The age old question about which is betteris about to be answered. Microsoft orSony? Which is superior? Which allowswhat? Which has more sales? Whichshould YOU spend money on? Well, thesequestions are about to be answered in thisarticle here. So stay and read up for thisarticle of Console Royale! Now let’s start with our contestants forsales, the new PS4, or Playstation 4, andthe PS3, both released by Sony and theXBox One or, as I like to call it, the X1, andthe XBox 360 which was released byMicrosoft. First, we’ll start with the mainfactors in our argument, the sales. Whobought more of which product, and whodecided it wasn’t good enough, then wentwith the rival. (The PS4 will be listed first, since it was released on the 15th ofNovember in the US, seven days beforethe X1, which was released on November22). According to the last global sales count, based on earnings statements from bothcompanies, was 34.4 million totalcombined PS4 and PS3 sales and 23.4million combined Xbox One and Xbox 360sales since the current generationconsoles launched in November 2013. NPD also noted on October 19th, 2015,that “after 23 months on the market, combined PS4 and Xbox One sales are 40percent higher than the combined 23month totals for PS3 and 360.” Take 2Interactive NBA 2K16 was the top-sellinggame last month and has the best launchmonth ever for any sports game made forthe Xbox One and/or PS4.

As far as the console competition withSony, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, satdown for a fireside chat at the recentGeekWire Summit and offered someinsight into Microsoft’s early misstepswith the Xbox One launch and theongoing battle with Sony. Stating thingslike, many Xbox fans across the worldexpressed displeasure with a numberof Xbox One features, including the factthat the console did not offer backwardcompatibility with Xbox 360 games andimplemented restrictions with game-sharing.While on top of that, Microsoft originallypriced its console at $499 — $100 morethan Sony’s Playstation 4. Spencer, whowas part of the leadership team thathelped launch the Xbox One beforebecoming head of Xbox in April 2014,went on to say that Microsoft lost thetrust of gamers.“Whatever the feature may have been,we lost the trust in [our customers] thatthey were at the center of our decision-making process,” he said in aninterview, “Were we building for us, orfor the gamers? As soon as thatquestion came into people’s minds andthey looked at any of those features, you find very quickly that you lose thebenefit of the doubt.”As for the Sony side, despite Microsoft’sbest efforts, Sony laid waste to the LosAngeles big stage on E3 of 2015, pullingout some of the most spectacularreveals in show history and eliciting thesort of crowd reactions normallyreserved for DJs and pop stars. FinalFantasy 7, Shenmue 3 and The LastGuardian ensured tears all round.

In an interview with reporterVG247, Jim Ryan stated whenasked about the night before atE3,” I enjoyed the whole thing, actually. I obviously don’t getinvited to the Microsoft one. Iwent to EA, Ubisoft and ours. There were pluses and minusesacross the board, but I think myabiding take-out is a sense thatdevelopers are really starting tofeel comfortable and confidentwith next-gen.”He continues on saying,” It’sarguably taken a bit longer thanpeople thought it would, but, genuinely, and not just at ourconference, there was severalmoments when I just went, “Wow,that looks great.” And it’s nicewhen you have that sort of day. Itwas good.”

Now that we have the geeky interviews andsales, let’s get to the really geeky stuff. Thethings that will either cause nerds and geekseverywhere to swoon over the console, orend it with a ‘FATALITY’ in frustration. Thepros and cons of both consoles. The launch smoke has cleared and gamershave officially entered the era of next-generation gaming, which wasn’t exactly aterrible thing. With the Western Innovators of Microsoft, you have the $499 Xbox One, a gamingconsole that wants to be the center of yourliving room experience. Complete with liveTV integration, as well as a revamped Kinect2, controller and interface, the One is a forceto be reckoned with.In the Capable and experienced Easternhands of Sony, is the PS4. Positioning itself asthe gamer’s console, at $399, PS4 offers aninnovative controller, a heavy emphasis onsocial and Remote Play capabilities allowinggamers to play anywhere in the house, to areasonable limit, of course. But which system is the right system for yourgaming and entertainment needs?Well to figure that out, we must look into afew of the main factors playing into the basestats of our two competitors, while you canfind the remaining factors on the website inthe :Design

