Fr. Joe’s Morning Ride: Your Rule of Life

I have a confession to make. I kind of let things go a little. No...that's not true. I let things go a lot! The other day I walked out into the garage to check on my motorcycle. Idle all winter, spring and most of the summer, it was looking pretty rough. A thick cover of garage dust, expired license plates, dead battery, chrome in need of lots of polish and oil in need of changing. I really let things slip over the last several months. I have always loved my bikes, all of them and especially this one. But for reasons still unknown and not understood, I let things unravel...I became separat-ed...detached...unaware and distracted. As a result this beautiful piece of British engineering and craftsmanship, capable of all manner of outstanding feats of amazement...has done basically noth-ing for the last 9 months. Sitting, alone, neglected, disrespected, and unwanted. Of course, I fall back on the classic of excuses, But I have been busy! Busy with all kinds of things and as a result—my beloved bike—always there, always willing, just kept slipping down the priority food chain until it resided somewhere south of plankton. This just doesn't happen with motorcycles, Sisters and Brothers, and I was thinking our Spirit Jour-ney often suffers the same neglectful fate. We are busy with a million other priorities: career, fami-ly, finances, our health. Children and Elders both challenge us. There is often too much month and not enough pay to go around. Relationships are in crisis. We retreat to familiar and safe places like our computers and phones that often switch us into mental and emotional neutral. We engage in that place where drama replaces depth, and curiosity replaces caring. This is not a new state of spiritual being. Many have experienced it up close and personally, and have fought through it. The early mystics of Christianity, The Desert Fathers, reported a type of spiritual coldness that enveloped them which they called acedia. Left unchecked it is like a spiritual carcinogenicity that dismantles our ability to "go deeper.” We replace our deeply contemplative spir-ituality with a superficial busyness that simply crowds out and chokes out the intentionality of our Spirit Journeys. St Francis of Assisi, Francis' beloved St. Clare, Mother Theresa, Pope John Paul XXIII have all reported the spiritual coldness of acedia. So, Father Joe, how to we keep our spirituality alive when so much and so many compete for our time each day. Well as with Christianity in general, the answer is simple but not easy. Have a Plan, in this case the "plan" is called your Rule of Life. Your Rule of Life explains how you make room and prioritize your Spirit Journey each and every day. Following our Rule of Life successfully through your day, making every task a prayer and every person met and engaged an opportunity to encounter the living Jesus. Simply put: Pay Attention! We get the blessed opportunity to walk through and be surrounded by the Grace of The Creator each and every day. Feel it wrap you....breathe It in and out. Experience It up close and personally. Ride every day, every day take your rag and touch up your chrome, turn the key and hear that magnificent spiritual engine roar to life, ready to take you anywhere you can imagine, respon-sive and ready. Strap up and Saddle up. Your Rule of Life will guide you...Ride Hard! Blessings, Father Joe To learn more about the Franciscan Rule of Life visit www.tssf.org

Grief Recovery Weekend

Are you, or someone you love, grieving the end of a marriage from a death or a divorce? A grief recovery retreat for the widowed, separated and divorced will be held the weekend of October 13 -15 (registration by October 2 is recommended). Contact Jo Anne for more infor-mation: 503-476-4796 or email her at [email protected]. You can also visit www.beginningexperienceoforegon.org. The program will be offered again in March 2018. The retreat consists of presentations by Beginning Experience team members, periods for pri-vate personal reflection and sharing in small groups. The weekend begins on Friday evening and concludes Sunday afternoon. The cost of $195 includes lodging for 2 nights in a double room, meals and resource materials. Special arrangement may be made for payment, and partial scholarships are available. Single rooms are available for an additional $20.

OTHER INFORMATION YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW Beginning Experience, a peer ministry, was created with the help of the founders of Marriage Encounter in the 1970's. The Oregon team, active since 1978, provides three healing week-ends each year. It is a peer ministry of people who have benefited from this program and have received training to offer the opportunity to others.

Convention Support Needed

Diocesan Convention is October 27th and 28th. As a parish in the “hosting” region of our di-ocese, we have been asked to assemble a Convention Support Team. While the ways we will serve haven’t been set just yet, if you’re willing to help out that weekend, talk to Kitty, who’s coordinating the support team. [email protected]. Thank you!
