’s also that time of year when companies, organizations, and groups
announce their goals and projections for the coming year—sales estimates,
estimated profits or losses, etc. All these predictions or projections have one
thing in common—by this time next year virtually none of the things predicted
now will have happened exactly as thought. Only God knows!
If you check a Bible concordance, you’ll find that almost every time “tomorrow” is mentioned in the
Bible, it’s in a negative context. St. James warns us against putting our faith in human plans. “Now
listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there,
carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen
tomorrow” (James 4:13). Proverbs 27:1 says, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not
know what a day may bring forth.” Jesus Himself told us, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34).
Those of you who like to “fly by the seat of your pants” are cheering! It justifies your lack of planning
or goal setting. After all, why plan or set any goals when no one knows for certain even what
tomorrow will bring, let alone the next year or five or ten years? Just save time and skip the
planning. That attitude isn’t right! A certain amount of planning and goal setting is good! Though
He was speaking about the cost of following Him, Jesus’ illustration in Luke 14 gives some guidance:
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if
he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it,
everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to
finish’” (vv. 28-30).
As with virtually all areas of our Christian life, the subject of planning and goal setting is to be
approached with balance. As human beings created in His image, God has given us the ability to
reason and to plan. Unfortunately, as human beings fallen into sin, our plans too often are about
what we want, not necessarily about what God wants. Fortunately, as human beings reborn through
Baptism and being recreated into God’s image by the Holy Spirit through God’s Word, we have been
empowered to align our wills with God’s will.
Our most important focus in planning is to seek God’s will in all that we do and think. Proverbs
offers these words of wisdom: “To man belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the
reply of the tongue. All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord.
Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. The Lord works out everything
for His own ends” (16:1-4)
To help us keep the proper focus St. James gives a better alternative to relying on our own plans:
“Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” (4:15). As you and I
look to the coming year, may each of us seek to have all of our plans and dreams in line with the
Lord’s will for us and His kingdom.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy 2017, fellow GOCers! I am always so excited at the beginning of each year – the possibilities of serving Him are endless!
First of all, I sincerely want to thank everyone who made our Christmas ministry such a glory this year. Beginning with the Hanging of the Greens,
the Glendora Christmas Parade, Christmas Caroling and ending with our Fifth Annual Christmas Choral Festival, the dedication and commitment of our members, students, parents, friends and staff was simply unequaled. It is such a blessing to work with servants who are filled with joy in praising His name. Because of you, many were touched by your blessings and know that Grace of Calvary is there for them. God bless you!
And already January is looking bright! Our Abide in Me Coffee House Worship Experience resumes this month on January 27 @ 7:00 p.m. We are looking forward to sharing new and familiar music with you. Come join us!
On Sunday, January 29 at our 10 a.m. worship service, the wonderful Bel Canto Choir from Azusa Pacific will be with us to enhance our fellowship. If you have not heard this unique group, please mark your calendar to be with us – don’t miss it!
Lastly, if you attended the Choral Festival, you noticed that we are involving not only our member youth but students from our Kid City After School program in our music ministry. Parents – if your child plays an instrument and would like to participate, please contact me or Mrs. Hill for more information. We are also considering a choir at a future date.
Thank you again for all your love and support – it is my pleasure to be His servant, and yours!
Dawn L. Hayes-Stewart, Director of Music Ministries
A Few Words for 2017
With the close of 2016, we had many challenges throughout the year, but I believe that one of greatest accomplishments was always working together with faith in God's word.
Now as we journey in to the new year, we as Gods' people at Grace will forge ahead. January is the month of NEW BEGINNINGS. Not only do many of us make personal resolutions at the beginning of each year, but also groups often set new goals and challenges. We start with prayer and then we'll continue to reach out to spread the good news about Gods' Love to our neighbors and friends and invite them to join us. Let them know the "Fruit of the Spirit" - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Let us be God's messengers all year.
I thank God for each of you and our ministry here at Grace of Calvary. We can do all things through Christ which strengthens us, Philippians 4:13 Evangelism
CONTREGATIONAL MEETING...Our annual Congregational Meeting is scheduled
for January 29, 2017. The meeting will elect new Council people, review and adopt
the budget for 2017, and vote on the matter of the disaffiliation from the ELCA. The
agenda for the meeting is in the process of being prepared and will be provided to all
GOC members prior to the meeting. Council members—please begin preparing
your articles for the Annual Report for timely submission.
Thank you! Mallie Donohoe

From the Directors:
Happy New Year to all of families! We hope that each of our families was blessed with the blessings that Christmas joy brings! We would like to thank all of our families for donating books and DVD’s to
make our gift exchanges fun and special for our children and also to thank our
parents that helped and provided the yummy food for our Christmas parties.
We greatly appreciate your help, time and donations.
January will bring some important dates, so please mark your calendars. We
will be closed Monday, January 2nd to observe New Year’s Day and Monday,

