Superintendent Board of Education Board Highlights Southern California Regional Occupational Center The SoCal ROC Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting on August 29, 2013. At the meeting, the Board heard the following: STAFF REPORTS Superintendent Hoffman presented a detailed Power Point presentation of the SoCal ROC Annual Report for 2012/13. The report is a summary of how well SoCal ROC performed in terms of the adopted Board Goals and Targets for Success. Superintendent Hoffman also reviewed the priorities for 2013- 2014. CONSENT CALENDAR The Board approved the following new course outlines: Early Childhood Education: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment and Human Body Systems. The Board approved the following on-the-job training site affiliation agreements: Albert Chen, M.D.; Gladys Palomero, M.D., Inc.; The Derm Institute; Vivian Maung, DDS; Peninsula Dental Arts; and Conroy Flowers. GENERAL Future Topic Board Members engaged in discussion as to next steps to take to ensure that SoCal ROC continues to receive state funding once the current two-year funding stream comes to an end in 2015. Board Members believe that SoCal ROC needs to continue so that Career Technical Education programs are available to high school students and adults throughout the South Bay. Board Members were in agreement that planning and efforts need to begin now to ensure that the Legislature and the Governor are aware of the need to include a state funding stream for SoCal ROC after 2015. Ideas were exchanged including: continuing to have legislatures tour the Center and give a special invitation to Governor Brown to visit. SoCal ROC’s three-year funding plan was mentioned and the importance of staying the course with the plan. Another area mentioned was the continued involvement and support of new legislation for SoCal ROC and pending legislation such as Senate Bill 660. Dr. Hoffman stated that as part of the visitation schedule, members from the Legislative Analyst’s Office would be visiting SoCal ROC on September 4th. SUPERINTENDENT’S REMARKS Dr. Hoffman commented on an extremely busy and productive summer here at SoCal ROC. From the interviewing and hiring of new instructors, to the on-going efforts to improve and upgrade facilities, there was never any down time. When classes begin on September 3rd, students will be welcomed with some improvements to the Automotive Technician lab, technology upgrades in four labs, enthusiastic instructors and support staff, and classes that address their Career Pathways and meet industry standards.
