Nano Step (In-situ observation of growth mechanisms of protein crystals and their perfection under microgravity) AO#2 (released in 2007) Objectives: It has been emphasized in the literature that the protein crystal perfection increases in microgravity conditions. However, the precise mechanism responsible for such observation is yet to be understood from the fundamental point of view. Our objective is to elucidate the correlation of growth mechanisms at various levels of supersaturation and defects induced during growth. We are planning to use lysozyme as a model protein and observe the growing crystal surfaces by Michelson interferometer. The growth rates of nano-steps can be calculated from the observation of crystal surfaces as a function of supersaturation. International Topical Teams since 2006

- A final goal of this framework is to develop and submit a joint proposal to the natinal flight AOs (ESA AO, JAXA AO, and hopefully future NASA NRA...) - open to international researchers, international participation are welcomed

Timing of teaming is very important. Earlier is better! Let’s find partners at earlier stage through ISPS etc.!

International Topical Teams

2012/6/28 JAXA Program Update for IMSPG21 36

JAXA and ESA agreed to organize “International Topical Teams” consisting of Japanese research

Teams and ESA topical teams to promote organizing international research teams and developing

joint research plans. The goals of the joint Team are to expand the flight opportunities and maximize

the scientific outputs through mutual use of JEM and COF. ITT program is open to all the agencies

and countries.

Gradient Heating Furnace (GHF) Overview & Specification&Status

• Launched with HTV2 and now on-board • initial check-out was conducted from

February 2011. • Three Heaters • Maximum Temperature is around 1400

degree Celcius with present limiter-board. • Automatic sample exchange (SCAM) • Stopped with some trouble around

heaters. • Exchanged main heater. • Trouble with TMP(Turbo Molecular Pump). • S/W modification is now planned so that

GHP can be operated without TMP.
