Through the newly established Jerome and Winifred Zeits Memorial Scholarship, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Zeits are being fondly re-membered and appreciated for their dedication to Catholic education at St. Mary School.

Jerome Zeits graduated in 1933 from the old wooden St. Mary School structure and returned to help build the “new” brick building in 1938. He married Winifred Peplinski in 1940 and together they raised six children, sending them to St. Mary School. Among her many volunteer contributions, Winnie served on the school board and chaired the Parish Festival & Chicken Dinner. In her later years, Winnie lived with her children in South Carolina, yet she would always send in a gift to the Endowment Foundation.

A family of deep faith and dedication to God, their legacy to the school and community will live on through this endowed scholarship.

Currently 23% of our St. Mary School students receive tuition assistance. Scholarships may be established through the St. Mary School Endowment Foundation. Establish a scholarship for your family or someone you love!

ST. MARY SCHOOL!

We have been very pleased with St. Mary School. It truly is a large, wonderful family where everyone knows everyone else and treats each other with caring and respect. No

one gets lost in the shuffle. St. Mary not only educates its students, but also imparts the right life values.

We joined St. Mary School when our son was a junior in high school. The staff, students, and families accepted our son and us with open arms and treated all of us as if we have always been a part of them. What a wonderful, caring place it is. I wish we had discovered St. Mary School long before we did. ~Shea and Michele Bonhag

Jozell Rexroat—new Development Director

I am so excited about the opportunity to serve St. Mary School. I hope to be able to foster greater enthusiasm for our wonderful school here on the peninsula. Another goal is to help to showcase our students and their success as individuals both academically and spiritually.

The type of people our students become is what impresses me the most about St. Mary School. With four children who have graduated from St. Mary and one currently attending, I have seen first hand how this school can help shape our children’s lives. I am extremely grateful for St. Mary School! I look forward to serving all of you and ask for your prayers as I step into this position.

Meet Dorothy (Weiss ’31) Brown—St. Mary’s most tenured alum! Dorothy (Weiss) Brown, Class of 1931, believes in the mission of St. Mary School!

The oldest of nine children from a Lutheran farm family, Dorothy walked to the old wooden school building from East Leland daily. She fondly remembers Principal Sr. Bernarda and teachers Sr. Angelica, Sr. Agnes Therese and Sr. Hildegard as wonderful, brilliant women. The class valedictorian, she enjoyed

serving as the editor of the school newspaper, the “St. Mary’s Alert,” and learning to play the piano. Her classmates were Helen (Gauthier) Alpers, Frances Ance, William Gauthier, Dorothy (Hahnenberg) Grant, and Ralph Plamondon.

After graduation, Dorothy attended County Normal in Northport for a year. She then taught for three years at a rural school located between Suttons Bay and Lake Leelanau and for one year in Gills Pier where her mother previously taught. Lastly, she taught three years at Pleasant Valley School in Elmwood Township.

In 1934, she attended summer school at Northern in Marquette. Needing a paper typed for class, she had heard that Ralph Brown, a fellow student, would type papers to earn money. Placing her typewriter on the running board of his Chevy, he typed her paper under the glow of the streetlights. Love blossomed and Mr. Brown became her husband at the Leland Lutheran Church in August 1939. Dorothy’s friends, Rita (Hahnenberg ‘28) Egeler and Frederick Hahnenberg ’26 played the piano and violin for their wedding reception. As husband and wife, Dorothy and Ralph raised four children and had careers in education.

Now 95 years old, Dorothy lives in her own home in the Livonia area where she and Ralph raised their four children. She loves to receive and read the Eagle’s Wings newsletter, especially since it holds her favorite Bible passage, Isaiah 40:31, “They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings.”

“Happy are those who have died in the Lord; let them rest

from their labors for their good deeds go

with them.” ~Revelations 14:13

National Catholic Educational Association Distinguished Graduate Award

The application is available in the AWARDS section of the NCEA website—www.ncea.org. Applications are also available through the St. Mary School Development Office. If you would like to nominate an alum for this new recognition, please submit your application to St. Mary School by March 31, 2009. We look forward to presenting this award to a deserving graduate.