Controller

Kinect 2 vs. Playstation Camera

XBox Live vs. Playstation Plus

Finally, the Verdict

B L A ZER T IME S - 5

First of is Design, the Xbox One and PS4follow a lot of the tenets of American andJapanese car design. Like a LincolnNavigator, the 7-pound, 13.1 x 10.5 x3.25-inch Xbox One is big and imposing.Besides the alternating panels of blackglossy and matte plastic with plenty ofventilation slots, there isn’t much to theOne’s design. For all intents andpurposes, it’s a big heavy box. Microsoftmakes up for the bulkiness by adding aprodigious amount of ports includingthree USB 3.0 ports, HDMI-in, HDMI-out,S/PDIF, an Auxiliary port, Ethernet, IR Out,and a secure lock slot. While the PS4 is more like a Mazda Miata. The 6.1-pound, 10.8 x 12 x 2.08-inchconsole is nice and compact, and itsangular design makes it look moremodern. Similar to the One, the PS4 hasboth glossy and matte black plasticpanels, but adds a horizontal color-changing LED strip to break up thelandscape. Our only complaint about thePS4’s design is the somewhat hiddenpower and eject buttons, which blend intoo well with the LED strip.

And, while the PS4 doesn’t have as manyports as the Xbox One, but it still has twoUSB 3.0 ports in the front of the deviceand HDMI-out, Ethernet, an Optical port, and an Auxiliary port for the PlayStationCamera. To sum up this round, the Xbox One isbig and bulky, showing the undesirablecube-like design, the PS4 is sleek and slim, sporting the smooth, thin visage thatmost of the modern gaming communitywant. We love this modernist look of thePS4, which makes it look more like a next-gen console, and something that will bejust as attractive five years from now, where has the X1 resembles an oldconsole television from 2001.

Our victor in Design: The Playstation4

The next portion is Controller, whichhas been bashed and argued aboutmost for the consoles.Featuring a clickable touchpad,PlayStation’s DualShock 4 controlleris one of the most innovative on themarket. It also has a large lightbarthat changes color to show playerstheir in-game status, and works inconjunction with the PlayStationCamera for motion control.

The DualShock 4 also sports acurvier, more streamlined body. Theshoulder and bumpers now sitcomfortably at the top of thecontroller, and the face buttons areslightly larger and more pronouncedthan the previous generationcontroller.

The Xbox 360 controller wasconsidered by many to be the goldstandard of gaming, but Microsofthas made a few notable tweaksincluding a revamped analog sticksand d-pad. The controller also gainedan extra set of rumble motors forbetter haptic feedback. It made it alot easier to get a feel for the track in“Forza Motorsport 5.”

XBOX VS PLAYSTATION

Noah Holt

Page 7: JC Schools

In terms of weight, the One’s 6 x 4 x 1.7-inchcontroller is the bulkier of the two at 9.9ounces, compared to the 7.4-ounce, 6.2 x2.04 x 3.85-inch DualShock 4 controller. We applaud the DualShock 4’s designimprovements and Sony’s dedication toinnovation with the touchpad. However, theXbox One’s controller is the better device. The subtle redesign noticeably improves thegaming experience without reinventing thewheel.

Our declared victor for Controller: The XboxOne

Next is our section on the Kinect 2 vs. thePlaystation Camera. The Kinect 2 upgrades the original camera to1080p from VGA. There’s also a IR camera, giving the device night vision. The cameraboasts a better field of view, allowing it tofunction well in large and small spaces. TheKinect 2’s camera can also take your pulseand heart rate with a simple body scan. ThePlayStation camera, by comparison, consistsof a pair of 720p cameras with fourintegrated microphones. The Xbox respondsto more than 39 commands; the Kinect 2was good enough to pick up our voice in acrowded room, but was a little too sensitivefor our liking. You can also use hand gesturesto control the Xbox, but tracking our armmovements hit or miss, and quickly led toarm fatigue. The Kinect 2 is at its best when performingface recognition, immediately switching fromone user’s account to another’s as soon asthe new player picks up the controller. ThePS camera’s face recognition abilities arealmost as responsive. However, we found we continually had tohold the DualShock 4 controller level with thecamera for a proper scan.

