PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Thank you for allowing me to serve as President of the Hawaii Land Surveyors Association for this year. While my active involvement had not been there for a couple of years, my heart and commitment to the organization and its members has not wavered. I am honored to serve.
This year’s HLSA conference at the Pomaika’i Ballrooms at Dole Cannery went very well. A little different venue from being at a hotel, but very well received, nonetheless. There are many to thank for the success of the conference. There is no order of importance as all were critical to making this happen beginning with the members and attendees who had to commit the time and cost to be present. Many thanks to the staff of the Pomaika’i Ballrooms for the accommodations and service, responding to our requests when needed. Our thanks also go out to the vendors for providing information, exhibits and insight to the technologies that make our work better. Speakers deserve a big Mahalo, as the time they took to prepare their presentations for the break-out sessions is greatly appreciated. One of our main speakers, Mr. Gary Kent of the Schneider Corporation in Indiana, provided us with two, day long sessions covering right-of-ways, easements and ALTA Surveys.
A heartfelt appreciation to the previous and incoming members of the HLSA Board of Directors. Their efforts along with dedication and perseverance has kept the fl ame burning with the hope of it getting brighter moving forward. Here are the elected Board members for 2018:

The Awards and Installation Banquet honored two very special people in the land surveying community. The Surveyors Lifetime Achievement Award went to Mr. Andy Harada and the Surveyor of the Year Award to Ms. Joanne Williamson. Congratulations to these well deserving people!
The Board of Directors is continually working year-round in support of the association and its members, and we welcome any volunteering of resources.

While any fi nancial support is always great, the commitment and investment of time is even greater with much better returns. There have been topics of discussion brought up during the conference that are in need of follow up and will require participation and input from the membership and others. Task force(s) will need to invest time and effort to pursue these matters. There are also other committees that would welcome more volunteers. The members of the Board have been doing an extraordinary job splitting their time, talent and duties between family, work and the association, including committees. We are asking for volunteers from the membership or, even if not a member, and part of the surveying community, for participation.
A few of the topics that were brought up are as follows:
• Land Court Deregistration• Realtor’s/Contractors Possible Misinformation on Surveyors• NSRS Modernization 2022.
We will provide more detailed information on these matters as we are ourselves accumulate and digest them.
I am sure there are many other concerns and challenges that will need to be addressed which may affect us all in some compacity, but again, we need resources, especially, in the way of participation, which I humbly, put a call out to. It could mean becoming a member of the Board or a committee or just helping out with a function. Any of these will be greatly appreciated and will go a long way to help this association be successful and continue to support this community.
Thank you and respectfully yours,
Karl NishioPresidentHawaii Land Surveyors Association