I know that as a Christian dad, I am called to r a i s e u p Children of Christ to ultimately become new Soldiers for Christ. My wife, Paula, and I do not believe we can accomplish 100% of this nurturing and educating on our own. We knew that finding a place to raise our family and a school to send our children was more important than a desirable income, or any number of worldly desires. Well, Leelanau Coun-ty and its’ only Christian School (which happens to be an awesome

school for many reasons), quickly became our answer and our blessing. St. Mary School in Lake Leelanau has and continues to provide the Christ-centered, academically sound, and affordable environment that we could only have dreamed of in many other communities in Michigan. ~Tom Alflen

ST. MARY SCHOOL!

“For our senior mission trip we went to West Virginia and had a chance to help those who are less fortunate. We did everything from putting up insulation to building an entire shed in order to help the families who could not afford to buy a house. In addition to our mission work, we went whitewater rafting (pictured right), zip-lining, rock climbing, and repelling. We had such a great time, we even considered having a class reunion there. Our senior mission trip was an amazing experience and one of the highlights of my senior year.”

“For God and Country”

As part of our school project, “For God and Country”, St. Mary‘s sophomores journeyed to Washington D. C. They participated in the national March for Life, toured the museums and monu men t s , a nd h a d t h e opportunity to worship together at St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill. As a follow up to their studies and expe-riences, the sophomores wrote speeches and many chose to enter the Grand Traverse Area Student Right to Life Oratory Contest. This year, Margaret Barley, earned third place and had her speech published in the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

Living Stations of the Cross Students celebrated Lent by staging a “Living” Stations of the Cross in the gymnasium. Each grade was responsible for re-enacting a different Station. Students dressed in costume and Casey Truelove, Director of Religious Education, played the role of Jesus (pictured carrying the cross). Members of the community were invited to re-live the crucifixion of Christ by witnessing this moving experience.

St. Mary Students “Have Heart”

Did you know that 16% of all children and teens in the U.S. are overweight?

Did you know that cardiovascular disease ranks as the second leading cause of death in children under age 15?

Hearts were “hopping” in our new school gym on Valentine’s Day as students in grades 1-6 jumped with joy in the “Jump Rope for Heart” event, sponsored by the American Heart Association. Students made posters, and secured pledges to contribute to the American Heart Association’s research program. The students raised $2563—$1000 more than last year!!

Students Help Keep Children

Warm With 208 yards of fabric, eleven sewing machines, three cutting stations, three pinning stations, and a few irons, the 8th-12th grade students created 83 baby quilts (a new record) for babies

in need! Jozell Rexroat initiated this valuable service project 14 years ago. Quilts are delivered annually to the Leelanau Baby Pantry and the Goodwill Inn. Remaining quilts are delivered to countries throughout the world. Pictured—Parent volunteer Mrs. Peggy Zemanek looks on as senior Ryan Korson and Principal Mark Gaubatz sew blankets on sewing machines.

Food for the Poor Two million children die worldwide every year due to preventable water borne diseases. In Latin America, 15% of the population does not have access to safe water. This year, Mrs. Jane Robinson’s fourth grade class raised $210 at their annual “Food for the Poor” bake sale! The students had hoped to raise enough money to buy a water pump for a Latin American country in need of clean drinking water. They not only achieved their goal,

but exceeded it by enough to feed six hungry families for a whole month! Way to go Class of 2016!

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink,…”

Students Give to a Local Family Students in K-12 practiced one of the three traditional Lenten disciplines (fasting, prayer, and almsgiving) by donating a total of over $600 of their own money to benefit the electricity, food, and heating needs of a local family. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus who matched the students’ gift with a donation of $500.

to Attend St. Mary School. With a K-12 enrollment of 221 (grades K-12), 51 students were awarded $62,996 in scholarships for the 2007-08 school year—thanks to the generosity of individuals and foundations! Most of these young people would not be able to attend St. Mary’s without scholarships assistance. What a great difference donors make! God Bless all our scholarship donors!

Lori Schaub, Business Manager and Jean LaCross, Development Director, expressed appreciation to Ms. Mary Anderson-Goddard, Executive Director, and Sr. Trinita Balbach, Assistant Director, of the George and Mary Kremer Foundation for their scholarship assistance to the students of St. Mary School. All attended the 2008 National Catholic Educational Association Annual Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

My wife, Diane, and I have been supporters of the Guardian Angel Society at St. Mary’s for several years. Having been a seasonal resident for more than 60 years, I

have known many graduates of St. Mary’s and have always been impressed with them. Both Diane and I appreciate the very positive influence St. Mary’s continues to have in Leelanau County.

