Thank you for the opportunity to share the JDRF story with you and the opportunity to invite you to be a part of the revolutionary advancements being made today that will transform the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes tomorrow.

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Driven by passionate, grass roots volun teers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF is to improve the lives of every person affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing the disease. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of part ners who share this goal.

Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.6 billion to T1D research, including $116 million in FY2011. JDRF has always been dedicated to maintaining the highest levels of efficiency to ensure that our time, resources, and dollars can achieve the greatest possible impact on the lives of people with T1D. We have a solid track record of funding research efficiently and effectively and year after year commit more than 80 percent of our expenditures directly to research and research-related education.

A T R A N S F O R M A T I V E V I S I O NAs the leader of the type 1 diabetes community, JDRF unifies global efforts to cure, treat, and prevent T1D. We are committed, as we always have been, to delivering a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research. We are also focused on developing better treatments that transform the way people with T1D treat the disease today in order to help them live healthier lives now and in the future. Finally, JDRF focuses on prevention to keep future generations from getting T1D.

Guided by our vision of cure, treat, and prevent, JDRF-funded research encompasses T1D at every life-stage: stopping or slowing its progression in people who are newly diagnosed; reversing it in those who have lived with the disease for years; avoiding or reversing complications; and preventing the disease in people at risk and in future generations.

I N N O V A T I O N A N D C O L L A B O R A T I O NResearch funded by JDRF has led to many landmark advances in type 1 diabetes science. We aggressively translate discoveries into treatments, drugs, and therapies that help people with T1D live healthier lives now, while we work toward a cure. Currently, JDRF is funding more than 53 human clinical trials, several of which are in the advanced stages of clinical testing needed before FDA approvals are required.

Things are very exciting right now! However, while our accomplishments are vast and the rewards deliverable, there remains much to be done. Please join us as we plan for a future free of type 1 diabetes. Your partnership and investment in our future will have a significant and powerful impact on the lives of the millions of children and adults currently living with type 1 diabetes. You are the change!

J D R F P U T S D O N O R D O L L A R S T O W O R K• More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and

research-related education.• JDRF has made a bold impact on the research landscape by setting the agenda

for T1D research worldwide. JDRF doesn’t merely fund basic science, but takes scientific developments and translates those developments into cures, treatments, drugs, and therapies.

• JDRF is the go-to organization for T1D research. We play a unique role in setting the global direction of T1D research by partnering with academia, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, venture capitalists, government entities, and other foundations.

We strategically partner with industry, governments, foundations, academia, and clinicians to ensure that JDRF and its partners are aligned and working toward a common goal of curing, treating, and preventing T1D.

J D R F I N T H E N E W S• Forbes: JDRF was awarded an efficiency rating of 89 out of 100 in Forbes

Magazine’s most recent charity ranking. Forbes called JDRF “...a tightly run organization that puts almost every dollar spent to work curing disease....”

• The Wall Street Journal: “Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has spent some [$1.6 billion] on research. It has a pile of discoveries to show for it....”

• Charity Navigator: Awarded JDRF 3 stars, including, a perfect score (70 out of 70 points) for Accountability and Transparency.

• Better Business Bureau: Recognized as an “Accredited Charity” by the BBB’s Wise Giving Alliance, JDRF meets all of the BBB 20 Standards for Charity Accountability and is an accredited BBB Charity Seal holder.

A B O U T T 1 DType 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and — at present — nothing you can do to get rid of it.

J D R F R E S E A R C H F U N D I N G O V E R V I E W• Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has funded more than $1.6 billion in T1D research and

has dramatically advanced the T1D scientific frontier and the management of this disease. In FY2011 alone, JDRF provided more than $116 million for T1D research.

• More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF maintains one of the best records among all non-profits for effective and efficient management of donor contributions.

• In FY2011, JDRF funded research projects in 18 countries representing the global scope of JDRF’s research efforts.

• As more JDRF programs move forward, the number of human or clinical studies has grown. In FY2011, JDRF supported 53 clinical studies, including evaluations of new therapies, studies of the normal course of T1D, and others to collect specific T1D human samples.

J D R F ’ S R E S E A R C H G O A L SJDRF research is committed to improving the lives of every person with T1D and to curing this disease. JDRF’s research goals are realized by the projects being supported in three basic areas:C U R ERestoring a person’s insulin-producing capability and halting or reversing the body’s misguided immune attack on the pancreas.T R E A TDeveloping new devices and therapies that optimize blood sugar control and treat orprevent the complications of T1D.P R E V E N TPreventing T1D from occurring or stopping the disease process before it damages the pancreas.

Committed to a cure• We are committed, as we have always been, to our mission, which is to find a cure

for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research.• We are also focused on prevention to keep future generations free from getting

type 1 diabetes.

Better treatments today• We are transforming the way people with type 1 diabetes treat the disease today in

order to help them live healthier lives now and in the future.

All ages, all stages• JDRF supports research to develop better treatments and a cure for type 1 diabetes

at all life stages. This includes the following:• Stopping or slowing the progression of the disease in newly diagnosed children, teens

and adults. Fifty percent of all newly diagnosed type 1’s are over the age of 18.• Reversing it in those who have lived with the disease for years• Avoiding or reversing its complications• Preventing the disease in people at risk and in future generations• Improving treatment of type 1 diabetes and providing better tools to achieve tight

glucose control for people at all stages of the disease.• As we’ve always done, we are embracing research targeted to individuals at all stages

of type 1 diabetes, including adults who have lived for many years with the disease, as well as children with type 1 diabetes and their families.

Partnering with purpose• We strategically partner with industry, governments, foundations, academia, and

clinicians to ensure that JDRF and its partners are aligned and working toward a common goal of curing, treating and preventing type 1 diabetes.

• Partnering brings innovative ideas to life. Crucial to achieving our goals, industry has the resources to take basic research and bring it to market, where it can benefit people with type 1 diabetes.

You are not alone• As the parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, “my chief priority is finding a cure,”

says JDRF’s CEO Jeffrey Brewer. Until we can achieve that goal, “I want to make sure my son and everyone else living with type 1 diabetes has treatments that will keep them healthy along the way. And ultimately I want to make sure that we find ways to prevent the onset of the disease entirely so that future generations at risk never have to think about whether or not they will develop the disease.”
