Jennifer Richards does not create art for political commentary, to challenge the human condition, or to provoke deep inward existentialist examination. It’s not complicated or philosophical. Rather, there is simplicity and an ever-present serenity in her work, a counter-balance to the hurried hamster-wheel of 21st century life. !

As a child in the mid-Atlantic region of the east coast, Jennifer Richards never dreamt of becoming an artist. She channelled her creative side into playing viola, experimenting in the darkroom with her grandfather's old SLR camera, and sewing her own clothing. Her passion in high school for all things scientific opened the door to after-school employment in a biotech lab, and in college and graduate school she studied geography and the global diversity of land, resources, and cultures-- themes that would resurface many years later in her art.

A craving for adventure and independence lead Jennifer to Fairbanks, Alaska at age 20 where she spent four life-changing years living in a rustic, dry cabin. She was captivated by the beauty of the subarctic landscape and felt quite at home among the unique characters and culture of the region. While in Alaska, the relationship between visual perception and emotional wellbeing became firmly cemented in her consciousness. “I remember lying in the snow to watch the northern lights dance across the sky. Despite the bitter cold, I couldn't imagine a more peaceful place.” !

In search of a little more sunshine, Jennifer and her Alaska sweetheart moved to Southern California in 1997 and chose Encinitas in 2002 when they were ready to start a family. Inspired by the surf culture, beautiful vegetation, and relaxed spirit of the locals, Jennifer embarked on a mission to fill the walls of her new home on

with paintings of uniquely-local subjects. "The only way I could get exactly what I wanted was to try to do it myself, so I bought a bunch of paint and canvases and started to experiment.” !

After a decade of unsatisfying results, Jennifer began formal art instruction with Albert Martin in 2012 and literally went back to the drawing board to learn foundational skills of the old masters. Within a year she was ready to emerge

from the studio and present her work in public. In 2013 her paintings were juried into shows at the Museum of the Living Artist in San Diego’s Balboa Park, and she won her first award at the San Diego Fine Art Exhibition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack. The Off Track Gallery in Encinitas, CA began showing and selling her work, and in 2014 the Encinitas 101 Mainstreet Association hosted her first solo show, SoCal Muse.

This painting of Highway 101 in Encinitas was inspired by Classic Car Night and features La Paloma Theater, one of the first theaters to show “Talkies” when it opened in 1928 (it also has a vaudeville stage and a pipe organ for the silent films back in the day). The “Encinitas” sign was installed in 2000 and is a reproduction of the one that came down in 1938.

Paraglider over Torrey Pines 2013, oil on panel, 18 x 18 inches

Although I’ve never been paragliding, it’s an amazing thing to watch from the sidelines. The Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla, California is recognized as one of the best flying sites in the world. This is a definite must-see for anyone who lives in or visits the San Diego area.

After a long day of driving through the desert it felt a little sci-fi and quite surreal to stumble upon this wind farm in the Anza Borrego Desert, just east of San Diego, California. Their graceful movement against the backdrop of the sunset and the calming sound of the air moving was inspiring enough, well, for a painting.

This is my buddy on his morning ride to work through Rancho Santa Fe, California. He calls this painting “Brutal winter commute in San Diego.”

My family went on a road trip to Yosemite National Park and rented a house with this amazing view of El Capitan and Half Dome.

I watched these little guys run around at the beach over the winter holidays while my little guys did the same. It was chilly, sunny, and so peaceful to have the whole beach to ourselves.

This is the view from the Fisherman’s Perch beach cottage at Crystal Cove, near Laguna Beach, CA. My family escaped modern life last winter for some quality time together at this 1930s cottage just a stone’s throw from the beach. !

I loved watching this little boy venture out for a surf lesson with one of the ‘big kids’. The instructor had a very kind and patient presence that I really wanted to remember.

There are a lot of surfers in Encinitas, but this mystery man pausing to watch the sunset is my favorite. While I watched from the surrounding cliffs, he had a front row seat and unknowingly became part of the show.

I find it entertaining to watch my kids eat avocados at snack time, scooping giant spoonfuls right out of the skin. Seeing them on the kitchen table year round is a happy reminder of how fortunate we are to live in warm, sunny, Southern California.

Ooohhh, I love drama in the garden. I found this beautiful fuchsia plant in Balboa Park’s Alcazar Garden, next to the Museum of the Living Artist.

When I moved to Encinitas in 2002 I was really captivated by the beautiful vegetation and the relaxed spirit among the residents. There’s something about the birds of paradise with their colorful “feathers” and unique beauty that echoes everything I love about this town.