After having turned down Jean LaCross’ invitation to tour the school more than once, we accepted her offer this May. We soon wondered why we had waited so long. We visited classrooms from the 3rd grade to the 12th and immediately became aware that something unusual was present. It was partly the enthusiasm of the students but really it was more than that. The feeling we had was that this school lives the gospel of Jesus Christ; it doesn’t just hear it on Sundays. And the wall in the gym proclaims it loud and clear as if there were any doubt.

We would encourage anyone remotely interested in supporting this wonderful school to contact the Development Office and ask for a tour. We walked away knowing we were supporting something special… and it felt terrific. ~Tom and Diane Leugers

ASK US ABOUT…

ST. MARY SCHOOL!

We commend the members of St. Mary Parish, the staff, and other supporters for their sacrifices and the commitment they have shown in operating and maintaining a vital preschool through 12th grade Catholic school for the students of Leelanau County….From my personal experience, I believe the influence of a Catholic middle school and high school environment, the daily sharing together of Christian ideals by students and staff, is most important to the values one holds later in life into adulthood.

~George Zink East Leland/Anderson, Indiana resident

The Guardian Angel Society is about financial aid scholarships so that all students can experience the excellent Catholic education St. Mary School offers….I applied and received a scholarship that covered room, board, and tuition to a Catholic women’s college. Today, I am proud to be a Guardian Angel donor and help the St. Mary students. I can’t say enough about how one’s generosity sends a ripple effect out into society through those who have benefited by it.

~Kitty Zink East Leland/Anderson, Indiana resident

St. Mary School deserves congratulations for its long history of superlative work in educating children. The Christ-centered, Catholic education St. Mary students receive is strong in academics as well as faith development. There is no greater gift we can give these outstanding children of God at this time in their lives. The efforts of your excellent administration and staff members are to be commended. May God bless you as you continue to develop in your students a deep faith and love of Christ in a secure, supportive environment that produces high academic achievement. ~Most Reverend Patrick R. ASK ME ABOUT…

ST. MARY SCHOOL!

With your Help... ...St. Mary School will be “A Place Fit for Kids”! We are enormously grateful to God and our community for the 2004 addition to our school of a gymnasium, kitchen and cafeteria. Four years later, we still celebrate these gifts with daily gratitude! We also realize there are more needs to fulfill and goals to accomplish and are working to make significant improvements.

With improvements to our food service program we will be able to serve more healthy, fresh and whole foods such as homemade soups, a salad bar with many fresh vegetables, fresh fruits especially those grown as available in Leelanau County, yogurts and dairy products, sandwiches with whole grain breads, etc. This involves securing funding to purchase serving equipment, a refrigerated cooler, salad bar, serving counters and hot service units (for soups and sub sandwiches). A major need is a walk-in cooler, which would be constructed on the east side of our school.

Thanks to grant funding received from the Oleson Foundation of Traverse City, the Herbert & Elsa Ponting Foundation of Ann Arbor and the Wayne and Joan Webber Foundation of Clinton Township, the food service improvements will be made this summer and ready for students when school starts in the fall. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the St. Mary “Thyme and Tradition” cookbooks is also being allocated to this project.

A second component of this endeavor would be the construction of a fitness center. When we built our 2004 addition, we envisioned also providing a fitness center in our plans, however at that time, it was cost prohibitive. As good stewards, we built what we could afford at that time.

An equipped fitness center would also add greater opportunities for our students to establish healthy lifestyles, expand our physical education program, provide a place and equipment for student athletes. As well, it would offer opportunities for staff and community members to enhance their physical fitness.

Donations are being received, however, this project will not begin until funding is completely secured. If you are interested, we would most certainly appreciate gifts to bring this project to fruition!

Above: Students eagerly try out new, healthy foods when presented to them! With an improved lunch menu, we hope to offer many healthy foods to our students, whet their appetites with good nutrition and grow their taste buds for healthy foods.