Our declared victor for the Kinect 2 vs.Playstation Camera: Xbox One

B L A ZER T IME S - 6

Although the PlayStation Camera is abig improvement from the PlayStationEye, it’s no match for the Kinect 2.Microsoft’s device offers better specs anda larger feature set, including gesturecontrols, a larger voice command list andthe ability to perform biometric scans.

Finally, after everything, even the factorswe couldn’t list, which you can find on thewebsite listed in our credits page, ourfinal verdict is… Why should you evencare? It’s a game console that helpsevolve the endless innovation andimagination of the gamer and the gamemaker. People should be happy that theyget to play these wonderful pieces ofelectric wiring and motherboardinterfaces. So all in all, just because the XBox Onetook the lead by two doesn’t mean youshould care which is better, as long asyou get to experience the amazingadvancement of these two next-generation consoles. Now if you’ll excuseme, I’m going to be a nerd and playNintendo’s newly released Fire EmblemFates.

Is it appropriate to use an emoji symbol in business meetings?

I suggest that only certain emojis should be used for business. Mostpeople, or should I say, certain types of people don't understandhow to use an emoji. Plus what would you need an emoji foranyways in a business meeting, wouldn't that be uncalled for? Whatwould be the use of an emoji? To try to explain what they’re saying? It wasn’t that long that people used an exclamation point asetiquette, but now in the modern day people use an emoji as a wayof saying things. Emoticons were usually just a smiley face insteadof a little yellow circle with a face on it. Emoji range from a lot ofcolors. Most people still have more and more mixed emotions.

A lot of young lives use emoji to describe how people look/howthey feel. Whenever I see young kids like fifth graders using emoji, itmakes me worried because back when I was little and their age Inever used emoji’s. These past years I’ve used a lot of emoji’s andused them to describe how I feel. I honestly think that adults shoulduse the emoji symbols instead of 11 or 12 year olds. I hate the factthat most teens these days are using emoji symbols instead oftelling people how they feel about them in words. If people were totake a stand against using the emoji as feelings, it would probablybe a lot of people. Most people don't have the technology tounderstand what or how to use an emoji.

Hello guys, I’m the Storyteller, and we’re herewith our literature hour, which let’s us shareshort stories that either you, or someoneelse in our department has created. So let usintroduce the first one that was written byyours truly on Halloween (Even though it’snot exactly good, but hey, fun is fun right?)…

When people look into the mirror, they seethemselves, right? Well, what if I told you, that every time you looked into the mirrorand stared at yourself, it was anotherperson, another separate being staring rightback?I can imagine you're reading this andthinking ‘Wow, what an idiot!’ But let me tellyou, I know that this is true. Let me explain…In my bathroom, like every other bathroom, Ihave a mirror, just above the sink. I tend toleave notes to myself there, using stickynotes to place them on the rim of the mirror. Some say ‘Buy more shampoo’ or ‘Buy moretoothpaste.’ You know, little things that I’llhave to do throughout my day.One day, I wrote myself a new kind of note, one to kinda start a lonely, one-sidedconversation with myself. I simply wrote“How was your day?” Nothing special.Nothing important, just a generic question. What I didn’t expect was a response. Themorning after writing the note I noticed it ina different corner of my mirror, with a newresponse written in bold, red ink “Good. Howwas your night? Any dreams?”At first, thinking my sister snuck into myroom to toy with me, to simply get a laugh, but, at the bottom of the little note, I noticeda signature, one written in a way that wasway too elegant to be my sister’s. Looking atthe mirror, I stared at my reflection, wide-eyed as the person staring back at me with ahalf-awake smile and half-lidded eyes, with asecret, unexplainable aura emanating fromhim.

B L A ZER T IME S - 8

Since that little encounter I have begun toshut my bathroom door when I sleep orleave the house, not wanting to look atthe drunken stupor that looked back atme, the one that hid a rageful malicebehind what appeared to be a simple setof crimson that bored into my sockets. So, yeah, that person looking at you in themirror doesn’t want to be your friend, heor she just wants to get out. To pull youthrough and get out. So I suggest youstop staring into the mirror to put onmake-up or pop that zit, just step away, and go about your life. While, of course, shutting the door behind you…

Thank you guys for reading andremember, we would love it if you guyswould send in your own short stories, soplease, if you have one send it into theemail [email protected],[email protected], [email protected]. Thanks againfor reading, have a nice day and/or night.
