OUR MISSION

The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

Type 1 diabetes is a devastating autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and lasts a lifetime. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreasstops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 1 diabetes affects as many as 3 million people in the U.S. alone. Every year, more than 30,000 new cases of type 1 diabetes are diagnosed. Half of those diagnosed each year with type 1 diabetes are children and teenagers, and half are adults.

Type 1 diabetes makes life incredibly difficult. People with the disease must carefully balance insulin doses with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night—and still run the risk of dangerous high or low blood sugar levels. People with type 1 diabetes need to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin (with injections or a pump) multiple times per day—every day for the rest of their lives.

Insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent the many complications that often accompany diabetes: kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, amputation, and preg¬nancy complications. People with diabetes are at constant risk of having their blood sugar levels rise too high or fall too low. These extremes can be life-limiting and life-threatening.

Family Support Events: $6,000• For children living with type 1 diabetes and their families to connect, share stories, tips and experiences and above all find camaraderie with others who face a similar challenge of coping with the day-to-day challenges of this chronic illness • Each event is held in a different location around the Greater Bay Area (North Bay, San Francisco, East Bay and Peninsula/South Bay) in order to be accessible to as many people as possible • Marketing and advertising opportunities the same as listed in the Adult Outreach Sponsorship, but specific to Family Outreach Events

Teen Support & College Preparation Program: $1,500• The Teen Support program offers a tremendous benefit to type 1 teens by connecting them to their peers and providing them with the opportunity to build a community of support for themselves outside of their family • “Ready, Set, Go: College & Type 1 Diabetes” involves students, recent grads, parents and medical professional panelists speaking on topics such as roommates, alcohol safety and utilizing school resources• Organization name and logo exposure on Teen Support & College Preparation Events, including print, eLinks, the JDRF Bay Area newsletter and hyperlink to partner’s website on JDRFbayarea.org

Youth Ambassador Program: $3,000• JDRF Bay Area Youth Ambassadors is a new program. A program for kids with type 1 diabetes in K-12th grades who want to spread awareness about diabetes, educate others about the disease, and get to know other kids who also have type 1 diabetes in a fun, interactive setting• Approximately 5-6 Youth Ambassador Events are held each year for the Ambassadors and their families to gather and create artwork or work on a service projects in support of the local type 1 diabetes community• Youth Ambassadors are asked to commit to 10 hours of volunteer service over the school year. Cities around the world organize various events, including educational talks and screenings, inspirational presentations, government advocacy pushes and celebrations that empower the millions of people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Annual Research Symposium Spring 2012The premier educational event of the chapter brings together leaders in the type 1 diabetes field to provide constituents with the opportunity to learn about current research initiatives, scientific and medical advances as well as best practices in diabetes management.