The long term sustainability of Catholic schools must be assured. Indeed, everything

possible must be done, in cooperation with the wider community, to ensure that they are accessible to people of all s o c i a l a n d economic strata. No child should be denied his or her right to an education in faith, which in turn nurtures the soul of a nation. ~Pope Benedict

St. Mary Students Score Well on ACT by Mark Gaubatz, Principal

Taken during the students’ junior year of high school, the ACT (formerly American College Testing) assessment measures the students’ general educational development and their capability to complete college-level work with the multiple-choice tests covering four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The optional Writing test measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. Specifically, ACT states that its scores provide an indicator of “college readiness,” and that scores in each of the subtests correspond to skills in entry-level college courses in English, math, social sciences, and biology.

Our goal at St. Mary is to continue to strengthen our curriculum by developing stronger connections between all of our grade levels. Providing greater opportunities for staff to plan together, providing targeted staff development programs and by better aligning our curriculum with the state standards and benchmarks is doing this.

I’m proud of our staff and student accomplishments—and the strong support that we all receive from our families has a positive impact on how our students learn.

With your Help... ...the curriculum will be re-aligned, im-proved, and updated!

This past school year Principal Mark Gaubatz and our teachers engaged in a comprehensive study of the preschool—12th grade curriculum, which is being rev i s ed and re - a l i g ned according to Diocesan and State of Michigan standards and benchmarks. We are not only working diligently to improve and update the curriculum, but striving to go above and beyond national standards to achieve exemplary standards for the students.

Teachers have prepared classroom educational plans and have outlined priority needs at each grade level—preschool through high school.

Composite English Math Reading Science Writing

SMS Class of 2009 23.5 23.6 21.9 25.1 23.1 8.0

State Average 19.6 18.7 19.5 19.8 19.9 Not avail.

State Average 18.9 17.8 18.9 19.1 19.5 6.5

Highlights of the needs… Textbooks for elementary religion, high school world history and biology.

As texts become outdated, we strive to replace them with new series. Technology software, digital projectors and a color printer. The use of

technology is integrated into classroom lessons and learning at all grade levels. As well, we must prepare our high school students for higher education and/or the world of work.

Professional Development Funds for teachers to enhance their skills at analyzing students’ standardized test results and implementing the many curriculum upgrades.

Instructional Classroom supplies to actively engage the students in learning activities and provide more hands-on opportunities.

Elementary Science Kits, such as: water, air & weather, insects, force & motion, plant & animal life, solids & liquids, matter & energy, popula-tion & ecosystems, magnetism & electricity, etc. These quality science materials would provide practical experiences for the students to “learn by doing” and thus understand and retain concepts more fully.

Principal Mark Gaubatz estimates the cost for implementing these curriculum improvements at approximately $80,000. The annual school budget will provide a portion of the costs: expenses for curriculum related field trips are offset by student fundraisers and parent contributions. This leaves a funding need of approximately $20,000.

Would it be possible for you to please give a gift to help the students?

School Enrollment Continues to Climb! Despite a downturn in overall enrollment in the State of Michigan and in Leelanau County, our early elementary enrollment continues to grow! With 18 students, the class of 2021 is the largest Kindergarten class at St. Mary’s in ten years. Other grades have also grown: 1st grade has gained four new students this year for a total of 16. 2nd grade has three new students this year, bringing the total to 18.

Mrs. Colette Petras is pictured with the 18 students in her 2008-09 Kindergarten class—the largest Kindergarten class in 10 years!!

Twenty years ago, a group of talented, creative alumni and supporters joined together and performed skits, songs, dances, and more for appreciative audiences. “Performance Plus” helped our school which, at that time, had an enrollment of 131, to reduce a $70,000 deficit during very tough economic times. Twenty years later, our school is blessed with an enrollment of over 240 students and operates in the “black” thanks to generous donations from c a r i n g i nd i v i du a l s , p a r t ne r i n g foundations, and supportive businesses. We give thanks to God and to each of you for helping to continue the mission of Catholic, Christian education begun on the Leelanau peninsula in 1987!

Barbershoppers Doug Schaub ‘82, Mike Frodl ‘70, Julius Bunek ‘72, and Joe Flees ‘69 classmate, singing in the 1988 “Performance Plus” show. Talented gentlemen—thank you!