Happy New Year!
In December we had classroom parties with
donuts from Krispy Kreme and hot chocolate.
Everyone had a great time!
We are very excited to have Miss Bobbi in Room 4 as a co-teacher with
Miss Alex. We say a sad good-bye to Miss Tiffany as she and her family
plan to move soon . We will miss her, and hopefully she will come back
to visit us when she is in the area.
Don’t forget that Kid City closed on January 16th in observance of
Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday. Kid City is open on January 17th when the public schools are closed .
If you need to have your child here for a vacation day, there will be a sign up outside of the Kid City office!
Please let us know, by filling in next to your child’s name with a “yes” or “no” for that day.
As we start this New Year we thank God for all he has done for us at Kid City and pray that he continues
to bless us.
God bless you all with health and happiness in this New Year from everyone at Kid City!
Thanking God for You,
Anna Marie Hill, Director Kid City
Happy New Year Friends!
We hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas and a relaxing break. It’s hard to
believe 2017 is already here! Room 2 finished off 2016 very merrily. The
Kindergarten friends did many fun holiday crafts and activities. They helped
decorate the classroom with their amazing Christmas crafts including reindeer, snow globes, and a
Christmas tree we all had a hand in making. Room 2’s classroom New Year’s resolution is to always try
to use respect. We will be doing different activities and exercises to demonstrate
different ways to respect people and why it is always important. We are all excited for
what the New Year is going to bring to Room 2!

Hola Kid City Parents,
Here at Kid City we're always looking for new ways to learn. I've
been incorporating Spanish vocabulary words with a game to
help the kids better understand the words and to help them with
the spelling. The children really enjoy it and it helps keep them engaged.
Muchas Gracias

Happy Holidays! Hello !
Happy Holidays from the elves over at Room 4! We have been working so
hard this past month to bring Christmas joy to each and every family in our
room. The elves have been working hard making
pinecone ornaments and cards for their families! We’ve
even had a chance to create a 2017 calendar to start off
the New Year that is specially handcrafted with their
cute hands! We are filled with joy to add Miss Bobbi to
our family! Have a safe and fun filled Christmas, along
with a happy New Year!
Love and Blessings,
Miss Alex and Miss Bobbi
Happy New Year From Room 5!
We finished 2016 out with a bang! We had 2 parties the week before Christmas
break: 1 for Miss Treya’s birthday, and 1 to celebrate the holidays. The friends in
Room 5 helped with Miss Treya’s birthday by bringing in fruits and vegetables for us to use for the
party. Riley brought lemons, we made lemonade, Gavin brought avocados and we made guacamole!
We have a policy in Room 5 that if you grow food at home and would like to share some with us, we will
make something tasty for all the friends to enjoy.
In January we will be starting a weekly journal to reflect on what is happening in each of our lives. We
do a journal during summer camp each year, and they are very entertaining to read. We feel it is
important to make sure we are not just surviving every day, but LIVING every day, and what better way
to do that then to write about what is important to each of us.
We hope 2017 brings every one of you everything you have wished for in the New Year. We look
forward to spending it with all of the great families here at Grace of Calvary Kid City!

We cordially invite you to worship God with us and celebrate the New Life God gives us in the raising of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Children are an integral part of our worship service. We all begin worship together, and then our children are dismissed prior to the sermon to our new Sunday School. Grace of Calvary Lutheran Church & Preschool is a family-oriented church founded in 1956, and a supporter of such programs as Lutheran Social Services of California, the Alhambra Retirement Community, the Lutheran Food Bank in West Covina, The Shepherd’s Pantry, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Immigration Services, and Habitat for Humanity International. The Preschool is an exciting, educational ministry open to all children in the community. Daily classes are taught by a faculty dedicated to the educational, social and spiritual growth of the children from 7:00 a.m.—6:00 p.m., including a computer lab. Weekly chapel is led by the Director of Music. Active members of the congregation may receive up to a 25% discount off tuition. Our After School Care program is now a Heritage School open for children in grades TK Kindergarten through 8th. We currently start at 6:30 a.m. and have drop-off and pick-up at the following schools: Sellers, Cullen, La Fetra, Sutherland, Goddard and Sandburg. We provide pick-up of our children from their school to Kid City until 6:00 p.m. Time is spent on homework, free and outdoor play and crafts. Spanish is taught through our language program along with fun customs and culture, all in a loving Christian and caring environment. Weekly chapel is led by the Pastor. We have a weekly Quick Kids Sports Program where the children can exercise and learn sportsmanship. Nutritious snacks are provided daily. It is our belief that each child should enjoy an environment that encourages individual emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual growth. It is our desire to help guide our Kid City children through the trials of being an elementary and middle school student. We are here to help with anything they need.
Our newly-revived Youth Ministry involves Christian concerts, community activities, and just getting together for fun and fellowship!
Our women’s group, Miriam Circle, meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month. They celebrate by enjoying lunch and pursuing educational and spiritual growth. Miriam Circle provides meals for shut-ins, funds for various ministries, as well as family visits to those in need.
